Mueller’s Investigation Has Created An Underworld Of Online Sleuths (HBO)

  • Sorting through the data of the dead - their pots, their knives, and the rocks they cooked on - in order to reconstruct how they once lived, is not so different from tracking the Special Counsel investigation.
On a Friday in February, Adrienne Cobb, 29, lab assistant in the archaeology department at Western Washington University, was trying to do both. She was digitizing data on artifacts found on a farm in Washington state that were about 3,000 years old, and keeping track of what was happening on Capitol Hill, where the House Judiciary Committee grilled Matthew Whitaker - then, acting Attorney General - about his involvement in Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign and its links to Russia.
Cobb’s an unlikely candidate for legal sleuthing. She’s a recovering heroin addict with no experience in journalism, and a preference for Ghost Adventures over Reliable Sources. (“I hate cable news.”) She has dyed red hair, rocks Daria-esque glasses, and tends to look at the floor when she isn’t absorbed by a screen.
She spends her free time - and some of her office time, too - tracking every update, big and small, in Mueller’s probe. She’s part of an online community of digital sleuths, amateur journalists, and statisticians, who commit hours upon hours of their lives to all things Mueller. Some have launched careers out of obsessively tracking the investigation’s twists and turns.
But for her, keeping track of Mueller’s work is about helping others feel less “helpless” in a wilderness of fast-paced, complex news that doesn’t always add up. She calls herself an “aggregator,” which seems simple enough, but it's tough work. She checks Twitter and Reddit three times an hour for new, relevant reporting, and saves links to those articles with the program, Evernote. Meanwhile, news of every White House departure goes in a separate spreadsheet that she’ll refer to in order to update her website, 45Chaos, which in granular detail, notes every staffer who’s left, whether and why they quit, resigned, or resigned under pressure (“R-UP”), and measures the length of their tenure in “mooches,” a metric born in Trump’s White House. (She goes by 10-days, not 11, though there’s a debate over how long Anthony Scaramucci really lasted as White House Communications Director.)
On the weekends, she wakes at 4:30 a.m. and never makes plans to leave the house for long - giving her just enough time for scan every article she’s saved to Evernote, for any new revelations. These get boiled down into weekly recaps that she posts every Monday to a Reddit forum called, appropriately, “Keep_Track.” Readers sometimes message her in appreciation or send tips, and her summaries have ballooned along with the news cycle to run as long as 5,000 words. On Monday, the process starts again.
“I get a lot of people who say, ‘I can't believe that all happened in one week,’” she said. “Or, ‘That feels like it was a month ago, because so much has happened.’ So I think there's value to seeing it all in one spot.”
There’s value, even for the other Mueller obsessives who, like Cobb, have become addicted to tracking the unknown-knowns.
Scott Stedman, a 23-year-old, started tracking Mueller’s probe while he was a political science major at UC Irvine. Within a year of graduation, his obsessive reporting and research has earned him bylines in major outlets and landed him a book deal (Real News, out in April). Stedman says he’s a fan of Cobb’s recaps. “I find them super useful. It’s a testament to how much information there is.”
Some of Cobb’s readers even donate - she makes about $150 a month through her Patreon account, and 76,000 people subscribe to the Reddit forum, where her work is pinned to the top, so any new members can get caught up on the fly.
“There was a New Yorker cartoon that came out this week that I think sums it up pretty well,” says A.G., the host of the popular podcast Mueller She Wrote, referring to a Julia Suits cartoon that some might see as an exaggeration but that many in this Mueller-obsessed world received with a ring of truth. The cartoon shows a conspiracist-type standing in a room, wallpapered in names ripped from Washington Post headlines, and string trying to connect them all.

Although I mostly enjoyed this video I'm curious why there was so much emphasis on Adrienne Cobb's flaws. Why the interest in how much she does this at work? To get her in trouble with her employer? Why bring up the heroin addition? And why suggest that her interest in Mueller is a substitution for that addition? I realize human-interest is important, but how about some positive things to balance it out. Was there a need to discredit her?

Vice has been as critical of the current administration as any media organization. You went into this story thinking that it was a negative Trump story and if turned out to be a character study of this awesome woman. The addiction and the mental motivations are all part of the story. You simply had your expectations averted by the content and then unfairly accessed the final product. Her Mueller obsession could have been replaced with any number of obsessions and the story would have played the same. You're focusing on the Trump aspect and complaining about what you feel is an unfair portrayal and you're missing the larger threads being woven throughout the narrative tapestry. You're missing the point of the story and letting your political bias cloud your viewing experience. I hate Trump as much as anyone but this story isn't about him or Mueller. Look a bit harder.

