I had a babysitter who had a yellow lab, completely untrained. I was stressed about school stuff one day and started having a mental breakdown in the corner of one of the back rooms. I look up and her dog walked in, looked at me, and came over to lay his head in my lap just like this. I think it's more than just training... it's instinct. When they sense someone they trust in distress, they can't help but find a way to comfort them. There's a reason dogs are amongst my favorite animals.

Out of every character in the movie, he had it the hardest. And yet he's the most optimistic. He's living proof that you shouldn't let trauma consume you.
It's not so new. In Lethal Weapon 4, we learn that Leo was an orphan. And yet, he's always in a good mood. A more extreme case is Sid in Ice Age: his parents are constantly abandoning him, his best friends are not the nicest animals ever and he goes along with that.

Here they pretty strongly indicate that while Perrito's age has prevented him from fully processing the trauma, he is actually pretty wise, unlike Sid whose a fool through and through. Can't speak to any Lethal Weapon movie though.
The fact that they took that one super annoying comic relief character from every kids movie since the beginning of time and made them actually LIKEABLE and CUTE and FUNNY will never cease to amaze me. I love Perrito.
I feel like people who think that Perrito doesn't realize he has been through trauma are misunderstanding him. He knows what he went through is traumatic, but he is trying to tell them it in a way that doesn't convey that fact. He is just not realizing that they understand how traumatic it is even with his positive spin on it. It also is a general part of his cheery disposition. He's not in denial that it was bad, he's just trying to not traumadump onto other people.
While I agree, I think that furthermore it isn't so much that he isn't "trauma dumping," as much as he is both wise enough to know better than to dwell on the trauma like Kitty Softpaws does, and that it happened at a young enough age that his brain normalized what happened to some degree. It was traumatic and painful, but he "gets over it" less completely but more quickly. Compare this to Kitty Softpaws, who let's something mild by comparison tear her apart by dwelling on it. Perrito would have been mentally destroyed if he had done anything but move forward, which really does make him the expert at dealing with trauma among the characters presented. He isn't perfect, but it is a good lesson about the dangers of dwelling on trauma. Even if the trauma is only partially processed, dwelling =/= (meaningful, useful) processing, it just magnifies the problem.
It’s just a coping mechanism he had to adopt since before or after he was abandoned by his family, as u could see from his scars and shit it was a lot. Of course he knows he’s been through abuse but his body and mind doesn’t allow him to process that, as a protection method towards himself not because he doesn’t want to "trouble" or "trauma dump" on kitty and puss. Usually children who have faced abuse since a very young age show this kind of coping technique as their mentally not mature enough to process it yet, he deffo knows his situation was terrible but hasn’t fully accepted it. Tho he is wise because of his experiences [children with trauma usually are], he still has a lot to process in the future as he gets older. Irl, humans having this coping mechanism aren’t healthy and get therapy later in life when they are in a safe space [both mentally and physically] to process their trauma. At least that’s what I got from his character as I’ve seen clients very similar to Perrito when I was doing my internship under a clinical psychologist.

My understanding was the latter (in this case, aside from things he has figured out as an individual that would not be typical of children, such as the value of grounding). My understanding was that children normalize by accident: because their brains are still trying to figure out what normal is, as opposed to an active process.
It’s also the fact that he’s pretty smart, and he knows better than to cling to trauma It happened, yeah it’s upsetting that it happened, but it doesn’t change that it happened, more than that, it doesn’t change that it’s IN THE PAST Unless it’s STILL happening, there’s no point in clinging to that pain, and Perrito knows it It’s why he suggests that Puss and Kitty just TALK IT OUT, so they can move past it, so they can leave the pain in the past where it belongs Obviously we shouldn’t forget bad experiences, or else we could end up making the same mistakes that lead us to those bad experiences in the first place, but leave the pain in the past where it belongs
The fact how he acts is how he copes with his trauma. This is such a sad way for a coping mechanism 😭 Edit: It is a sad way but I get it. Seeing stuff as happy is better than seeing the horrors of it. I’m not crying about it either.

