    As a PHX native, i'd like to add a few things:
    1. 120 is only on the worst of the worst days. Like, once every 2-3 years. Monsoon rains actually lower the temperatures quite a bit. With that said, just because it's a dry heat does not mean it is not oppressive. Getting into a car that has been sitting outside in the summer can be a memorable experience for an outsider. Yet somehow it's all worth it when you can crack a beer on your porch in January :)
    2. According to official crime statistics, Phoenix is right around the national average, and I'd tend to agree with that. My friend from Cali says he feels way safer here than LA. Yes there are some bad neighborhoods like every city. But NOTHING like Baltimore, Cleveland, Memphis, or inner-city Chicago (no disrespect). Not even close!
    3. People are reasonably friendly, but pretty business-like about their interactions. Friendlier than the east coast, but that's not saying much haha. I kinda like it though. They're not overbearing, and by that I mean you don't have to share your life story with everyone you meet. Remember: Phoenix is a BIG city. Many people are surprised at how big it is.
    4. Cost of living, while more than it used to be, is quite reasonable, especially compared to cities like Seattle, Denver, or anywhere in California. But utilities in the summer are a doozy. Watch out.
    5. If you want a younger, more liberal, artsy vibe, I recommend Tempe. College town, plenty to do, lots of bars. Somewhat more expensive though. I personally think ASU is one of the most underrated schools in the country. Won some awards recently.
    Hope this helps. I'd be happy to answer any other questions.

      Spot on. One other thing about the weather and utilities is that, in parts of the spring and fall, folks can opt for evaporative cooling, if they wish to lower electricity bills, somewhat (and are willing to go through the trouble of keeping a swamp cooler properly maintained) , though real air conditioning is necessary in late spring and most of the monsoonal periods. Oh, and it can get kinda humid, some times, during monsoon, but nothing like the gulf coast or deep south.

      @gmichaelz Před 7 lety

      Maitland Newton does a reasonable solar setup cut into the electric bill at all?

      The politics with the solar utility mean that you won't save as much as you used to with a solar setup. As far as motorcycles go I have friends who do it but it's brutal in summer

    I'm sitting on my deck in Glen Burnie Maryland enjoying a cigar break and watching CZcams videos. I was born and raised in Phoenix and enjoyed your video. I left Arizona for 40 years ago for college in Ohio. I moved to Maryland for an engineering job. the big change for me was living in a place that had four seasons. I do not miss the heat of Phoenix but I do like to visit in the winter and spring. the desert feels like an old friend and I miss the smells of Mesquite and creosote bush. the one thing that always surprises me when I visit Phoenix is how much bigger the city area is becoming. there used to be a lot of space between the different cities like Tempe and Mesa, and Chandler was a long drive through the desert to get there. I agree about the nice cigar lounges and I do find hello cigar smokers to be very friendly there. it's a bit ironic that I was 18 years old when I first experienced snow. now I'm contemplating getting a snow blower cuz I hate shoveling the white s***, I know that Michigan gets a lot more snow than Maryland so you know what I'm talking about. you can keep the Heat and the traffic and I will enjoy my four seasons.

    I've lived in AZ for 35 years. Based on the view from your car I'm guessing you live on the west side - Avondale perhaps? I10 sucks for traffic. I'm in Chandler and avoid the traffic by going to work at 5am and leave at 2pm. You nailed it on the crappy drivers - they're all from somewhere else. Twice as bad during snowbird season. Yeah nice gun laws. That's my other big hobby. Personally I love the heat. Tucson is a great town, I lived there 5 years. People are friendlier and a touch more cowboy. More work and better pay here in the valley though. Lots of good micro breweries here too. Not as good as SD or Portland, but not bad. Great places to escape the heat in the mountains - camping, fishing, hiking etc. Just watch the cigar so you don't burn it down. Sounds like you're settling in - welcome to AZ! I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I also think the roads are so smooth and new and traffic moves fast. People drive fast enough but not crazy like the east coast. This is a nice middle ground.

    One thing that really struck me about phx was all the angry people. That heat really cooks some people's brains.
    It's so hot in the summer, people wash their cars INSIDE their garage to keep the water from drying on the car and spotting.
    What drove me nuts was all the leaf blowers and the people mowing their lawns a 5am to avoid the heat.
    AND don't even get me started on the barking dogs. Phx is the doggiest city i've ever seen. A big loud barking
    dog in every back yard. If you like your peace and quiet, move to a gated community that actually enforces
    rules about barking dogs. Google "barking dogs poisioned phoenix" Its a real eye-opener.
    If you like speeding up to red lights and putting on your brakes fast you'll like it in phx. They hate having slower
    cars getting in front of them and slowing them down.
    What do you do when the electricty goes out or you a/c motor blows out because of a voltage spike from a monsoon
    thunderstorm and it's 100 degrees INSIDE the house? Better have a backup plan!

