Boss went on vacation and we had shop set up at a place where I could make a large run of cutting boards, butcher blocks and coasters.
19 cutting boards, 8 end grain butcher blocks and 41 coasters in all.
Turns out to be twice as much work as I was hoping. 23 days straight from start to finish.
At the request of a few amazing people I have set up donation links for those who want to take another step in supporting me and this channel.

Beautiful work! It's reassuring to find out that I'm not the only one who is surprised when projects take "twice as long" to build as we thought they would! Hahahaha!! DD
Hahaha!! Thanks
👍 CZcams's whatever-it's-called suggested one of your videos. I "Sorted for most popular" and chose this one.
Very, very nice! Thank you. ✌

Hi Kris.... These boards are beautiful. I going to attempt getting into the craft myself. I have quite a bit of tools, machinery already.. My biggest issue. I'm confined to a wheelchair.. Paralyzed from the waist down for 19 years now. I'm now 42 years old. Keep at it.. Your craftsmanship is amazing man.
well done Ed! You sir are inspiring.
it's a mind blowing work
Thank you!
You do amazing work. I've been binge watching your videos. I am a beginner and trying to start me a little shop here in north carolina. I wish I had a quarter of your talent and knowledge of these boards. I couldn't tell you where to start on getting those patterns you have done. I need you as a teacher lol. Awesome work man.
super love ur vids !!!!
It's amazing how many collors of wood there is.😮 I favor the bords with the grains going in differentieret direktions, but would be tempted to hang it om a wall as dekoration 😊
Wow those are incredible! I like making boards as well but haven’t gone to that extreme yet! Keep them going,
Thank you! Will do!
very nice
I sincerely enjoyed this endeavor. The boards are beautiful. I like the traditional patterns best, but the digital wood camo was cool.
Thank you Steven, really appreciate that!
They are beautiful cutting boards I can just hope one day I can be half as good just getting started Woodworking
Thanks you, best of luck!
Skills are evident...
wow that's a lot of work i make one in 3 days good job dude just found your video
New subscriber!
Some really boards!
Thank you!
“Great”
Didn’t get a chance to go through the comments but had the idea of finding a second hand proofing oven for making dough when baking. This might be a good alternative to curing the butcher block conditioning.
Thats an interesting idea, Thanks!
Would love to make a beauty like that
woodworking at at it's best
Stellar work, Subscribed.
Thanks!
Lots of work. Nice boards.
I see you put a lot of works and money in the finish, here’s my experience.
I made a bunch of boards a while back, and after watching a number of videos and asking questions, it appeared that the best, easiest, cheapest, durable and fastest way to finish the boards is to saturate the wood with mineral oil first. Use a bin and fill it with the oil that’s sold by the gallon online (it’s all food grade) and dip the board for 15-30mn, or longer if you want. Take it out and let it drip. Get a wax melting pot like they have at a wax salon and melt white or yellow beeswax beads with some mineral oil for easier application. Not expensive and a small bag goes a long way. Apply the melted wax and oil quickly with a pad on the wood and let set. Use a cotton cloth to wipe off the excess and you’re ready to fatten the rubber feet.
Howard’s butcher block is expensive for production work and not necessary. I got small 3oz plastic bottles at Walmart and filled them with the conditioner to give as a free sample when selling the boards so people could apply some right away if necessary.
That’s my two cents...
I am well aware of the other finishing methods. Howard's butcher block conditioner is only 53 bucks a gallon. At that price its about 75 cents a board. Well worth it when your selling boards at 200-350+ and is easier then the dip/drip and wax method. I will continue to use it as it is a superior product and easy to work with. I also include Howard's 3oz conditioner with the boards.
@@KrisDeVo ok, glad you have it all mapped out

Your work deserves this praise And good deeds should be praised
topp muito bom
I made 28. Yesterday.
Sell them all?
Hi Kris. Beautiful work my friend. I want to take a few days off and try them. Do you mind sharing the different dimensions of the strips you cut before you glued them together. On one board i could see 3 different sizes of strips but cannot determine the dimensions. Thanks
Thank you! Most of them are around 1/8" to 3/16". Depending on the starting thickness I sometimes do 1/4" to change it up a little. Most of the lumber is 4/4 but some is 6/4 ruff.
