      Yeah you don't need 600-700 HP to do well. Sure if you are doing sprints up to 190 mph maybe, but for most of us with average or mildly modified cars, we can still set good times. It doesn't matter about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times when you're going cross country. Gas mileage at speed and, range between fill ups, and ability to cruise at 120-130 is what you need. Most cars can do that with 200-300 HP and if you have a speed limiter get a tune to get rid of it. Some cars come with 155 mph speed limiter which should be sufficient.

      It's the perfect V8 gasguzzler culture: there aren't even proper carsized diesel fillers in every station countrywide like he narrated ... Those sidevalve-1-cam-underneath square cumbustion chamber V8s (... a "Hemi" still to date seems something worth writing home about) do work best with liquid-gas-cooled pistons 😂 - diesel fuel does not work that way. Thats why there still are some cars with a milage under 10 mpg gasoline we wouldn't even discuss to *start* in Europe (outside a museum, that is), let alone *drive* to the cigarette vending machine or the italian icecream dealer - Germany instead does *commute* with cars like Arne's 6.3 (before customized tuning, of course) and 140 mph / 26 mpg.
      Dennis Hopper impersonated this gasoline culture pretty impressive in "Waterworld".

    • @bored588
      @bored588 Před 3 lety

      we use them mainly for work, pulling, hauling, basically to Americans diesel = work horse, sporty gas car = a race horse. but what makes them good for working makes them good for driving, efficiency, torque, and somewhat more simple. honestly, surprised we dont see them more in american cars, but most american sports cars remain gasoline because thats how its always been, same reason zora was told no about mid engine in corvettes in the 60s. "it how we did it then, its how we do it now" except chevy got smart enough to make it mid engine, in 2020. and some how fucked that up, near 700hp, thats shit compared to lets say, what ford and dodge have been doing lately, should have made it 1000 even, called it the corvette zora, and apologize to zora for being idiots for 40+ years. we will see a sports car with a diesel as some point, just needs a good transmission to match it.

      @@bored588 Best thing in German actual Diesel (before Diesel-gate and EU-emission idiocy, at least) cars was: those aren't even Sportscars, but regular everyday commuter Sedans and Wagons, like BMW's 540/740/745 diesel V8s .... You wouldn't find those in BMW's Sportscars, for those are equipped with gasoline V8s and V12s, while the bigger diesel allday everyday workhorses still are capable of 250 km/h easily and longterm .... opened up (no fixed top-speed in the ECU) the 4.5 litre V8 diesel with a full fuel cell in the trunk would be the engine to win C2C I suppose.

    Somebody from Europe should send the tuned 500+HP BMW M550d over to the USA for Cannonball record once this whole pandemic is over. That VW did impressive time, but just imagine what 4 turbo diesel monster pushing 500HP can do while still maintaining low fuel consumption. Might be faster than the S6 even since S6 was probably pushing 600HP and they didn't exceed 175 at any point. Whereas the diesel would consume less, not be much slower and could actually cruise at the similar speeds. So if the conditions are perfect and the drivers are as good, a diesel car might just take the Cannonball record.

    Advice.....pre-run all possible fueling stations ahead of time with local volunteers. Find fueling locations with the right kind of fuel, and the fastest pumps. Consider having the station operators to modify the pumps so they pump fuel faster. Also have dedicated, clean, and vacant restroom stalls waiting available. Consider pre-paying food and drink they it’s ready to swoop up. This should reduce the time stopped.

    I had a '01 Jetta TDI mildly modded, it had an upsolute chip/tune, fat injectors, VR6 clutch/short throw shifter, oil bypass, refirbed/bigger turbo off ebay with brembos on all 4.
    I doubt that car made over 200hp but it was a riot to drive, all the torque was in the low revs and it would pull for a lil guy and surprise people. I had the stock rims on snowtires and it was a tank in the winter. If I kept my foot out of it I could knock down 40mpg at a time when diesel was significantly less than gas. It was the perfect rig for a broke college student working and driving 120 miles daily.
    The memory I will take in perpetauity of my little Jetta, will be that of the confused look on V6 Mustang, 3 series and Cadillac owners faces as I gapped them on US131 praying to god my Escort X50 didn't light up on Ka band. Good times.
