Before Roe v Wade Women Were Prepared To Die Rather Than Give Birth

  • In Part 2 of Abortion: The Body Politic, we step into the past, long before Roe, to trace the roots of today’s abortion’s debate to understand - if abortions have always happened and the majority of Americans have always believed they should be legally accessible - why is abortion such a conentious, even volatile, issue in this country. In this journey, a new narrative of reproductive resistance comes to the surface. Women, particularly Black, brown and indegenous, have always made choices that are best for their bodies, families, and lives - no matter the obstacles men have placed before them. In these stories of resistance we also hear first-hand accounts of surprising allies in underground abortion access, courage in the face of limiited reproductive choices, and a relentless push for bodily autonomy. The illegal period before Roe is a mirror to our impending, post-Roe future. It’s vital that we pay attention.

What these ladies are saying is so true. Roe vs. Wade was being debated by the Supreme Court about the time I returned from working in Sweden. Abortion had been legal in Sweden since just before World War II, so it was not a political issue there. My girlfriend in Sweden was very active in national and international politics. She would politely make me aware of how many ways the US was backward. LOL Upper class and upper middle class girls of my generation generally were able to find an expensive doctor somewhere to carry out a safe medical procedure . . . but it was quite common for middle class and poor girls to die from inept abortion procedures - either from bleeding to death or from bacterial infections.

@@sweetsue4204 are you saying that abortion is a form of contraception? There are multiple ways for a woman to not get pregnant and there's the morning after pill if there's any accidents like a condom ripping etc... You mentioned promiscuity, think about who really benifits from promiscuity & abortions? It's definitely not women! The medical industry are making a fortune (killing/selling/using baby organs), the governments are off the latch to actually help women & children (as are the fathers) & bringing in more taxes by having women working into their 40's & then having to pay for IVF/surrogacy to try have families if they haven't been totally indoctrinated to not have kids at all. Now trans ideologies are mainstream in 'education' which boils down to sterilisation of boys & girls. Women needs to wake up to what is really going on!!

If you want to discuss the options available to you that is YOUR decision. PERIOD End of discussion. Men need to understand that if they are going to have sex with a woman they run the risk of impregnating.that woman. If the woman becomes pregnant the decision is HERS to either have the baby or to terminate the pregnancy. If he doesn'tlike that he should have a vasectomy just as I did when I was 20. I've never regretted my decision as I have ALWAYS known I didn't want to have children.
If the man wants the woman to have the baby he'd better be ready, able, and willing to PAY for that child until the child is 21 or if the child is going to college, 25.

She wanted me to have a child or 12 just so SHE could hold a baby in her lap. She said I was selfish because I didn't want to have children. How DARE I not give her grandchildren?! Of course, I decided by the time that I was
12 or 13 that I was going to live my own life and that I was not going to have children just to make someone else happy.
And as I refused to allow the Catholic Church, my mother, or anyone else bully or guilt me into having children I don't believe either you or I have the right to put those demands on anyone else. Who are you to tell a woman that she has got to have a child that she doesn't want to have just because YOU think she should have the child? And just HOW does any other woman's decision to have an abortion affect your life? Really?! Explain to me how my decision to have a vasectomy or another woman's decision to have an abortion affects YOU?

But I will also stand beside any woman on earth and fight for HER right to not bring and unwanted child into the world. How many of those children have you adopted? How many do you want? Let's post a big-ass billboard outside your front porch asking unwed mothers or wedded pregnant women to drop their unwanted babies off on your front door step...no questions asked.
As for the church....I wonder how many nuns through the centuries have given birth to unwanted babies. Where should THEY drop off their unwanted babies? Your house? Be my guest.
Look...I knew from the time I was in diapers that I was an unwanted child. My "father" never wanted children. My mother wanted a dozen. She ( they ) had FIVE and our lives were miserable. I grew up in a hell house the son of an abusive alcoholic and a narcissistic mother. Neither of them should have ever had children. There were FIVE unwanted children under one roof...and totally screwed up as a result. My older sister is psychotic and sticks her head in her ( electric ) oven just to communicate with our grandparents who have been dead for more than 50 years. I had to take care of my older brother who was psychotic and had been abused all of his life.
There is NO WAY IN HELL that I was going to give an innocent child my "father's" sur name. He didn't deserve it. He did his damnedest to kill my younger sister and me when we were toddlers. So don't talk to ME about unwanted children lady. I have written the damned book on being an unwanted child! I've also paid for a few homes and Mercedes Benzes for psychologists to learn to live and cope with being an UNWANTED child. AS AN UNWANTED CHILD I used to PRAY to your God that somebody...anybody...would come along and adopt me to rescue me from HELL HOUSE. Your god never saw fit to relieve me of two unwanted parents.