That scene legit got me through my first panic attack. It reminds me of my old babysitter's dog who did the exact same thing when I was having a stress breakdown. When my panic attack happened, I found a clip of this scene and remembered how I felt when my babysitter's dog had done the same. Then, when Puss' breathing starts to level out, I breathed with him to calm down and just looked at Perrito's worried but caring eyes. I love dogs so much.

I was so pleasantly surprised that they took puss his panic attack serious. Fully expected perrito asking him to rub his belly to make it stop/feel better since he did it twice already, rules of three of comedy and all that. Puss in Boots 2 did such a better job explaining anxiety than Velma. When I saw Puss having a panic attack, I felt sad for him because I know how it feels. Your heart’s racing, you’re running out of breath, you can’t feel your body, and everything is just so painful! But then of course help is on the way. I know it may sound crazy…but there’s also another film that depicts anxiety very well in PAW Patrol: The Movie. Chase had a fair share of his anxiety of Adventure City. So, when they had to go there to stop Mayor Humdinger’s madness, when there was a Humdinger Hyperloop train coaster made and the passengers were trapped on there, Chase tried to save them, but realizing it was way too high, that’s when they depicted a panic attack VERY well! I’m not gonna lie, I love the movie and I felt very bad for Chase when he had that panic attack. Normally you’d think it would be a dog basically cowering in fear, but when you get reality distortion, sounds fading and a heartbeat speeding up frantically, that’s when Chase has that panic attack. There’s also another to name in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. In one of Rocket’s flashbacks, when he frees Lylla, the High Evolutionary blasts her dead with a blaster, Rocket is wailing over this, and Floor begins having a panic attack while yelling “ROCKET, TEEFS, FLOOR, GO NOW!!!” over and over again. That broke my heart. As somebody who sometimes has panic attacks, it’s safe to say Velma lost! It’s kinda funny when you think about it. Have you seen the show Dead End: Paranormal Park? One of the protagonists has a panic/anxiety attack due to overstimulation in the third episode and it's depicted very well. She's also canonically Autistic and at one point says straight up that she has anxiety.

This is how you write a comedy relief character. Despite the name, their existence isn't meant to be a joke to the audience, its meant to relieve the audience and the characters when times are tough, usually via jokes but it can be other things as well. Make things less dark and gloomy.

I think Perrito is one of the characters with so much trauma to be honest. He’s a puppy, and yet he was put in a *sock,* with a *rock* in it, then *thrown in an river* and yet, he’s the kindest character of them all and also the most traumatized one.

This is actually a task that some PTSD service dogs or anxiety, alert service dogs are trained for, the behaviour is called grounding, and it’s meant to just make you focus on the fact that there’s some thing other than your own anxiety and fears, some dogs, do it by licking your hand others do it by just resting their head on your chest and sinking up their breathing so that you can follow along with their breathing and calm down, I think it’s amazing that they added that detail in because Perito wants to be a therapy dog and help people. (and for the record yes, I am aware that therapy dogs and service dogs are different things, I just think it’s cute that he pretty much self taught him self this grounding technique)

This is how you write a comedy relief character.
Despite the name, their existence isn't meant to be a joke to the audience, its meant to relieve the audience and the characters when times are tough, usually via jokes but it can be other things as well. Make things less dark and gloomy.

I think Perrito is one of the characters with so much trauma to be honest. He’s a puppy, and yet he was put in a *sock,* with a *rock* in it, then *thrown in an river* and yet, he’s the kindest character of them all and also the most traumatized one.

This is actually a task that some PTSD service dogs or anxiety, alert service dogs are trained for, the behaviour is called grounding, and it’s meant to just make you focus on the fact that there’s some thing other than your own anxiety and fears, some dogs, do it by licking your hand others do it by just resting their head on your chest and sinking up their breathing so that you can follow along with their breathing and calm down, I think it’s amazing that they added that detail in because Perito wants to be a therapy dog and help people.
(and for the record yes, I am aware that therapy dogs and service dogs are different things, I just think it’s cute that he pretty much self taught him self this grounding technique)
