  • This place is like ICAST for OLD SCHOOL lures! This year ol' Retro attended the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club (NFLCC) National Meeting in Springfield, Illinois. This even draws antique fishing tackle enthusiasts from around the country, and is a great place to meet fellow collectors, see priceless tackle collections, and get some great deals on vintage fishing lures and tackle.
In the first instalment of this two-part episode, Retro goes picking for vintage lures at the convention center hosting the NFLCC show. There we get a look at some old school gold, including Fred Arbogast lures like the Jitterbug, Hula Popper, Tipsy, and Stickleback. There are also some epic displays of Heddon Lures, including the man with the world's largest Heddon River Runt collection. We also see some forgotten lures from grandpa's tackle box like the Mercury Minnow and the Daily Double, and novelty lures like the Cotton Cordell Prez, the Heddon Big Bud, and the Powerpak Shad.
If you are an antique tackle collector or just like to bass fish with vintage rods, reels, lures, or equipment, the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club shows are worth a visit...and tell 'em Retro sent ya!
The National Fishing Lure Collectors Club (NFLCC) is a non-profit, educational, international organization founded in 1976. The primary objectives of the NFLCC are to foster an awareness of fishing tackle collecting as a hobby and to assist members in the location, identification, and trading of vintage fishing-related equipment.

As a young fisherman (28) these kinda interviews and this history is awesome and im so glad these guys have kept the passion for fishing so long
I hope to so the same
    Tight lines fellas !

Man, those guys are living, breathing encyclopedias of vintage gold! I could listen to Ed Brown talk for hours. The man just bubbles over with enthusiasm and joy for River Runts. You definitely have to visit him at home and document his basement. I almost regret joining the NFLCC now...because I'm already budgeting in my head for next year's big event and my wallet feels significantly lighter (covering my gleeful eagerness in shades of fake regret! Ha!).

In the 70’s every kid with a tackle box had a jitterbug. I have quite a few now. It was awesome to see the interview with Sam.

Them pencil plugs are used for river walleye fishing, my grandfather use to make pencil plugs for a living in Port Huron Michigan, my father still make the blanks and I paint them not saying these are ours that are on this show there not, there are lots of
of pencil plug makers, our plugs are all still made of wood, there all worth the money excellent baits for river walleye fishing, excellent show by the way.

Man this makes me look forward to the Pigeon Forge NFLCC this coming January. Thankfully it's about 30 miles from my house so I'll be going over for several days and hopefully do some room shopping. Have you ever done any videos on Boots Anderson? He made the first square bill lures and started The Original Tennessee Shad company. If you'll shoot me a message on IG I'll send you some information. Boots also trained Fred C Young and showed him how to make lures. All those guys were from here in east Tennessee, lots of great history. I have some other interesting stuff I'll send you that a friend gave me.