Not to undermine what she does, but I think some never Trumpers place too much faith in Mueller.
The institutions that allowed Trump to rise are corrupt, the anger that lifted him from his den is deep rooted. Getting rid of him is not enough, we have to prevent the next guy from doing the same thing.
A deep change and rethinking of democracy all over the world is needed to avoid that happening ever again. This includes making democracy more open, to avoid the powerlessness of ordinary people to brew into the anger of the trump voters, and the machiavelian cynicism and poisonous ideology of the alt right.

@@maximeteppe7627 "...democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." -Winston Churchill. In the USA democracy needs to be fine tuned by amending the constitution to abolish the electoral college. Trump would have lost in a popular vote. France did elect Macron but by a narrow margin. We need to figure out how demagogues are having so much success in countries that use the democratic system.

    • @maximeteppe7627

@@someguy2135 I believe fine tuning is an understatement.
Obviously any analysis in a youtube comment is gonna lack nunance but I'll give it a try. I largely put the far right push to a combination of a worsening of inequalities (rise of the working poor, gig economy, high anxiety regarding ecological and international crises). The rise of inequalities as laid bare the fact that the economy is rigged in favor of the few.
So there is a need for a policy of economic justice. But it's unsufficient to prevent the pattern from repeating (and I would argue the current system is ill equiped to provide the needed policies).
I would advocate a strengthening of participative democracy. The current status quo (vote for one of a handful of parties every few years) provides very little room for nuance and accountability, which favors demagoguery and scapegoating rather than serious policy debates.
decentralization, the possibility to revoke politicians mandate, ranked choice voting, liquid democracy and so on are tools that can be used to improve participation. The ultimate goal would be to fully democratize the economy.

@@JackgarPrime Why not? Because you can't have it both ways. You're either working for the greater good for the right reasons/cause,....or you're doing it for the money. This doesn't apply to all things/categories,...but in regards to social issues it is far more complex (it's part of what is wrong with world/society, no matter where you live in it, ALL societies/nations are doing at least SOME things wrong so to speak in regards to their economic beliefs and how it impacts their citizenry). Now, if her works prove socially beneficial/functional then she should be rewarded for her efforts in some manner, I would agree. But to do so 'for cause/money' outside what's best for society, is to IMMEDIATELY potentially (in the least) taint the data/info because from that moment forward, regardless of how one 'feels' about the fact ("oh she would NEVER do that"),....she would now be doing her work,...'for money' (at least in part) which indicates by virtue of business that it can and in some way will be manipulated to maximize profits. When what you do is 'for money',...it (in time) will NOT coincide with what is best for society at large, as our economic systems reward INDIVIDUAL wealth,...not wealth for masses. All economic systems are always IMPLEMENTED differently than they are said to be designed. Saying one thing, doing another,...such as socialist systems are supposed to balance things,....but only ever really concentrate wealth creating poverty/hardships for the majority which further enrich the already rich. Same as Capitalism, only going at it from a different perspective placing the onus for wealth/success on the individual as opposed to the state,...sounds good on paper yet somehow in the implementation,....it still creates mass poverty/hardship,...further enriching the already wealthy. No matter the intent/design,...via their implementation (a direct result of those IN CHARGE,....the same group in ALL economic systems,...the wealthy) all systems are implemented in a fashion that works for/rewards/enriches those who believe in creating wealth FROM the masses.

Butina never admitted to being a spy because she's not a spy. She failed to register as a foreign lobbyist, that's not a spy. Not citizens tend to get jail and most citizens get a fine. The people that have gone to jail for that, that are citizens can be counted on one hand.

I didn't see so many "hate" comments. People are beginning to wake up to find that the "Russian Collusion" narrative was just another hoax proffered by a partisan deep state and the complicite media. The "hate" is far greater in the minds of the left, than in the heart of the right. Truth is the new 'hate speech'.

@Mycel You realize you're doing the same thing, right? You're accusing an ambiguous faction of performing a psyop while using said accusation to justify discarding a much larger body of people's ideas. You're essentially calling everyone who disagrees with you a shill.

All the comments I've seen are about how negative and hateful the comments are. 🤔 It's like an Ouroboros of negative comments about a video searching for imaginary dirt by a company that pretends to be journalists.
