  • @bluebirdconundrum
    @bluebirdconundrum Před měsícem +10

    On the last extended scream (before the last chorus), Brad Delp reaches a note that most musicians agree is almost superhuman for a person with his range and tone. I've heard two pro singers say that they simply can't understand how he was able to hit it. Whatever the case, "More Than A Feeling" is one of the most iconic rock songs ever written; it gets played everywhere to this day and I wouldn't be surprised if it was still in heavy rotation a hundred years from now. It is not one of my favorite songs but it is definitely the epitome of an anthemic 70s guitar-driven pop song, and in that sense it is indeed perfect.

    Ah, the glory days of my youth.... where you would hear songs like this BLARING FROM SPEAKERS EVERY DAY. Either in the car with mom and dad, at the skating rink, a friend's house, or in the backyard while playing with friends and the radio being on.
    You know, there IS something to be said about growing up during the 70's that just can't be repeated... the sheer number of TALENTED artists AT THEIR PEAK performing everywhere you turned.
    Because today, sadly, the industry seems to be TOO focused on "manufacturing" entertainment than anything else.

    Brad was truly the nicest guy I've met in the music industry.

  • @fhare666
    @fhare666 Před 2 měsíci +42

    It's hard to relate in modern terms how massive an impact this album had when it came out. It dominated everything, every song was a hit, every song is a masterpiece, every guitar player had to figure out this unique sound. I think even today it's still the 5th highest selling debut ever. When Boston released their third album Third Stage, they sold out Boston Garden 17 consecutive days (and I went to one of those shows!). And the craziest thing is this is just basically one guy and a (fantastic) singer and a couple of drummers. Tom Scholtz wrote the songs, played all the instruments except drums, produced and engineered it, and built all the crazy unique sounding effects used on this album, because he was an MIT degreed electrical engineer in his spare time. He took the Boston sound and built a music tech company from it called Rocktron, where he made some of the best sounding pro musicians gear around for a long time. He is a certifiable genius who changed music forever and expanded the horizons of what rock music could be. And they are still out there doing it, despite the singer Brad Delp's sad passing a while ago.

    In September 1977 I was a freshman in college. The student dormitories were built around courtyards. In every courtyard there were windows that were open to the warm fall breezes, and in every courtyard, this song was blaring out from of one of those windows. It was the inescapable background music to everything happening on campus. I met a girl that September, and almost 50 years later when I hear More Than a Feeling, I still recall how I closed my eyes and she slipped away. A perfect song indeed.

    Brad Delp, the singer, has one of the most impressive voice of rock history, his tone is incredibly agreeable, and his range his unequalled. Sadly, he left this world...
    Tom Scholz, the guitarist, is also a tremendous keyboardist, and an MIT electricis engineer who created his own amps and pedals, that why Boston sound is unique!

      Definitely NOT a garage band. Yes, Tom Scholz recorded almost the entire first album in a home studio, but it was a then state-of-the-art studio he designed and built. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from MIT and was also a project manager at Polaroid. He holds several patents for musical electronic devices he invented and used on his recordings. Tom played almost all of the guitar, bass, and keyboards on the first album, with only the drums and Brad Delp's vocals not performed by him. He was and is a perfectionist who produced multiple tracks to get the layered, rich sound he wanted - the antithesis of the definition of a garage band. In fact, Boston did not exist as a band until well after the first album was released and the label pressured Tom to form a band to tour in support of the album, which had rocketed to the top of the charts and was receiving very heavy airplay on radio nationwide. He never enjoyed playing live for the first years of the band's existence, much preferring crafting and recording his songs in his studio.

    Was fortunate enough to see Boston live many many years ago. They were as perfect live as they were on their albums. They played for 2.5 hours with one intermission in between, which was filled with Tom Scholz, the lead guitarist playing organ during the fifteen minute break that lead into Foreplay/Long Time. One of the greatest live shows I've ever seen. And yes, Brad Delp hit every single high note he sang. It was incredible.

      Waa that by chance at Arco Arena in Sacramento? They did an extra long show in Sac because Gregg Allman was supposed to open but got sick. Tom did the organ solo in a Phantom of the Opera outfit and the largest pipes for a pipe organ I've ever seen came up from behind the stage and we were right up front and could feel the vibration of the pipes go right through our bodies. Such a great show and Brad's voice was incredible live.

    Miss Madalina ( Bisscute ) As for you Last video with Pat Benitar you seem to enjoy the Mini Head banging over the softer Artsy sound so ( Heartbreaker ) In my Humble Opinion is the way to Go !!! Yes she was
    Small , However she is an amazing Rocker With a Strong & Fierce stage presence with as you have witnessed an incredible Vocal ability 😊
    She Has amassed a long list of top 10 hits over her career !!! Pat & Maddonna were filling the Raido & MTV with amazing music 🎶 As I stated Pat was Rock as to where Maddonna was the Artsy Dance song writer In my humble opinion 👍

    One of my all time favorite songs. A classic by Boston. Still hits hard all these years later. The vocals and instrumentation are perfect.💯 And the lyrics are so relatable. Who has not had a 'Marianne' walk out of their life and later very much lamented it? 😢

    And just think, the debut album, including this song, was recorded in the lead guitarist's basement.
    Of course, the guitarist is an MIT graduate and a former engineer at Polaroid, and he created his own amplifier, The Rockman, for the signature sound.
    Best-selling debut album in history, until Thriller.

    Perspective: It is likely this was recorded before your *parents* were born. This entire album is top-shelf. Every single track is a winner.
    F'ck the golden disc; they should have sent this out with Voyager, which launched 11 months after the album was released, and reached interstellar space (left the solar system) over a decade ago. That's how long this album has stood the test of time, and I imagine it will continue for many years to come.

    When I was in ninth grade, Boston played the State Fair here. My dad asked me if I wanted to go. Being an ignorant kid I passed, not wanting to see some band from the 70’s. Two years later I started listening to classic rock and have been kicking myself ever since. Tragically, the lead singer decided he didn’t want to be alive. Other great songs from Boston include Higher Power, I Had a Good Time, and Don’t Look Back.

  • @keithdean9149

    You are not far off on the year; this song was released in 1976. As a band Boston has only released 6 studio albums, "Boston" (where this song comes from) in 1976, "Don't Look Back in 1978, then taking 8 years to release their third album "Third Stage" in 1986, 8 more years to release "Walk On" in 1994, 8 more years for "Corporate America" in 2002, and in 2013 they released "Life, Hope, & Love." Not an extensive catalogue but a great one.