As a young kid 6 of us traveled in a vw bug to visit relatives here. We used a device like that in the sixties just a tray to hold the ice and the fan blew cooled air enough so we didn't roast as much. Poor mans a/c if you will.

    This is a really good description of what it is like to live in Phoenix. Very real. I lived in Phoenix for several years in the early 80's when living there was almost perfect. I travel there periodically now to visit friends. It was a large enough city at that time but not the megalopolis it is today. Today It is crowded and traffic is horrendous. The summer heat is oppressive but over time you will get used to it. Compared to other western large cities housing is a better value in Phoenix though. And yes, I agree, Tucson, a city I have also lived in, is an awesome option if you want less of a rat race environment. I now live in Denver where housing costs have become outrageous, but the quality of life here is amazing. The most noticeable difference between AZ and CO for me was how much friendlier people in CO are. Anyone can move to Denver and fit right in. Apart from the conservative politics in AZ (Tucson is less republican), geographically it really is a beautiful state.. I love all the southwest states and we are all lucky to live in such a diverse country... there are 50 awesome choices...

    The thing about Phoenix is that everyone is from somewhere else so yeah that is the reason why you dont have that old neighborhood feeling where you know everyone. Also there was what I like to call the Big Shuffle. During the recession alot of people lost their homes followed by a period where houses were ridiculously cheap. This caused people to move outside of their normal enviroment haha. Then we had a tsunami of Californians who could sell their old houses and could buy two here and still kept some walking around money. So even for us who have lived here most of our lives we dont know who lives three houses down the street anymore. I hate summers, its hot, plain and simple. Three months of the year its unbearable outside but the rest of the year is perfect weather or lack there of. clear blue skies every day.

    • @HotLikeFire92
      @HotLikeFire92 Před 8 lety +2

      It's crazy because the recession really messed things up. About 200,000 people fled AZ so i think that's a big part of why we don't see lots of natives here anymore. AZ got hit hard.

      Coming from an Arizonan, people are friendly just not to new comers. We don’t like people moving here, the state is being over stressed. Soon we won’t have water. The only way to become “one of us” is to not change our ways. We are a conservative old school state, but that is quickly being changed.

  • @az5654
    @az5654 Před 7 lety +2

    All great points! I especially like your mention of how friendly people are (or are not). I have lived in the Phoenix-metro area since 1975. People were not always as reserved as they are now. I think part of the problem is because so many of us are from somewhere else. There are very few Arizona natives. So, as you mentioned when you brought up the wacky drivers and the habits they bring from somewhere else, the same applies to their culture and their levels of sociability. To further emphasize the point; I lived in a really nice neighborhood for two years. One of my immediate neighbors never welcomed me and my family to the neighborhood. Rarely did I ever see them. While the neighbor on my other side would see me outside working on the yard or on my car in the garage and take a moment just to walk over and chit chat. As you said, some people are just content to stay to themselves. Surprisingly though, I had to ask my “reserved” neighbor for a favor and he was more than helpful! Go figure. This phenomenon becomes immediately apparent when you travel anywhere else. You can even stop someone on the street or subway in New York City for directions and get a more welcoming response than out here!
    Living in Gilbert for most of my adult life, with my job in Phoenix (near the airport), it would take me the better part of an hour to get there. I had to be there at 7:00 AM. So that meant getting up at 5:00 AM to get ready and begin my commute. It was always to be expected that there were going to be accidents on the way to work and back home again. As a result, it was always a crap shoot how long your commutes would take. The bottom line? The drivers out here suck! Rain out here paralyzes people behind the wheel! They’re just not used to driving in such “adverse” conditions being as there are over 300 days of sunshine here per year.

    Great video! and yeah I have lived in the Valley for 24 years now and the HOT season is something to get used to. And yeah I live in Tempe, and traffic at peak hours is rough. As far as friendliness, I have had a different experience. But I grew up in a big city, Houston, Texas, so some people are hard to approach.
    We are coming into the HOT season, which makes cigar and pipe smoking outside a real challenge. But hey, you don't have to shovel sunshine, ha. Cheers!

    Great video. Everything you say is spot on. We moved to Phoenix from Ohio and lived there for 10 years. It was awful. Traffic, nasty people, crime and the heat drove us back to Ohio. You're correct, people here in the Midwest are far more friendly. We know everyone here in our neighborhood since we moved back to Ohio. In Phoenix we lived in the same house for 10 years and didn't know any of our neighbors.

