- When I heard Chicano culture had spread to Japan, I wanted to see it for myself. Who knew the culture I grew up with had a home so far from California? I met with stars Junichi Shimodaira, Mona “Sad Girl” and Night tha Funksta.

This is funny because in Mexico there’s kids running around with anime and Japanese gear and style. People are wild.
Recklessly Arrogant you are correct, we are a trip. I believe it’s due to the “grass is always greener” with us and that’s not always a bad thing. If you think about it in this case the world get a little smaller by appreciating other cultures.
It is funny. Car culture is a great example. Import car guys in the US are always hunting rare JDM (japanese domestic market) parts both OEM & aftermarket that weren't available for sale here. The opposite has become true in Japan, they started importing USDM parts to emulate the style of the American released models! Also a side note but did you know Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura do not exist in Japan. They are Toyota, Nissan, and Honda respectively. They only exist because in the 90s Japanese manufacturers didn't believe they could sell luxury cars under their own marquees here in north America. I've had a few people get outstandingly offended when I told them they're Lexus or Infiniti was actually a rebadged Toyota or Nissan! 🤣

As a Chicano, I think this is nice! I see this more as appreciation than anything else. They have the Mexico flag, so they know, and are aware ,of where this all stemmed from and aren't trying to pass it off as their own like others so blatantly do. Besides, learning about other cultures is a good way to keep your mind open and helps you learn more things.
Yeah, in the US many people outside of the West Coast associate low riding with 90s gangsta rap and mistakenly believe it originated with the African American community. At least these Japanese people are aware of the roots.
@@jag5014 African Americans are very aware of that. Y'all just immediately hate us.

There's no Hispanic culture and if it existed it wouldn't look like this American made bs.

El Moreno um hispanics do have culture
Indians don't get offended by cultural appropriation either. I feel only whites believe in this concept
What makes the Latino and Mexican people so beautiful is that we are not just one color.
We are white, we are brown, we're black. We come in all forms and colors unlike any other race on the planet which makes us unique and that's why most Latinos won't hate on other cultures unlike most cultures we know.
At first I’ll admit it was weird seeing Japanese people trying to act like what I grew up around being a Mexican in Chicago, but then I remember kinda being a weeb, liking anime, Japanese food etc. and I realized it’s okay to share cultures and I shouldn’t be a hypocrite
Nerd
Weebs in Chicago? Now I’ve seen it all
Maybe both chicanos and weebs are hypocrites
Cultural appropriation is such a stupid concept. It would mean ur not allowed to speak English unless ur British. Same for using computers or the s bend toilet.
Certain people will try to stop any cultural interchange from happening because cultural and racial division is how you control populations (people are too busy having petty arguments to focus on the real issues). Therefore, they try to change the optics of appropriation into something 'bad' even though it's just mutual appreciation of different cultures. Appropriation is good, caricature not so much. There's some nuance to it but there's a distinct difference.
I’m literally half Japanese and Mexican from southern California and have family in Japan, so this is actually really cool to see!

You mean your Japanese AND Mexican? Because they're not races, Japanese is a ethnicity/nationality and Mexican is a nationality

As a Mexican, who grew up always ashamed of my background and culture, this makes me so happy to the point I almost cried. To hear someone say they feel saved by something I tried so hard to cover up.. I feel strangely comforted. I don't find this offensive at all. This is beautiful.
That is beautiful. This is why we need to be a little looser with this "cultural appropriation" nonsense. Let people take up a culture that makes them "feel saved." A bit of freedom is all we're asking for (and I'm a liberal).
Lovely comment
Dont ever be ashamed of who you are. We are all people and we are all different. The world would be a boring place if everyone looked the same and liked the same stuff. Stay you
Rap / Hip hop is black American culture. In other words Mexicans express their culture through black music. It all comes from the black man at the end of the day.
@@Joshtherealdeal just let them have this one
Take note!! The difference in their appropriation is:
1) Acknowledging that it is CHICANO culture (not Japanese)
2) NOT lying claiming they invented it and are the best at it

This doesn't look like "cultural appropriation" to me. This looks more like cultural appreciation instead. With the internet and the various ways to travel so easy around our planet, it's not really a surprise to me that we see people loving different cultures they weren't technically raised in, and feeling a connection to it, and choosing to live their life that way. We all share this planet together.
No such thing as cultural appropriation. It’s just a divide and conquer technique
belieiving in cultural appropriation in the first place is a mistake
I'd say cultural appropriation is either using something in a way it wasn't meant to be used. Like if someone not apart of a religion were to wear something meant to be sacred just cause it looks cool, then that's appropriation. Now whatever you think is a appropriate reaction to it is what you think. This is just how I see it.
@@JibberJabJones I agree 💯
I have a problem with the idea of "appropriation" when the reason anyone is exposed to another culture these days is when it is SOLD through music, movies, fashion... If you are SELLING your culture, you can't complain about "appropriation"...
As someone who grew up in LA, I would love to go to Japan and see this. I love the idea of sharing cultures and it would be interesting to see what kind of flavor they might have added to it. I don't see it as appropriation. The saying "Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery" comes to mind when I see it. They clearly admire Chicano culture and try their best to emulate it.