As for the Catholic Church, they are the worst hypocrites I have ever seen. I have heard of the Tuam Home for unwed mothers and their babies which was operated by the Bon Secours nuns from 1925-1961 in County Galway, Ireland. After the home closed for good, hundreds of bodies of babies and toddlers were found in the home's Victorian-era septic tank. They had been murdered by the nuns, from neglect and abuse. I've heard of convents that were torn down, and babies' skeletons were found in the walls.

My post seems to have triggered a lot of PTSD in you, which was NOT my intention. I'm truly sorry you and your siblings had to go through all that.
      You're not alone, sweetie.
As for me, even though my mom kept telling me I was a wanted child, sometimes I had my doubts, too. My dad would spank the s**t out of me for things I never did until I was 16, my little sister physically and emotionally abused me (she whopped me across the mouth with a bike chain trying to knock out my newly straightened teeth after 5 years of treatment), and my parents never believed me when I told them. Most of my classmates tormented me for wearing glasses, braces, and being very shy, which they thought I was being "stuck-up". I've had stones thrown at me, been called the B-word by both boys and girls, was spit on a few times, and verbally & physically assaulted (fought back, though, and was put in detention for defending myself), and was humiliated for nothing in front of the class by a couple of teachers through the years.
I am seeing a psychologist too. I am taking antidepressants, Valium, and sleeping tablets to keep me at operating levels.
Believe me, there are plenty of times I wished I had never been born, even to the present day.

I think the only reason I have lived as long as I have is because of my anger and that I decided years ago that I was not going to give the bastards the satisfaction of seeing me lose.
Some people try to paint those of us who are pro choice as cold and uncaring. In fact my heart breaks for women who find it necessary to have an abortion. As a man I readily admit that I can't imagine what a woman experiences when she decides that she has got to make that choice. But I also know that the last thing any woman needs is for anyone to criticize her for making such a personal choice. Yet some hateful people seem to feel the need to judge and victimize others who have to make these choices.
I agree with you about the hypocrisy of the church. They are so concerned about the sanctity of life... yet more people have been killed in religious wars than any other cause of death through out history. Women do not create babies all by them selves. The creation of a child requires the man to fertilize the egg of the woman with his seed. A woman can only create a single child (twins, triplets ……sextuplets not-withstanding) once every nine months. A man could conceivably 😉 create as many as nine babies in a single day. Just think of it! That’s one heck of a lot of babies. A woman cannot run away from the creation. She has to carry it around with her for nine whole months and eighteen years. She must wear the scarlet letter. Consider how that might affect her desire to go to college and figure out how to save the planet for ALL living creatures. Men can just walk away, oblivious to their obligations and even to whether or not they are leaving in their wake, hungry mouths to feed. , Momma must feed those mouths, a.k.a. work to afford food, while Poppa’s out in the world, pursuing his dreams and living his best life. Leaving a trail of tears.

how many times have you had unprotected sex? C'mon John...you're acting like immaculate conception was at work. Unwanted pregnancies will stop when MEN's bodies are invaded - how about this - any woman can make a man submit DNA to prove paternity. IF its his child he is automatically taxed for life to support that child, if he's a loser, then go after his parents and siblings. If that doesn't work - castrate him. What are your thoughts on that John?

@@johngalardi A fetus is not a baby, any more than an acorn is an oak tree. A fetus is a POTENTIAL baby; given the right environment, a precise set of biological circumstances, and time, it will eventually become a baby. Somone who choses to have an abortion and not create and bring a child into the world that they are not willing or prepared to support IS being responsible.
