New Mother Orangutan Tries To Care For Her Baby

  • New and inexperienced Mum Jingga is trying to look after her baby the best she can. She has clearly not spent time around baby Orangs or other mother Orangutans. We think she is actually trying her best but has such limited knowledge of being a mother. Fortunately the research team at Blackpool Zoo is monitoring them both very closely.
The first orangutan baby to be born at the zoo in 20 years
The newborn baby is a critically endangered bornean orangutan born to first time Orangutan mother Jingga
CZcams sensation Jingga has had social media fame before when a video featuring her went viral back in 2015 - viral video - monkey sees a magic trick
The video was filmed of her in her previous home Barcelona Zoo in Spain
Jingga move to her new home Blackpool Zoo in 2017 to join her new Blackpool Orangutan family as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
14 year old Jingga was born in Barcelona in 2009 to mother Jawi and Father Karl
Now Jingga is settled at Blackpool zoo and has given birth for the first time to the tiny baby boy orangutan which has yet to be named
The father of the newborn baby orangutan is 13 year old Kawan who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
We have recently added Blackpool Zoo to our list of zoos that we will be frequently visiting to film the apes, so watch out for more footage of this fantastic zoo. Blackpool has Gorillas and Bornean Orangutans and we were really impressed with both areas.
There are currently 5 Bornean Orangutans in one family group at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga
Alpha Male Kawan and the new male baby orangutan

I saw a video of an orangutan mum in a rehabilitation center. The mum did'n know what to do, especially how to nurse. The baby had to be taken away. Then someone had an idea: there was an employee (human) who was nursing her baby. So, as a last resort they decided to show the orangutan what to do. The orangutan watched attentively - and learned!

She doesn’t seem to know what to do?! She’s very curious and gentle, although I’m not understanding the way she keeps patting the baby like she’s trying to burp it. I so hope that the caretakers are providing support and guidance to Jingga, and supplementing milk for her baby if she isn’t nursing enough. Thank you to the person who posted about the other video showing that Jingga was nursing and caring for her baby; that was a huge relief🥹💕. "Trying" being the operative word here. I don't blame Jingga. Her situation hasn't prepared her for motherhood. As others have stated, hopefully we just aren't getting to see where the baby is feeding or hopefully the human caretakers are doing it. I've seen enough Orang videos to know the baby should be clinging close to mom for warmth and suckling and from what we've seen this poor newborn isn't getting that. If these shadows remain unchanged, I see an empty patch of straw where the baby orang once sat.

Seems many people are concerned about the mom and new baby. Please contact Blackpool directly with your concerns. And refrain from criticizing mother ape from not behaving properly … this is in part a learned behavior in natural surroundings. There may be good reason for concern yet they can only be addressed by zoo caretakers.

It appears that the infant is either getting Jingga's milk or she's allowing the staff to feed it. Jingga is shaking/patting the baby to offer comfort/soothing just has human mothers do and some other primates. I'm assuming that Jingga is also allowing the baby to latch on to her when she wants and this is just not being shown to us viewers in these videos. If not, is the staff going to need to intervene before it's too late and hand rear the baby until Jingga can adequately provide motherly care?
People should not judge Jingga too harshly. She's a new mom and it's not like she has a manual telling her how to be a mother. Primates learn mothering skills from their own mothers and other females in the troop. First time human mothers struggle too, but at least we have books, videos, midwives, pediatricians to consult.
Blackpool Zoo should have been working with Jingga to build trust while Jingga was pregnant. They should have also been assisting her to teach her how to be an orangutan mother as other zoos do with first time primate moms. If they have been doing this then that hasn't been shown to us any uploaded videos. Some primates will hand over their babies to their human caretakers for feeding and helping to raise their infants depending on how much they trust their caretakers.

This is somewhat difficult to watch as mother Orangutan obviously does not know what she is doing. I felt badly for the infant. I hope the zoo is monitoring the situation because, if not, the baby isn't going to survive.

Could it be that there’s no milk coming from mum ? therefore there’s no incentive for the baby to persist in it’s attempts to nurse. Mother Nature does a good job of priming newborns to seek out nourishment, but if there’s nothing there except maybe a small amount of colostrum there’s no ‘reward’. The little guy seems to have a
big round swollen belly too, but it’s really hard to get a good look at him, so I could be wrong. 🤞

Obviously, the baby is getting Jingga's milk or she's allowing the staff to feed it. And Jingga is shaking/patting the baby to offer comfort/soothing just has human mothers do and some other primates. I'm assuming that Jingga is also allowing the baby to latch on to her when she wants and this is just not being shown to us viewers in these videos. If not, is the staff going to intervene and hand rear the baby until Jingga can adequately provide motherly care?
People should not judge Jingga too harshly. She's a first time mom and it's not like she has a manual telling her how to be a mother. Primates learn mothering skills from their own mothers and other females in the troop. First time human mothers struggle too, but at least we have books, videos, midwives, pediatricians to consult. If you are going to judge, then perhaps judge the zoo for not working with her as other zoos do with first time moms and building that trust with caretakers so she will come to them and hand over the baby.