If white people in America did anything remotely close to this you would all riot and scream appropriation.
me thatguy I know plenty of white guys here In “el chuco” El Paso, Texas who own low riders, and dress like cholos. They have been embraced into the culture because of their love and respect . Then again white people in El Paso are the minority. The Military brings in a lot of good people from all over the country. I look at the heart of an individual, if they are good people I could careless what color they are. If you treat people with respect and stand by your word, and can eat menudo on Sunday! Your good in my book!
I'm a chicana and I appreciate that they appreciate it, and it's not like they're wearing it as a costume, that's where I would consider it being cultural appropriation.
I agree
exactly
The Chican@ strugle is often revolving identity questions about belonging to one or the other ends of the spectrum, American or Mexican, but growing up with a Chican@ mom in the RGV I come to realize that our cultural existence is not strictly dichotomous and I think the cultural duality is the appeal in Japan..its the Japan culture "and" theChican@ influences.

It’s a beautiful thing to see, in the times where people are quick to rush into thinking something is offensive because one does not come from said culture, seeing something like this is amazing. As a Mexican seeing people appreciate what the culture is and having respect for it means a lot because they take time to appreciate it and educate themselves on stuff that an ordinary person might not even bother to look into. They have a subculture for everything
I know like jrpg games and fantasy anime or pretty much all of anime heavily influenced by the west.
Edit: for example medieval fantasy and western cowboys like cowboy bebop and trigun as well as vampires.
Most first worlds have a subculture for "everything". Particularly when you've got a population of 100 million+. Just look at America.
Mr. Smith let me know if you find the answer.... uh i have a friend who wants to know too...
@@mentoshoarder5175 Yea in Uganda they have a heavy metal sub culture.
Western games and cartoons are also heavily influenced by Japanese styles now.
Very cool and interesting!
I love this!! As a Chicano myself I love Japanese culture, games and anime. Glad they like something of ours ✌🏽
When I travel around the world I say I’m Mexican (Born in the US, raised in Tijuana) and everyone is nice, but if I say I’m American, they are rude AF to me.
Edit: I went I Mexico city and and they treated me bad because I'm from Tijuana and I have a "Tijuana accent" when I speak Spanish, who knew 😆
Sadly Americans tend to be rude af to everyone... So what comes around, goes around! A fact of life
@@MaRiORuIz1984 circle of life lol
@H Man of course not all Americans are bad, I think most of them are great! But honestly even I got my fair share of racism, even on vacation.
I'm a Mexican that lives in Mexico 🤘
@H Man american isn't a race
That’s why I never say I’m from America; I say Brooklyn.
The fact that they are embracing and learning about the culture just like makes me happy... that they aren’t just taking stuff and changing it.
Facts
Stfu
But what if they do change it and add their own Japanese spin on it? Would that be a bad thing?
This made me wanna cry ….
Fascinating video! Thanks!
It makes sense to me because of how much so many people love Japanese culture in Mexico as well. Especially with shows like DBZ. so it makes sense that there's people in Japan who have great appreciation the other way.
When Japanese gets passionate about something they take it in a different level
I know Just look at Pearl Harbor🤨
@@benjaminzepeda3703 Nah, I think Americans takes the trophy when it come to that type of dedication, they still do it to this day.
When Americans eat something they get fat 😂😟🤨
@@AMM0beatz Id rather be with the americans than WW2 japan
@@Jess-737 Um? There’s no such thing of being racist to Americans and I was making a joke🙁
"This world could exist outside of L.A."
Mexico: I'm a joke to you?
There is no Chicanos in Mexico
They are Mexican Americans in Mexico 🤦🏻♂️
Chicano movement was made up of Mexican Americans who felt under represented in areas of the US that used to be Mexico.
It’s okay delivert93 rookie mistake, but I get what you were going for
originality ain't your strong suit
there is plenty of chicano culture outside of LA. el paso, san antonio, chicago, etc.
This makes sense why Ohtani and Yamamoto signed with the Dodgers .
Kinda surreal.thanx for sharing .
I ain't Japanese or Hispanic, but I really think that this mutual exchange and appreciation between these two cultures is so fascinating! It's great seeing people get along like this!
Japanese deeply admire hispanic culture....that part i know from living in tokyo..
@@thiccfriedokra9189 heck yea 💪🏽
@Lykn Del Toro why u gotta hate on the mane he can talk all he wants lmao
Lykn Del Toro don’t be rude he just saying how we both get along and appreciate eachother cultures
