  • George experiments with over exposing colour film (Kodak Portra 400) to varying degrees to try and give you an idea of what speed you should shoot your film at.

    • @NegativeFeedback
      @NegativeFeedback  Před 8 lety +14

      yeah it's so strange, I guess in normal portraits it's nice for less contrast and smooth tones, but when using a flash you really want that contrast

    • @TimPalman
      @TimPalman Před 8 lety

      yah yah, I think overexposing really reduces the contrast in the lighter tones, hence the reduced saturation. Underexposing seems to saturate those same tones

    • @canturgan
      @canturgan Před 7 lety +2

      The Metz looked like it was overexposing anyway. Was it in auto mode? It's a variable that makes the test a waste of time unless the flash was in full manual power mode. Face on flash is totally unflattering and harsh.

    • @Dan-jg7zl
      @Dan-jg7zl Před 4 lety

      Did it not occur that is was more likely his flash position/settings that caused the photo to look horrible. This guy is a crap photographer. Hasn't a clue about how to use flash properly.

  • @ak33mc
    @ak33mc Před 8 lety +20

    On the test with the flash, there's two components to the exposure: Ambient and flash. What you're seeing is the difference in colour temperature between the bulb and the natural light source, in conjunction with the under/overexposure characteristics of the film.. As a result of changing the iso setting, the camera has compensated by changing the flash power or shutter speed, which has changed the lighting ratio, which has upset the colour balance.

    This video is perfectly timed! I just got my first pack of Portra 400 film :) I'm surprised with the look of the underexposed Portra @800 (1:24), it looks really awesome in my opinion yet from what I've heard most people overexpose Portra. I guess in terms of shadow detail it's not really ideal like you mentioned in the video.

    Another cool video... I usually overexpose color negative...to me the color and images overall look better when I overexpose. But WOW, your photo one stop under looks really good to me. I'm going to have to try that. The little lack of detail, the subdued and grainy cast...all that added a nice bit of drama to your shot at 800...very nice! Anyway, thanks again for sharing George... really cool stuff.

    All I can say is I wish I'd have seen this earlier !! I legit had a shoot I was so excited about in NYC and the conditions were as close to this as possible. Though it's still one of my favorite shoots (It was my first online mag feature!) I couldn't help but thinking i liked how my 1st roll of Portra looked and now I know why. I remember finishing up a roll of 160 and then switching to 400 and forgetting to change the iso. I was told to develop normally and so I did. The pictures didn't have enough contrast for me and now I know why.

I was hoping you or anyone else who sees this comment could clarify some things for me. If I rate my Portra 400 at 200 to overexpose one stop, do I meter using 400 or 200? Also, at what speed should I ask the lab to develop my roll at afterwards? Thanks in advance.

    There results surprise me, since there is no real effect.

However the flash photos still look best at box speed, and I think this is because lifted shadows only work when detail is softer and stays in the midtones.

    Excellent video. Just a minor point, but the first scene on the bed was very high-key, so the camera would tend to under expose this anyway, much like a snowy scene. So over-exposing is going to give you a more natural look. For a true test of whether the pictures look better under or over exposed with that particular film it might have been better to choose a scene with a more even distribution of tones? Good test though. You’ve inspired me to replicate it myself.
