    Your neighbor sure takes great care of his fishing tackle. That box and contents tells you a lot about his favorite ways he liked to fish. If you wanted to know the best method to fish prop baits he certainly is one to ask. His choice of lures tells me he fished shallow areas most. The metal lip lures he used for trolling deeper water more than just casting them. If this is all his tackle he was not a soft plastics or jig angler. He is meticulous and very organized about how he maintains his fishing equipment. A good idea that I use and works for storing treble hook baits; is using silicone hair bands to secure the hooks on my hard baits. It prevents them from rubbing the finish and they don’t tangle together. I can’t say what that lure was any more than you can you asked about. There are so many lures even seeing them all would take two lifetimes if that is all you did. I will say one thing for you; you are one devoted old school fishing fanatic. I am so happy to see Uncle Josh’s pork baits making a comeback. If you fish cold water there nothing made of plastic that works as well as pork frogs on a jig. One bait last so long it will amaze anyone who never use them. Spinnerbaits are lures that can do everything. They may not work as well as others do for specializes uses; but those types of lures can’t do what a spinnerbait can.

    I have a very similar box, but in two tone blue and with three more drawers. It was my bass box in the early 80's or so. Surprisingly many of the baits in that box are a dead match for what I have in mine. I used to keep my baits sorted by depth, with one drawer for stick baits, one for top water, one for shallow lip baits, and one for deep divers. The bottom drawer on mine has a box of small spinners, a few Mepps assortments, another drawer has some frog baits and mice lures and one has all terminal tackle, spare hooks, and some spare reel parts and tools. I think mine says Flambeau 2277 on the door.
    Back then my go to reel was my Daiwa GS20 on a Fenwick Lunker Stik Rod. All of which I still have.
    As I got more into fishing back then I tended to set up a box for a particular area. I had a box for FL, a box for MO, a box for PA, etc. As i got into surf fishing, my lure collection grew faster and I started buying Phantom boxes, of which I currently have a half dozen of them full of 8 to 12" surf lures. Not to mention a few cases of lures I bought and never opened.
    I actually stumbled on one of my old boxes from PA the other day, a Fenwick 35 with the possum belly beneath. I had stored it away in a huge box when I moved and just never unpacked it about 25 years ago. To my surprise I had stashed two brand new Daiwa RG1500 reels in the bottom. The top is packed full of lures from back in the day. I've been slowly gathering up all my old boxes in one place. After 50 years or so I've accumulated quite a few. I always strongly preferred the Fenwick boxes with Flambeau being a close second. The Plano boxes always meant stuck drawers and weak latches.

    There were two antique baits that wasn't there but I would love to see you fish them so others may see and appreciate. Many young anglers don't not have the faintest clue what a Lazy Ike is, or the Helin Flatfish. These two baits were legends, and at one time both were used by fishermen in the south and north parts of the country. The Flatfish is another bait that is best fished slow. That side-to-side action of the Flatfish was too enticing for bass, musky, or pike to resist. Still used up north and goes by another name now. What can I possibly say about the Lazy Ike that has not already been spoken to. It was my number one fish catcher in rivers, lakes, and small ponds. The #4 Model in frog pattern or gray-scale were one and two with myself in the 70's. I fished the flatfish in frog pattern using the Model "M2" Flatfish or solid black pattern. Flatfish and Ikes could be bought in different sizes and many different patterns. I settled on these two baits for 50% of my time fishing. The top water baits of the Heddon Zaragossa , another great bait gone by, and the Shakespeare Swimming Mouse in dark black or gray were good in the Spring and fall while fishing in the river. Fishing calm waters of lakes or ponds these two could be used in summer time also. Thanks again Mr. Chris for another retro video on the old baits! David

    • @RetroBassin
      @RetroBassin  Před 3 lety

      Man, David, thanks for the great insight on those two baits! I always sort of considered them different brands of the same bait, but maybe that needs to change! Adding those to the Retro Idea Book for sure!

    Storytime: Years ago when I lived in Texas and fishing my new "Buster Boat" (little 2hp Suzuki engine, the boat's name was "Tig o' Bittie') on another small lake, the silver bass went wild again. I had a new popping lure for them! It was small, with a single short white buck hair tailed hook. It was made of clear plastic that you could twist it off in the middle to add different color paper or whatever to change it up, with an 'o'-ring in the middle. It would destroy! Do you remember it?