When I lived in Las Vegas which has similar weather to Phoenix AZ. 110 F and 5% humidity was awesome! Its hot but not dripping wet. Winter 60f was cold in Vegas. 60f in PA is hot in the winter. It snowed on time in Vegas 3 inches and the city nearly shutdown. Where as in PA its normal everyday life. I love the southwest want to move back so bad! Moved back to PA during the Great Recession.

Winters suck... things die or go dormant in the winter time for a reason... depressions is higher in areas with cold winters for a reason... because.. it sucks. I lived in Las Vegas and loved the mild winters. I had to move back East to Washington, DC and I miss the warmth and the desert atmosphere. I have really bad allergies and many allergist have suggested a desert atmosphere for me. I am going to be moving to Phoenix next year and I can't wait. I have visited a few times and I loved it.

As far as surviving that. Well you just stay indoors when the huge dust cloud hits and wait till it passes. If it's small it's still a good idea to wait. It carries lots of bacteria. If your driving just turn your brights on and drive with caution.

I wouldn't mind trying a city with less sprawl and with a little more population density like those in the east coast. Again I just say that vaguely as I'm not sure how much I would like that but I'm up for the challenge.

    My family tree is from Phoenix actually and I was born there also, but a great job offer believe it or not was in Southfield, and I was only 3 when we moved there. We lived in Livonia for 10 years, and I basically grew up there, and then at 13, we moved back to Phoenix and now I'm 20 and we lived here ever since. I have my pros and cons, I talk somewhat with that Midwest accent, but that's only because my friends I made at school all talked like that, the winters never bothered me at all, (I actually don't remember owning more than 2 pairs of pants, and those were sweatpants. My dad was the same exact way, he always wore shorts throughout the winters, and he enjoyed it. Maybe it's because throughout generations the heat bothered us so much, we just needed to get all the cold we can get, LOL.) The summers were miserable for my dad though, he couldn't stand it at all and always waited for those afternoon thunderstorms to roll in so he can go out in the backyard and cool off, LOL, I did the same exact thing, the lightning shows were awesome, we always went out on the porch and watched them. One of the things I literally couldn't stand about the warm season was pollen. I had sore throats ALL the time, my dad too. It was MISERABLE and sometimes I couldn't even wait until winter. Anyways, my dad was always going on about how corrupt the legal system, and economic system was back there. He also couldn't stop getting mad at the span wire traffic lights, he always thought it was ugly and he always called the state poor. Not sure why they have span wires, though. Out of all the time we lived there, we never went to Detroit, LOL. Seriously we never step foot in the city.
    But anyways, honestly? It's hard to say. I love the West Coast so much and have been to practically every state in the West, and I love the culture here, I really do. But east of the Great Divide, we've only been to the suburbs of Detroit, nowhere else. The thing I can say that I REALLY miss about the eastern part of the country is the greenery. It's all natural. No one comes and literally has to water lawns, the thunderstorms do. Seriously, I haven't been to a single place in the West that has natural greenery is the summertime, it's always yellow.

      Oh, and yes, it's easy to become dehydrated, here in the west, without having many appreciable warning signs. Though once you're apprised of them--even if it's through an alarming situation like you're wife's--it's easier to appreciate those little cues and stop for a few bottles of water, when you're out running errands.

      30K is good out here as long as you don't have children. Keep in mind that certain things are about the same everywhere.........new cars, car insurance. Automobile registration is extremely high here. A new vehicle can easily cost you $1,000 per year - YES one thousand a year for registration. A used car still will cost you a few hundred per year. That's the one expense that shocked me. I'm from the east coast so I don't think the traffic is bad. The one thing is if there is ANY rain, the natives can't drive and there are accidents all over. I'm serious.
      The winters are fantastic but the summers totally suck. I mean really suck. You can't feel the heat when you hear people talk about it....the summers are HOT. Don't think you will go out early in the morning or late at night and still be good outdoors. I thought that same thing. NAH-ah. Too hot and I like the heat. Other than the heat and car registration it's nice out here and I find the people to be very friendly everywhere I go. Good luck.

    Thanks for the video. I am really trying to debate on whether to move here or not. It is pretty warm. I have family out here, plus my younger sister.. But debating on here or Colorado. I don't like being cold...ever, but I know I can deal with it. Thing is, I don't know that I want to deal with it. I keep thinking about the Arizona sunset, granted the heat is terrible, but in the end....the Arizona sunset is amazing. I took a spontaneous trip down there one year, best experience, but I felt good with Arizona. I have lived in Arizona, didn't like the cold, but people are friendly, education is good here, spendy...it does have anything and everything. So... pros and cons are hard.

