Out of ALL of your videos that I have watched, I can’t tell you how much I genuinely appreciate these. Your struggle is such a real struggle for so many of us, namely me; that you give me hope. You are shining light where darkness can’t stay! Great job Sam! For recognizing that just because you want something and you have the money to get it doesn’t necessarily mean you should AND great job for your weight loss journey. ❤

Not long ago, I was out and about and had nothing to write on! I found a couple of pieces of printer paper in the car that had old work stuff on one side, folded them into fourths (clean side out) and used those for the next couple of days. Believe it or not, it was fun and freeing to write on those old papers - sort of like making "books" when I was a kid! I transferred the important stuff into my regular notebook, but now I plan to have a couple of folded pieces of paper with me all the time, just for fun.

I’m having a new me 2024, too. I lost 45+ pounds since March. I’m weighing once a week so it could be more. (Scale needs a battery and reset)
Paid off all credit cards except Amazon. That’s next.
Big goals: declutter, track all spending, live simply/minimally, meal plan real food, drink water, sleep, read more, and reduce screen time.
What was the catalyst for your big change?

I completely understand your struggle. I set out the rule for myself that once I start in a planner/bullet journal I have to finish with the book before switching. I have been doing this since 2017, the last time I changed mid way through a planner. It means that even though I have a stalogy waiting to be my next bujo, I am finishing the book I am currently using. No buys are never easy!

YAY You!!! for pausing and really thinking through what you wanted to [re]buy for your Personal rings & realizing that that purchase, even if you used Amazon $$ & decided to _not_ classify it as a "purchase" might not work for you in the end (some issues solved, but still some aspects that you would not be happy with).
I totally get you re hand-drawn calendars. A few years ago, I had a "bujo-esque" Field Notes Brand ® sized planner system. I knew that some months I might get the monthly planner & tracker done in time, but other months I'd get nothing done for a couple of weeks until I got around to making the monthly calendar & tracker. For me, it was easier to make monthly calendars & trackers (make the calendar or tracker in Apple's Numbers spreadsheet program, then copy and paste into a Pages document) and figure out the booklet layout, & print, cut, fold, & sew my own quarterly Field Notes sized booklets than to have to hand-draw calendars and trackers. (That system had the quarterly booklets I made, with a Field Notes Brand notebook for weekly & daily, plus another Field Notes Brand notebook for Notes & Lists. No cover, however.)
I also totally get you re sometimes there is something that, for whatever reason, just irritates about a certain planner, even a planner that you might have enjoyed using previously. And when there is an irritation -- something that just bugs you about a planner or insert, that can make it so that you just don't use your planner, which kinda defeats the purpose !! For me, I had very happily used a Jibun Techo - the A5 slim colorful version - for a year, and re-ordered one for the next year. Well, Jibun Techo did a MAJOR revamp -- changing the fonts used, changing the sizes of the fonts (many things smaller and I've got aging eyes here), changing from English M T W etc to Japanese characters, changing to a slightly heavier paper (but it seemed like the binding machines weren't calibrated for the heavier paper & the sewing was just a hair to tight to allow pages to lay flat the way the previous year's book had). All those changes together made it so that I just didn't enjoy using the Jibun Techo anymore & I found myself not using it. So I wasn't planning. Which meant that I was getting basically nothing done. So, after only a couple of months, I bought a Hobonichi Weeks Mega & very happily used that for the rest of the year (and the next 2 years also)

I really appreciate your candor, it’s hard when a system isn’t working, and I do try to shop my stash. I really thought I was set in my 2024 lineup, and while I am enjoying what I am using, I’ve limited myself in my journaling space, and when you like to write a lot, that makes it hard to stick to. I love all the things! 2024 may be a year where I have my main system and have fun using all the other sizes and setups, as long as I know everything is documented, I’ll be free to try other systems. Mostly I can shop my stash, I’m on a low buy, and it should work well. Maybe! LOL 😂❤. Congrats on the weight loss success, I’m working on mine this year!

I love this set up! If a page format isn’t working, you can fix or replace it using freebies. The pocket notebook being spiral is key for having control, too, because you can tear out pages. The daily for journaling is roomy, while your EDC is light and compact. And your Weeks is still there for when your nostalgia for it returns. I agree with you about the $3 monthly cost; it’s just a subscription that adds up to less money than you spent in the fall getting ready for 2024. It’s much like replacing the pocket notebook when it’s full. Go you!!

I already failed on my low buy no buy. I honestly didn't realize how much planner shopping helps me to avoid my anxiety. Not deal with it but avoid it! I've bought transfer stickers, a new pen, and a new filofax pocket. What's hard for me is when I voice my concerns to my husband he looks at me like I'm being ridiculous for stressing over stationery and tells me to just buy whatever I want....who cares etc😅 he's like my stationery dealer or something. I don't blame him but having a partner that encourages me to buy all the things doesn't help my dopamine addiction. I'm probably coming off like a whining brat but the shopping struggle is real!