Love what you have acomplashed . Do you ever use red oak in the boards. How you make all those patterns in the cutting boards is unreal
Thank you, I dont use red oak.
Kris nice boards. Pls post measurments & prices.
Great looking boards. What thickness are you making them/cutting your staves too?
Thanks. I like to cut the edge grain boards at 1" to 1 1/4". The final thickness on the end grain boards are 1 1/2 to 2".
Amazing work! how do you take off the butcher oil after the fourth coat? and how the colour of the different woods become so brilliant?
When I work paduk with maple, paduk colors the maple if they are one next to the other
Augusto from Italy
Thank you! I just used dry rags to take off the last of the oil after the fourth coat. Definitely go through a bunch of rags. The dust in the padauk from sanding will bleed over into the other woods like your saying. I use an air compressor to blow all the sanding dust out of the wood before finish and that seems to help a ton.
@@KrisDeVo thanks a lot...tou are a great man
Amazing work!!
What router bit do you use to make the handle cut outs?
Thanks! It is a double flute straight bit.
I will love to know the "why" behind the 4 people that did not like this video cause it can't be about the boards....was Kris' beard not trimmed properly, was it the lighting, was it that some people just do not like anything? LOL....Great work man!!! I wish I had more thumbs to give some extra ups!!!
Thank you!!!
I’ve seen a lot of vids that get thumbs downed for their musical overlay choices. I personally like bluegrass and feel like it was done tastefully in this vid. Great job!
So what brought you from California to Alaska? I live in Alaska
Hello, how do you keep the orange from bleeding into the white maple during sanding? The dust is filling all the pores on my boards so the whole thing looks orange.
Blow it out with the air compressor before finish. If you still have issues you should sand to a finer grit
Awesome work. Do you use a drum sander sir?
Amazing cutting boards and video.
I am interested in wood working and want to make a cutting board as one of my first projects.
What wood and/or techniques did you use to get the black, green, and red colors? Thank you in advanced and my apologies if this is a basic general knowledge question.
Keep up the great work and videos.
Thank you! Not sure about the green. Maybe the hue was off on some of the video and pulling some color onto the Cherry. Black is Wenge, red is Padauk. All the wood is 100% natural, no stain or processing was used to pull color out. Hope that helps.
@@KrisDeVo Thank you, Sir. It's much appreciated. Have a great day.
Hi great boards are the striped ones long grain?
Thanks. Yes they are long grain, or called edge grain.
I love the work you do and enjoy your vd,I ask myself what kind of glue do you use? I knew regular carpenter wood glue won't be stay longer specially for catting boards because I washed every time I used.
Titebond 3
Super cool! The boards look great. I never thought about making coasters but I’ll give it a try. Obviously you’re not giving them all away, I assume you go to craft shows how do you price your stuff? Cheers from Ontario.
Thanks! Yeah the coasters are a lot of work for what they sell for. I haven't given any away yet haha. Most sell word of mouth from my wife and my Facebook page. I am now settling up a website to sell more. Thanks again. Cheers!
Love to try and make some like these, but where do you find the large variety of wood?
Local hardwood supplier here in Alaska. Hardware Specialty.
You made some beautiful cutting boards and coasters! What's the bright orange coloured wood?
Thank you. Its African Padauk. That and Wenge are my favorites.
@@KrisDeVo thanks! I guess my Padauk might be from a different place, mine is more of a red colour
@@OrangesII I did get a stick of Padauk that might have been more orange but for the most part it is the red color. Probably just the camera that gave it a little more of an orange color.
Are you gluing just one side or both sides of the wood. Beautiful work as always.
Thank you! One side. Just make sure you get glue to squeeze out of every piece.
@@KrisDeVo Thank you, yes and it seems like it would save a little time. I just started woodworking full time this year and appreciate all the help I can get.
Amazing work! Any tip where I can purchase the lumber online for a reasonable price? There is so many web store, I am not sure which has the good price... Down here in South Florida it's impossible to get these locally.
