  • Here is my bmw s38 starter motor which I have restored over the last couple months. The restoration preject went well with very few hiccups. I had to replace the solenoid due to damage but luckily found a genuine item very cheap! I also ordered new bushes, mounting screws and repair kit from bmw cotswold which helped bring the starter back up to standard.
    Steps include:
    Strip down
    Arrange hardware
    Degrease/clean components
    Zinc plate process
    Mask and spray
    Reassembly
Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments

Great job! The interesting is where goes all three electric contacts of starter, be exact, two of them - except central plus. What for are they and where are going to? EBU?

Very cool. I think I need to do this, mine makes a terrible buzz/groan after disengaging from the flywheel, I assume the bushes are worn.

I’d say that’s a start yes! Luckily the starter motor components are easy to get hold of through bmw dealers! May be best to buy a spare and restore that one ready to go on!

The car is off the road at the moment so time isn't an issue. Seems to operate well, just the annoying sound. Something else to add to the list!

Stuck starter solenoid? Its located at the rear of the engine block, RHS if looking into engine bay from the front of the car. Will be underneath intake manifold, but should still be able to see it and do what you need to do!
