What's up with the censored comics during the unboxing?
I forget what issues they started doing it, but at some point Wizard would have "hidden" messages and geeky jokes/ references in the copyright area of the "Letter from the publisher"s page. It was fun finding them as a kid. Enjoying these videos so much. A great stroll down memory lane.
Murphy they put those joke things all over the magazine, especially in copyright text. I always thought that shit was hilarious and sm glad others were aware of it to
Hey have you considered doing a commentary on your Grand design book? Show all the references and all that.
I was wondering when the Midnight sons would pop up. I got into comics at around age 13 in 1993, and loved all of the midnight sons. The Nightstalkers (Frank Drake, Hannibal King, and Blade) were old characters from Tomb of Dracula. King was my favorite as he reminded me of Alucard from Castlevania 3… partly vampire and partly human. Really crushed me as a young fan when those books all stopped.
Oh man, what's with the censored comics at the beginning? Now I want to know about those!
Maybe they're porn.
Love the idea of reviewing 1986 the entire year.
Just recently found this series and loving it so far. Noticed that there aren't any extra links for this episode. Just wanted to say if you guys are thinking of not doing that anymore to reconsider. Love getting more insight and eyes on more comic related videos.
There will be more links in the future. This issue was pretty succinct and didn't lend for extras that we could think of.
Love Lone Star Comics/mycomicshop.com and I agree they always do a great job packing. Wizard issue 6 was my first that I bought off the shelf.
Thank you for this. Takes me back to the day I picked this up and the fun of reading/collecting...
Great episode but damn that censor beep is loud AF!!
Todd McFarlane & Mike Mignola were my favorite artists as a kid!
So glad I found this show. Combines so many of my loves - Comics, Wrestling, Wizard. Plus, you two are from my hood! Western PA represent!
The Mantlo Hulk issue about abuse is notable BC it's drawn by Mike Mignola and a crossover with Alpha Flight. Around the same time Byrne is leaving Marvel. Worth looking up, the crossover is reprinted in tpb as Hulk:crossroads.
For white pens I think this is my favorite, Uni Ball Signo Um-153 Gel Impact Pen. It's a fine line and writes on almost anything, but it takes a few minutes to dry.
Just awesome stuff gentlemen - keep them coming!!
Keith is still the man - I am totally loving the new Batman/Maxx series as well - truly one of the few artists that I will buy a piece of dog shit if he drew it. Such a badass.
I've bought my cat a ton of different cat toys, has no time for any of that shit, but his favourite thing in the world are those MyComicShop packing pads.
I was flipping through some old Wizard Toyfare mags and I noticed that Tom Palmer Jr. is the editor.
Actually, that issue of Fantastic Four #349 did have a Punisher cameo inside the comic on the very last page.
Thanks for that bit on Sam Kieth. I wish he'd do his own stuff (Magic Trout!) rather than the Batman stuff but I'm sure it must be nice to get paid. First two comic pages I ever made was as a letter to Mr. Kieth asking to become his apprentice. Worth a shot.
Looks like someone bought that original art of DeathStorm #2 Jim.
I wonder why they switch from a mail ordered copy of Wizard (no price tag on cover) to a store bought copy (Pittsburgh comic shop Eide's price tag on cover)? Or was it the other way around?
The plot of that unmade Batman 2 movie, has some similarities with the story from Batman Legends of The Dark Night called Faith by Mike W. Barr and fan-favorite Bart Sears, red berets and everything!
There is a single issue of Excalibur written - but sadly not drawn - by Alan Davis where he summarize the story of the Phoenix entity so far, tying knots from Dark Phoenix to Days of Future Past to Jean Grey return and trying to blend some global consistence to that stuff. That may have some sort of very specific and short Grand Design feel. When I first heard of Ed's project, that particular book came to my mind.
I guess that Davis earned the reputation of a writer that can wrap up loose ends, so he had to write the X-Men and "The Twelve Saga", taking elements from years of Claremont and Lobdell time travels and "prophecies" but using current cast. It wasn't that good - being an editorial nightmare I guess - but at least, he got rid of some old unresolved subplots...
I gotta track that down. Do you remember which issue?
@@CartoonistKayfabe Look for Excalibur #52 and its overtly misleading cover.
I remember this being the first Wizard I ever bought.
I wanna hear your thoughts on Hepcats. Also why did you censor those books??
There will be more that 1 Palmer's Picks devoted to Hepcats. We'll get there.
Not only was Uncanny 201 first appearance of Baby Cable, it was guest-inked by Whilce Portacio. Bit of an Image two-for-one there.
Why were they bleeping comics out at the beginning?
I believe the punisher issues regarding the russian conspiracy thing with joe jusko covers is PUNISHER war journal, volume.1, issues 31 through 33- titled: "The komchatkan konspiracy" written by Mike Baron and pencilled by Ron Wagner. I know it because it was my first encounter with the punisher.
Bill Mantlo's Hulk story about Bruce's father abusing him was issue #312. The story was supposedly plagiarised from a Hulk story already in progress by Barry Windsor Smith. Decades in the making, BWS's version of the story has been reworked into a graphic novel calledd Monster which is supposed to be finally coming out soon.
I have never read Hepcats, what's the deal? Is it that bad or are you blaming it for the furries?
Jim’s Yeaah at 20:22
Rip Ed.
Always dug that WORDS WITHOUT PICTURES cover design. Apparently Mark Cox did it.
Found you from a Diversity and Comics recommendation, great nostalgic stuff! Hope you do some deep dives on the black and white explosion from the '80's. Loved the Faust vid and Grips reference. Keep it up lads!
Triceps are a larger muscle mass than the biceps
I hate shiny, glossy stock paper on comics. Give me old newsprint any day..I love the look of old comics and the smell of old newsprint. The way the ink and colors settle in old comics is beautiful. One thing I hate about modern comics..beginning in the 90s was the shiny colors on shiny paper and because of the high gloss...you Fuckin can’t see anything. Haha you have to tilt the comic. But then theirs the horrible artwork, bad anatomy with bad panels.
Wtf is Anti-social Terroress? I can't find any information on it.