  • @LizzieTimewarp
    @LizzieTimewarp Před 7 měsíci +1

I'm the exact same way about a hand-drawn calendar. If I draw it, it's not "real" and I don't trust it. It's because the numbering and my other writing on the calendar is all the same, so it's just words and numbers, but it's not "officially" separated into dates and words lol.

Sam, thank you for your vulnerability in sharing your struggles with this fabulous planner hobby we all love! I too am challenging myself to not spend beyond what I've already spent on, to focus on my system and to also not indulge in consumerism and using spending as a means of "making something better." I think you briefly touched on it...but once I finally realized which size/system I love (personal rings), I found that creating inserts has really addressed my major issue with my own overspending. As much as I loved the adaptability/convenience of rings, I was feeling so boxed in regarding inserts and buying multiple different types because they weren't exactly what I wanted/needed. I thought creating inserts was going to be so much work & avoided it for so long...until I got onto Canva (free version) and watched 2 YT videos on making inserts. I have finally found peace & have cut down on spending! Best of luck on your journey & thank you again for sharing with us!

Hi Sam, I have been watching your videos for years most of the time I’m right with you on all this the frustration of it all but I have an idea for you to contemplate. Why don’t you sit down and construct not put it together or do whatever you want but why don’t you construct a planner that would actually work for you make it design it make your layout do whatever you want laying out the way you would like it and then see where that goes in a size that’s comfortable for you I think that could be quite a project and probably feel very good about yourself when you’re done I don’t know if you’ve tried to do this in the past I’ve never seen one of your videos that you’ve tried that, but design your own what you would like And see where it takes you. What do you think?

I’m back again! I have so many of the same issues that you have on top of which I am recovering from a severe accident and I am now homebound for an extended amount of time in pain and no vehicle to drive. Not my point here my point is don’t let fear get to you like that. Don’t tell anybody that you’re working on this project if you want to do it or decide to do it, so it won’t. You won’t be feeling anybody not even yourself because you can come up with new ideas while you’re doing what you’re doing to make it better for you I plan to hop but I don’t know it’s up through Amazon but I’m terrible and I love to spend, so I would love to see you try because I can relate to you so much and if you can do it, so can I and I’m in a time of my life that I don’t have much of anything going for me except my CZcamsr that I always watch you are one of them, of course But I think you can do it. You definitely have a way of knowing what you want make a list and then come up with an idea on how you can start. Keep me posted. I hope you go through with this at some point don’t let fear do this to you I’ve been living my life for 69 yearsand I have lived in fear for about 59 of those years. Don’t do that. Take a leap of faith for nobody but you I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Sam, I would totally love to try the Pocket Plus but in the end I don't want to spend on a new cover although I love yours. I already have FF Pocket in 3 versions/colors, so I don't NEED a new Planner. Use what you have, right? I still so much enjoy how you organize your pocket planners though, so I'm happy with this video. Over the years you've given me lots of ideas. Sometimes it's fun to go back to the olden days, before all the new jazz. Sometimes when I go through my stash I find some pages of trackers, decoration or something I used to like, and then I try them again in my current planner. I will call this lateral, I move laterally within my stash, but I don't look outward, as in buy new stuff, like you - unless I really need it, meaning my stash did not have it. I DID buy, don't get me wrong, but now I don't buy if at all possible, because once you have a pocket rings cover it's just inserts you need, and the fun is in moving or playing in the sections. Thanks again. Have fun. It's a beauty!

I may still buy it down the line but I definitely don’t NEED it. I have been way too cavalier about buying things lately, and your video has me at least thinking about it. Do I have something that could be used in its place? Maybe…I will be going through some old planners that I did not complete to see if they could be used for that purpose. The idea of use what I have already is definitely something I should be doing. Thank you so much.

I'm struggling this year. My issue is I want to have one planner that has my planning and my journal, and I insist on it being a B6, but I also need something to just scribble down brain dumps and to-do lists so I keep grabbing a second book and then I get upset with myself for having two books again. But if I mix the random notes in with the journal I hate how it looks. For my work planner I've already realized the weekly layout doesn't have enough space for my to-do's (my job changed literally the first week of the year) so I cut the spine off with a guillotine and spliced it together with blank pages from another planner on a coil so that I'll have enough room for what I need to write down. Maybe I need to do the same for the personal planner. Remove the extra pages, just use it as a planner, and get a plain B6 to be a freeform journal and live with the fact that I have 3 separate books. The real problem is I don't need a weekly layout. Maybe I should go back to an A6 daily with a companion monthly?????