    Typically the East Valley(Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa) is generally better in all 3 of those categories you talked about. The Weather in the East Valley is generally cooler than Phoenix because of heat islands(there's more to this but idk really how to explain it)- there is a farther distance form Phoenix. The traffic here is slightly better, just leave earlier than normal. And nowhere in Chandler and Gilbert do you see actual ghettos(maybe closer to downtown) but still not as bad as Phoenix. Also, the environment is definitely better in the East Valley. People are a lot nicer here!

    The Valley is a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there. Moved there 3 times since 1973, and couldn't stay more than 7 years before leaving. Traffic is horrible, most of your neighbors are from other states and there's no rooted culture. The locals have pretty much fled the area for places to the north (Prescott, Payson, Show Low, etc), and for the most part the bulk of the population migrated from other states--mostly the Rust Belt. While it's a "dry" heat, 100+ degrees is hot, regardless. If you leave your vehicle in the sun for any length of time, your steering wheel will burn your hands. Dashboards dry-rot within a few years, and exterior finishes on vehicles seems to fade faster. Back in the '70s the Valley was a great place to move to--low, sparse population collections, friendly people in general, and lots of open highway to drive. Plus real estate was comparatively cheap. Now it's an extension of West L.A. in many sections of the cities in and around Phoenix, crime rates are high and the cost of living (housing, utilities, etc) is higher than many other areas of the country.

    Moved to Phoenix from New Jersey almost four years ago. Compared to there, people are much friendlier in Phoenix. If you're comparing smaller cities in Michigan or rural Michigan to Phoenix, of course people will seem less friendly in Phoenix. Get out of the city, head to Tucson or Flagstaff, and you will notice people are much friendlier.

    I've lived in Washington State, New York, Georgia, Texas, and Arizona. So I've basically experienced every type of weather the US has to offer. The desert is hands down the best climate to live in once you get used to it. Your body will acclimatize to the heat eventually and it won't be that big of a deal to be outside in the summer. The list of problems associated with humidity and cold weather is legion - dry heat is the best.
    Bro - you literally moved to the worst part of the valley in terms of traffic. Phoenix is one of only a few cities where the roads are setup on a grid system. For the size of Phoenix it is actually one of the best in the nation in terms of traffic. You just need to find a different way to work - there will be hundreds.
    Let's organize a Phoenix HERF!

    • @AM2PMReviews
      @AM2PMReviews  Před 8 lety

      Yeah the road system is great I got used to directions very fast. Yeah the 10 should clear up once the other highway is built by south mountain. Yeah we should organize something!

    • @moseleyfamilyadventures4298

      I'm a phoenix native and the longer I lived there, the more sensitive I got to the heat. Heat is not something you can acclimate to. Cold weather is something you can acclimate too. That's what I have learned. I lived in Arizona (of course), Colorado, Texas, Virginia, Mississippi and now Michigan. Also, the heat in Arizona is hotter and lasting longer every year than it did decades ago.

    • @jasphoenix007
      @jasphoenix007 Před 7 lety

      Chris Moseley - lol, which is why there are way more humans living in frozen tundra's of North Dakota and Minnesota than in the hot deserts of southern California, Nevada, and Arizona?

    • @moseleyfamilyadventures4298
      @moseleyfamilyadventures4298 Před 7 lety

      Jim Scott By the way, this is Kari, Chris Moseley's wife. I use his profile to comment. Good point but there is nothing you can do to relieve yourself from the heat if you want to go outside unless there is water around to swim in. You can bundle up in the cold and as long as you have all your gear on, your fine and can enjoy it for hours.In the heat, you are much more a prisoner to the indoors which I hated. I'm outside year round here in Michigan. Much more than I ever was in Arizona. Arizonans have it worse than those in cold climates. Three months of winter at the MOST here in Michigan and that's it. The rest of the year is gorgeous.

    I first visited Phoenix last summer for a few months. Coming from Denver the dry heat and Intense sun didn't bother me because Denver is the exact same way I. that regard as Phoenix. Phoenix is a nice area but not city. No urban core or large downtown. Just tons of sprawl. Traffic I thought was really nice and no where near as jammed as Denver though I do think the drivers in Phoenix drive way to fast. The freeways are also nice and modern. The tap water there is the worst. For anyone thinking of moving to Phoenix make sure you're moving there for the outdoors and close proximity to CA or Vegas Or the Grand Canyon. If your moving to Phoenix and expecting it to be a dense walkable city with a large urban core you will be very disappointed. Nightlife in Phoenix is terrible even on Mill Ave and old town Scottsdale. It's a beautiful place all in all and I think the Sonoran desert is beautiful.
