Connor is watching over his younger brother Henry for the day. Henry is ill and keeps insisting that he hears noises in the home that sound spooky. But Connor is skeptical, thinking his younger sibling is making a big deal out of nothing and is being dramatic.
But Connor also begins to notice strange things happening: his keys are moved from where he placed them. These suspicions and fears come to a head when Henry calls Connor in a panic, believing the house is under attack. When Connor arrives, he discovers Henry's fears are all too real -- and it's up to him to keep them safe.
Directed by Quinn McHugh Fluet from a script written by Jack Caron, who also plays the lead role of Connor, this horror short has an almost old-fashioned sense of thrills and chills. Instead of creating spectacles of violence or developing a high-concept premise, the storytelling leverages the weaving of uncertainty, doubt and misinterpretation to generate suspense and tension, making for a satisfyingly creepy watch.
Finely written, edited and directed, the film has a low-key, relaxed naturalism in its visuals, reflecting the story's grounding in a relatable, everyday reality. The heart of it is the relationship between the brothers, painted here as a seemingly wiser, skeptical older brother and a more vulnerable younger one, who keeps insisting he's hearing and seeing things.
Connor chalks this up to animals and Henry's overactive imagination and he doesn't take Henry seriously. As the brothers, actor Caron and Jordan Duffy have a believable tug between exasperation and affection, capturing too how siblings can often not quite listen to each other, responding instead of a dynamic instead of a person.
But soon Connor has his doubts, which come to a head with Henry's call. In many ways, the film is a masterclass in the power and effectiveness of film directing, taking the seemingly grounded and simple dramatic ingredients of the storytelling and elevating them with sound, editing and imagery to a pitch of dread and suspense. As Connor realizes that his brother is indeed right about the strange noises, the power of the storytelling pulls viewers into the uncertainty the brothers experience as their home is invaded by the strange presence.
Based on a true story, LATCHKEY ends with a simple answer to the question of who the "ghost" is. It appeals as a nicely well-told story, but it also illustrates the dangers of not believing people when they tell us something is wrong. Connor thinks Henry is being dramatic, but by minimizing Henry's perspective altogether, Connor also overlooks the real possibility of a threat close to home. After watching this a second time... It's clear that real people can be one thousand percent scarier than ghosts.

I have watched hundreds of movies. This one immersed me in the situation better than any big budget film. I hope this catches the attention of someone to get all involved in the making of this some recognition.

Lock the doors with the spares and leave all keys in their keyholes turned halfway. Call police. I think it should work till morning at least, then call a locksmith.
Both my kids were latchkey and this was my worst fear, them being careless. The older brother was very careless and dismissive with his younger brother. He didn’t secure the house and making fun of his brother’s fears was a total dick move. Always follow up when things don’t look right. Even though the murder rate was no way near where it is today, I always locked doors and checked windows when entering and before retiring for the evening. I lock my car doors as soon I get in my car. You can never take your safety for granted. Never.

In some parts of the country, guns would be involved and somebody would end up dead.
Would have liked an ending even though we heard police sirens. Great suspense and sense of danger. Very good acting/directing/soundtrack. pet peeve: Why do people cast actors that don't smoke to smoke in films? It's always awkward.

2:30 neither of them smoking added to the narrative. I was a 35 year smoker and I can tell you neither of those actors is a smoker. it is totally faked and detracted from the scene. Smoking is not a requirement unless it is an integral part of the story like if the character suffers from lung cancer., If you feel the need for an affectation, there are lots of others to use. get creative.

Towards the end of the film I was joking that the ghost is probably the straight white male trying to get back into the picture. One minute later I thought I might have been right.

That's it? This was so well made. Fantastic acting, dialogue, cinematography and editing. Everything was immediate, believable, and scary.
But you need to learn a thing or two about story structure. The audience should not be left screaming, "AND THEN WHAT??".
It doesn't have to be a happy ending. But it has to be an ending. You have to release the emotional energy you have built up. You have to bring the story to a close.
CInema and television hinge upon a sort of contract with the viewer. They agree to let you take them on a journey and you agree to make it worth their while.
This short fails that test.
