  • Due to single-sided deafness (SSD) in her left ear as a result of Meniere’s disease, audiologist Helen was missing out on parts of conversations and feeling isolated-until she got a cochlear implant. She had tried many other hearing solutions before she got her MED-EL cochlear implant, but none of them helped. She struggled with background noise in the car and in noisy places like restaurants, and she felt unsafe riding her bicycle.
But with her MED-EL cochlear implant, she can do the things she loves again. Her CI even silenced her tinnitus. Helen’s RONDO 3 audio processor is easy to charge and can be hidden under her hair-she sometimes even forgets she’s wearing it. The left side of her world is alive again, and she feels more connected to people.

Hi Helen, Thanks for sharing your story.
I have SSD too. You said you tried lots of other hearing devices; so assume it was some time before your got the CI and stimulation to hearing nerves on your left side. How long was it from hearing loss to simulation by CI? Also, as an audiologist, how long would you guess would be "too long" for CI to be a practical and effective solution for SSD? Thanks.

Andy, thank you for your great questions. Helen had a hearing loss for 20 years before getting her cochlear implant. Helen is very happy to discuss cochlear implantation and duration of deafness with you in more detail and answer any other questions. Please email her at hearinghelp@medel.com.au, and she will reply promptly.
      Kind regards.
