  • An unexpected arrival comes to Chester Zoo in the form of a baby orangutan. As some of the orangutan family's younger members struggle to cope, keepers must find a way to help them adjust to the new arrival!
    From Secret Life of the Zoo Season 1 Episode 6, "Black Rhinos": In Chester Zoo, which is a home to ten critically endangered black rhinos, female rhino Kitani is introduced to her new mate Magadi, but with injury a high risk during mating, keeper Babs is concerned that Kitani may struggle to defend herself. Meanwhile, there's a shocking arrival to the orangutan family when a new baby arrives - despite keepers not knowing the mother was pregnant...

And enough care that they were able to reproduce without much notice. Many primates are kept as pets or solely as money-making opportunities for people, and others are killed for bush meat. These guys are lucky. Unless we plan to return land to them and curb our desire for using animals for our entertainment, orangs will only exist in zoos and private sanctuaries in the near future. Is it better to let them go extinct now, or should we keep them around in hopes we’ll get our act together in the future and we will be better stewards of the earth? I don’t know.

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 Před 3 lety +7

      I agree. After watching a lot of videos from BOS, I can't understand why this zoo's vet is so clueless. He didn't even know the mother orangutan was pregnant so that is very telling--no regular physical check ups. So no one noticed if the mother had a bulging belly, even a small one?

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 Před 3 lety +6

      @@whatevergoesforme5129 It's possible the vets didn't know she was pregnant, especially if this zoo has a hands off policy with the animals, something that many do. That said, one of the first signs of pregnancy in orangutans is a swollen vulva, something I would expect the keepers to notice as they work with the orangutans on a daily basis but I don't know how much close up interaction there is. What surprised me the most, however, is the very short amount of time between births. I know captive orangutans don't need 8 yrs to teach their babies how to live in the wild but babies aren't fully weaned until around 5 yrs old so this mother is probably nursing both. It's just a surprising situation to me.

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 Před 3 lety +4

      @@Cara-39 For me, I wonder why they are surprised when an adult male orangutan is in the enclosure with them. In the wild, this would not happen. One commenter reacted to my term "rape " LOL and said orangutans have sex for fun like the bonobos but I doubt this was for fun. I may be wrong and the adult female was receptive but she still has a toddler to nurse. And the male orangutan can easily overpower her if he wants to so it can be forced sex. But all of these are speculations anyway since I am using how orangutans behave in the wild as my point of reference. However, I just believe and it is my opinion that the vets of this zoo have been incompetent. So poor mother and poor toddler. It is unnatural for orangutan to nurse and raise two at the same time.

If they are mating you should be checking just in case. I know in the wild Orangutans just roll with what happens but in a Zoo their life is in the keepers hands from Keeping them happy too making sure they are safe and looked after a lot can go wrong during a pregnancy and if your going to take care of them then by all means do it right.

Can't understand why the zoo vets didn't even know the mother was pregnant so I guess they don't do regular physical check ups. Plus, what do they expect when the orangutans are in captivity so the grown male could have his way with the adult female when he wants to, unfortunately.

We are 97% the same genetic makeup as orangutans. How would you like to live in a cage or enclosure your entire life and maybe even have to put on a show for people? It’s cruelty and it has to go.

      @whatevergoesforme5129 Před 3 lety +8

      @@elmerbefuddled2156 The zoo vet seems so clueless and trying to humanize these orangutans if you listen to his words. He should consult with experts from orangutan sanctuaries in Borneo, for example. What happened here is very irresponsible. They did not even know the mother was pregnant? Did she look the same the entire pregnancy? No bulging tummy, even a small one? Don't they give them physical check ups quarterly if they can't every month?

    • @elmerbefuddled2156
      @elmerbefuddled2156 Před 3 lety +3

      @@whatevergoesforme5129 Yes, was wondering the same - don't responsible zoos closely monitor their animal's health? A variety of check-ups at least twice a year? Guess not, this case. (To be fair, many zoos only do one yearly adult check-up because some animals have to be sedated & this can be risky.) But I completely agree about the humanizing of animals. Baby orangutans are often referred to as "children" & it's totally understandable - they are the sweetest little "human-like" creatures. But it's not right that zoo professionals have gone gaga with this sentimentality. As far as socializing goes, anyway. If they're going to attribute human qualities to apes & primates then they should also consider that these animals might also become depressed, anxious & affected by less than ideal social pressures & surroundings, like people too. A big difference being animals can't explain their unhappiness the way people can. And if care professionals are missing signs of pregnancy then they might also miss signs of depression. Not good.

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 Před 3 lety +6

      @@elmerbefuddled2156 Plus orangutans tend to be solitary so this environment is not natural and ideal to them. They are not chimps nor gorillas who live in groups. For me, it was obvious, the mother orangutan here was forced to mate by the adult male since they live together unlike in the wild where the female can run away with her infant or toddler (like the toddler orangutan here who is also forced to grow up too early which is so unnatural since if you watch videos of rescued orangutans in Borneo, they are still fed milk at 5 years old and even at 5, they are attached to their surrogates). An adult male will also move around and won't chase adult females with their clinging offspring to mate with them. The male will find an adult female who is not nursing or still taking care of growing offspring.
      Great apes do experience trauma and depression like humans, especially the baby orangutans who usually see their own mothers killed before their very eyes and then they become pets of those humans who either bought them or took them from their moms.
      When I say they are humanizing these orangutans. the vet said that the father is trying to be hands on since the mother has to take care of the infant instead of the toddler. What? They are not humans. In the first place, male orangutans leave the female after mating and it is up to the female to raise her offspring alone. The behavior of these orangutans have become more human because of human interaction as well. And that is why in successful sanctuaries whose goal is to release them into the wild, the surrogates and vets do their best to make them independent of humans little by little by teaching them orangutan skills as I call them. The poor toddler was robbed of a natural nurturer in her mom because a
      mother orangutan cannot take care of two at the same time. I hope they would guard the mother so that she won't get pregnant so soon.