@Lykn Del Toro no empiezas con esas mamadas. Ve y compra te un abrazó por se nota que lo necesitas
Japan? Chicano? Subculture? I swear CZcams teaches me something new every day
It's more useful than teachers at schools.
You've never heard of Japan?
I know it’s so cool!!!
did you just learn about japan now?
I never even heard the word "Chicano" until this video, this whole combo is so niche lol
as a chicana i’m so happy that a culture that i find so interesting and beautiful also finds my culture interesting and beautiful
Wow, this is very interesting. Its great to see the admiration between different cultures. We are quite used to see the opposite in this world (sadly).
I'm not Japanese or Mexican, but this is beautiful to watch 💙
As a chicana, I really think this is cool. I liked and appreciated that some of them actually looked into our culture not just appearance-wise and respect it. See a lotta comments saying its offensive. It really ain't if you dont exploit it
I agree! As a Mexican American woman. I can honestly say I'm super flattered! I grew up loving Asian culture especially Japanese culture. I was made fun of、kids bullied me and called me "wanna be Asian". And now I have two Japanese Mexican boys! So I cant wait to show them this amazing celebration of cultures 🌙😍😍
It's hard enough being a Mexican growing up in LA but then you have this amazing mix of cultures. What can be done but just love and respect everyone!
Moooore videos like this please.
Next will be on AMLW couples😍😁💕💕💕
Lokes This is what Japan does. They take something they think is cool/trendy that they don't really understand and copy it. But its mostly at the superficial level. They don't know why they have the imagery or why chicacos dress that way. They'll put the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe everywhere but wouldn't know what it means. They just put it because it looks cool. That culture they're adapting is never internalized. As a Filipina there is a lot of nuances that I can understand from chicano culture or Mexican culture (mostly because our two countries were tied for hundreds of years by Spain). Did you know that 10% of the Filipino language is Nahuatl? With Japan, there is no internalization. Its merely a copy. Japan is the most homogenous society in the world and these subcultures are a form of rebellion to not blend in with the others.
Well it's Japan. When they do something they'll do it right.
❣
Yes they did it in an awesome way and they clearly and explicitly say it's from Chicano culture they're not trying to appropriate anything so it's really awesome they're just sharing and appreciating other cultures really awesome
I was just having this conversation with my 50 year old Mexican dad. He had never heard of cultural appropriation. I explained what it was and gave various examples. He genuinely felt it was just people being interested in a culture and showcasing the tradition. It’s crazy how we say that older generations are more conservative and close minded but in reality it’s us young ones who are easily closed and offended. The older folks are also the ones who actually suffered the discrimination that would lead to the word cultural appropriation so only they have the right.
suzyblue28 right on. All day.
Exactly i hate that our generation is sensitive asf. It's weird seeing people freak out over people of other cultures liking things outside of their culture
Thanks to the liberal snowflakes who treat everything as harrasment.
yessss i totally agree! except we all have a right.
preach.
This is dope ❤️
They are doing great work
Chicano is a Mexican American these guys are more like Jalapeños
No mames guey 😂😂😂😂😂
Stay Lucky ME PASE 😂😂
El Coralichi chicano es para todos ❤️☝🏾
in what way????
i think he meant jalapenos, because they are on fire. :-)
Bro that “chicano shop” looks like every swapmeet out here 😂😭
Got that "3 for $10 Triple A shirts" vibe hahaha .
wow ...this is so interesting.
Fantastic ❗️
I liked when the homegirl Sad Girl said my culture saved her. Respect, Sad Girl!! 🙏🏽😤
I felt the same way. That was deep man!
I think one of the biggest honors a group can have is knowing their culture saved the life of another human being.
I am a Chicano living in LA. I love this video and think it's really interesting, but to locate Chicano cuture only in LA is to seriously diminish the community across the U.S. While Chicano culture certainly has strong ties to LA, it is a US phenomena with populations, especially along the border, that deserve more attention. We need more videos like this so that we can think about the importance of Chicano culture to American culture.
Nathan Romo Facts.
Chicano culture has been strong in San Antonio Tejas going back to the 1940s.
There is Chicano culture in San Francisco!
I agree. And to completely diminish why even we began calling ourselves Chicanos in the first place - the politics around this fact
💯💯💯
I fw the background music in the video
I love this❤
