  • If you are enjoying these videos PLEASE consider supporting this channel! Thank you! :-) In this video I prepare selenium dioxide from pellets of elemental selenium. The final product is sublimated in order to purify it. Selenium dioxide is a precursor to many other selenium compounds and it is also a reagent in organic synthesis (Riley oxidations).

    Please consider supporting this channel. Chems are really expensive. Even a little bit helps a lot. Links are in the description. Thank you! 🙂

      will do, can you turn the Selenium Dioxide in to sodium selenate? Id love to see that

    • @PoorMansChemist
      @PoorMansChemist  Před rokem

      @@jimimased1894 Sure. You dissolve it in a sodium hydroxide solution. 1:1 molar ratio of SeO2 and OH-. It's not the most stable thing in the world. Selenate is more stable.

      @@jimimased1894 PS It's kind of too simple to be video worthy. After making exotic cyanides and tballium complexes just make sodium selenite seems a bit lame. Maybe if I could find something something cool to do with it so I could bundle the selenite prep into making something else it could work.

    People smoke selenium-dioxide crystals thinking it's meth. The string dope method, but maybe people are selling selenium dioxide as meff. I hear it is very similar to meff but much better. I wonder how much til they reach the toxicity level?
    Anyway, a great video!
    Subbed and thank you.
    Where could a person get a hold of selenium dioxide? I guess it would be liquid form, then would need to be recrystallized.
    Great video !
    Thank you & i have subbed.

      Also, it only has a shelf life of 5-7 days. Is there a way to reactivate it?

    11:28 the best part of this video. Except that its only in 360p quality, I absolutely love it. Gonna try myself making some SeO2 since I wanted to try some cold bluing of steel, but this shit is fucking expensive or nearly impossible to get where I live due to lack of suppliers (the oxide).

      You can buy selenium on eBay. It's not that expensive to get 10 grams or so. Then just repeat the process you saw here. If that isn't possible there are a number of other ways to convert Elemental selenium to the dioxide.

      @@PoorMansChemist I was talking about the oxide being inaccessible here. I found 100g of 99.9% selenium for about 40 dollars converted from my currency. Anyways thanks for the reply.

      Nope. Dissolving Se in HNO3 is pretty easy and straightforward. The only thing I've ever noticed are sleep disturbances for a couple days afterwards. No clue what that is all about. 🤷‍♂️