Thanks! If I can get this wood locally in Alaska I would think you could in Florida. Google exotic wood, looks like there is a few places in South Florida. Ive never bought wood online so im zero help there. Hope that helps, good luck!
Try bell forest!
Beautiful, I’ve recently started making edge and end grain boards. What would these sell for? Price?
Thanks. 100-350 is what they went for depending.
That’s sounds right. I made a beautiful end grain maple and Sapele ... with boarder. Like 6 glue ups, oiled and conditioned for about 5 days,, buffed to 600 grit about 4-5 times... grain where the maple met the Sapele would rise slightly depending on temp and humidity etc.
Amazing pieces of art! Both the cutting boards and your video's ;). Can I ask which musicians I could search to find this genre? Greetings from The Netherlands!
Thank you! Im really not sure who they were. From youtube studio audio library under bluegrass I think. Cheers
La madera del Noni da un tono amarillo único
How do you prevent the boards from cupping and bowing? I suppose they cup even before you finish doing them.
Getting the grains to be opposed to each other during glue up is huge. If too many are going the same direction they pull and cup. Once they have settled in you might have to shim an plane them flat on a sled.
Amazing cutting boards, I love them all!
I'm curious, price like what do the cutting boards cost?
Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you! The cutting boards ranged from $155 to 245 and the butcher blocks from $280-500 Cheers
@@KrisDeVo Worth every cent!!
What method do you use to flatten between operations ? Planer? Sanding?
Planer
Are most hardwoods ok to use for cutting boards? Does oil content matter?
I would say most are okay but not all. Most Oak is not good because its so porous. Although every one uses Padauk, me included and thats pretty porous. I don't think the oil content of the wood matters much.
excellent job where do you get the lumber ???
Local
what model of planer is that? I can see that it is a DeWalt, but they have several models.
DW735X. The only difference between the X and non X is the out feed tables which are a must have if you dont build some into a planner station.
Where Do you get this type of hardwoods from (anyone can answer pls)? The only ones i can search up are hardwoods for flooring.
Look up exotic hardwood in your area
Bell forest
Amazing work buddy .. i was wondering what sort of wood is used ? :)
Thanks. I have all the info in the description. Made from:
Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Padauk, Wenge, Purple Heart.
thats great work.
How can one do a cutting board without fancy power tools?
Would it work to flatten the surface with sand paper? :)
Would take a ton of work to sand hardwood by hand.
Go to your local home center and buy a large floor tile and glue a large piece of sandpaper to it. Clear your schedule for a while because it's going to take a LOT of time but it can be done.
You could always use a hand plane or search craigslist
They look great! Why did you decide not to add a juice groove?
Thanks! Just personal preference.
Will plywood shelves sag?
fantastic, what are the names of the red, black, brown and white woods?
Woods used are, Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Padauk, Wenge and Purple Heart

I have the details on the website now. Thanks! www.krisdevo.com
AWESOME. Where can we buy one?
Thank you for your interest! DeVo's Cutting Boards, page on Facebook is where you can buy one. I made another 33 of them for Christmas but am now sold out.
how much glue did you used? very nice.
I dont remember exactly but I think it was just over a gallon.
what do those boards sell for roughly if you don't mind me asking?
The edge grain boards sold for around 135 and the end grain boards sold for about 320.
@@KrisDeVo thank you for responding! The imfo and videos are a big help for someone like me just starting out in wood working.
I make a very large amount of end grain cutting boards for my work. I feel your pain on the sanding of the end grain lol. What did it take you? 5 days of sanding? Lol. My arms start getting sore when sanding more than 10 boards at a time
Yes haha! Sanding end grain is a killer. I think I'm going to take them into a shop to run them through a drum sander next time.
@@KrisDeVo just bought a twin drum sander at a bargain price on ebay from someone who didn't know how to use it and it makes life so much easier. They do need to be connected to a serious dust collector though. Mine needs minimum 1200cfm so by the time you add up ducting losses, I ended up buying a 2300cfm unit. As my workshop is about the same size as yours it's taken me a weeks work to make enough room. All the best
@@geoffsemon7411 Thats great! Someday I hope to have one too. Just no way I can/want to add something as big as that right now.
