- In time for the holiday season, Jim tells a heartwarming tale about getting the exact thing he wanted for Christmas, but there was a catch! Wizard Magazine issue 5, January 1992 is jam-packed with content. The boys, Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg tackle them all!
Including:
• Who Chris Claremont thought should play Wolverine in the X-Men flick
• Jack Kirby invented the Punisher (no, not "that" Punisher)
• Ron Lim, the cover artist of this issue, talks Silver Surfer and the jobber lifestyle
• An interview with Peter David where he mentions his deep connection to The Little Mermaid
• Peter David is also salty that artists are getting to write their own, giant-selling comics.
• Comic Investor 900 numbers! What scumbags!
• The Simonson's, Walt and Louise, share brains, and accurately predict the future of comics.
• Bet you didn't think you'd hear Raina Telgemeier's name mentioned in a Wizard related podcast.
• Julius Schwartz, the notorious DC editor, was responsible for the notorious HP Lovecraft's preservation outside of the pulps (yes, we know they were both bad human beings)
• Teamsters, Brian Stelfreeze, Denys Cowan's modeling career, Bill Sienkiewicz mullet, and more!

This is my new favorite show. Not CZcams show, not internet show, favorite show. Full stop. Keep up the good work, guys.
baltimore comic con (maybe) 2007-8, i was talking to Adam Hughes when Walt Simonson came up randomly to say hello, and absolutely start-struck I exclaimed "Wowwww, Walt Simonson!". With incredible sweetness and cartoon silliness, he leaned in and said "Would you believe I'm really John Byrne in disguise?!"
Peter David's X-Factor was phenomenal. It remains a highlight of Marvel in the 90s. It was totally a team that shouldn't work, but he made it, proving that old adage about there are no bad characters. And tagging with Larry Stroman was genius.
I liked Ron Lim's art when I was a kid. I grew up reading comics from the 70s and 80s, so I felt like his style was a blend of the way Marvel and DC looked back then, combined with some of that early 90s flashiness. He clearly could crank out books, and I can see why he got so much work. I had a poster drawn by him of a few dozen Marvel characters. It's now on my son's wall.
Upstart was the name of Chaykin/Miller/Simonson's studio in NYC, I think Jim Starlin was there as well.
Man, I was riding that whole wave with you two durinf the Ron Lim segment. I even thought, "John Buscema was a journeyman type artist" right when you mentioned him. Great stuff, seriously. Love the wrestling ranking-analogies too. It's fun to play along
Can’t get enough of these!! Keep em going!!
I still want to hear about Ed's best Christmas
Love this. I'm gunna deep dive!!!
Rob Liefeld is legally obligated to wear denim. That sci-fi heroes article is pretty awesome!
Great point about the stores closing, Ed!
Always awesome! Loved this episode!
You're guys' channel is great! Love everything you guys have been putting out.
I'm all about collecting the early issues of an artist especially an artist like Frank Miller whose art looked great in the beginning and has wonderfully evolved over time. I loved Angel Medina's art at Marvel and on Spawn. Awesome episode, guys!
I got into wizard and image when I was in middle school. At plum .PA. and that Pittsburgh show I saw in wizard one day I lost it. I had to go. Pgood old days
"Cutting a promo" has entered into my parlance where "subtweet" and "talk shit" used to be.
Damn Jim, thats ****** up what happened to you on christmas . lol
those early speed racer comics are amazing! some of the best Manga ive ever read, which beautiful golden age looking art.
And Katherine Bigelow directing an X-Men movie? Crazy good! Point Break is one of my favorites.
Yeah. Jim Rugg's a big Point Break fan.
@@CartoonistKayfabe Don't sleep on her directorial debut, Near Dark, starring Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jenette Goldstein - basically the Aliens cast doing a vampire movie. It's worth watching just for the bar scene. Personally, I liked it much better than Lost Boys, the other vampire flick that came out around the same time.
Also, quick fun fact, Near Dark was the partial inspiration for Preacher. @@anthonyr5762
Bob Hoskins as Wolverine would've been badass...I gotta admit.
i just realized the first couple times you said James Cameron, I was totally thinking KIRK Cameron. and i was picturing people begging for Kirk Cameron to star AS Spider-man. ha. he would have been 21 in 1992.. not totally unrealistic. ha.
Brian Stelfreeze did Aliens vs Predator, and Predator Cold War in 1991. He also did some Marvel Tales, Marvel Comics Presents, and several covers for various Bat books.
Great episode, thanks Ed and Jim!
Really appreciate the breakdown of workflow for artists (like you were talking about in how quickly Ron Lim (or Lin in that ad that you guys skipped) could pencil the Silver Surfer)- never really understood that before now.
One question- I was a pretty big reader of Previews until around the time Wizard came out, then I gave it up for Wizard. Could the changes they were making for '92 be related to the fact that Wizard was giving them some competition?
Walt Simonson was no longer teaching at SVA when I was a student there (2003-2007). I believe he has recently retired at that point.
Holy shit I had that Bigfoot. I was obsessed with Bigfoot.
