PetSafe Gentle Leader review with Hudson the German Shepherd

  • Stop your dog from leash pulling instantly with this inexpensive head collar. We needed a quick fix to our German Shepherd's pulling as it was becoming dangerous for our children to walk him. My trainer recommended a Gentle Leader and we couldn't be happier with the results. Hudson (our 9 month old GSD) went from extreme puller to calm walker instantly! He's a completely different dog when he's wearing this head collar!
Our goal is to eventually train Hudson to walk with us off leash, but this head collar fulfills an immediate need.

Dont use these collars when its hot dogs need to open there mouths to cool off because they dont have sweat glands.

@@John-Anderson it's not a muzzle and the dog's mouth is able to open. The dog can eat, drink and pant. Do some quick research before spreading misinformation. If it's too hot an owner should not be taking their dog out anyway.

Remember to/remind the kids to RELEASE the tension on the leash when Hudson is doing what you want him to do to prevent confusion!! This is awesome, Imso glad it worked for you guys. The gentle leader is a life saver at the shelter I work at.

Saw that immediately. That’s my biggest pet peeve about the head collars, there isn’t an immediate (or any release since this dog hates the muzzle loop, because that’s still pressure) release. It’s so easy for them to end up being a crutch because the dogs confused and the owner doesn’t learn good pressure and release and timing. I think the dog might have been best off with the high collar without the loop on the muzzle.

You can also have a separate harness on along with this harness if they are not pulling, then keep both leashes lose. If the start to pull, keep the leash on the no pull training harness shorter until they stop pulling. As they pull less and less you can take the training harness off and just keep it with you until they are not pulling anymore.

We have a Labradoodle and walking him was a true nightmare. I used to get so sad when I would see dogs walking nicely with their owners. A couple of days ago my husband was trying to walk him and a gentleman saw him struggling with Bear and told him about the gentle leader. The next day I went and bought it. You have no idea, I almost cried at the difference between his other leash and collar. It makes a huge difference on his walks . It has only been two days, but we actually look forward to walking him.

Some dogs are just out front dogs that pull like crazy and a gentle leader is a great way to get control of your leash reactive dog! When your dogs, like most dogs, try to get the gentle leader off you just pull the leader straight up and when your dog eases tension you ease tension and treat!

Worked like magic for our 8 month lab. I didn’t do the slow and steady introduce method. But did feed him treats once it was on to help distract him a little. He’s not completely used to it (paws at it a bit) but he’s walking right at my side and better yet not trying to eat everything on the ground.

@@offperkz2454 tell the kids they have to start contributing. I have 5 as well. It isn't fair for you to have to do EVERYTHING. The older ones can help with their own laundry, having a dish night where they have to do dishes, help you make dinner, etc. The younger ones can put away silverware and plastic dishes, sweep/swiffer (even if they don't do a good job its better than nothing). Hold a family council where you tell the kids you need help. Ask them what they are willing to do. Your family shouldn't have to live in a messy house with a drudge for a mother---if everyone has 1-3 chores that they do regularly it makes a HUGE positive difference in a parent's ability to run a smooth household.

Thank you! I have a 70 lbs golden retriever, he is a huge puller on his harness. At this point he can pull me and I might break something, so I have been really considering buying him something because I can’t seem to stop him comfortably anymore. Since covid, I have lost my arm strength and I can’t restrain him very much. Now, I have a 11 month old collie, and so now it’s like 120 lbs pulling against me, I can manage to stop them still, by the grace of God. However, yesterday I took them to the park and they pulled me and I snapped forward very hard. I met someone at the park with a gentle head harness, and I’m really considering this product. In the past, I wouldn’t have because I was afraid it would hurt him, but now he’s hurting me. Thank you for your wonderful video! It will definitely help.

Yes, they are very effective. My young German pointer was a holy terror on the lead. This has cured him. I have found that the best method is to associate it with fun. He wears it when we go to the park to play with his ball, and keeps it on whilst doing this. It is slack enough to let him open his mouth completely and carry his ball. The first couple of times he really didn’t like it. However, when he reacted, I just stopped walking and calmed him down. He soon got the idea that wearing it meant going out for fun.

Thank you for being so honest I try to tell people all the time that training your dog with treats only works as long as you’ve got a pocket full of treats. As soon as you don’t have the treats, they’re not interested, they work it out really quickly teaches the dog to be selfish. He teaches the dog to mooch of other people - it teaches the dog to look for food while you’re out, which creates more pooling - and it also makes them susceptible to taking Bates - - thank you for your honesty.

I have a shepherd mix and he has a huge prey drive so if he was seeing anything, it was like hell to regain control over him. Even though he is very small for a German Shepherd, he is mixed with very strong dogs. I do train him and he's a very smart and passionate-about-learning dog. I'd been saving up my money and I purchased him one of these collars last month. It worked like magic. He still occasionally pulls, but it's not as hard to stop him anymore. This made our walks even more enjoyable and fun.

I used a Halti collar like that years ago for my beagle. I'm sorry you're having trouble, but glad it's doing as intended. I have a small dog and they don't make them small enough for her. You'd think it would be easy enough to train her, but after 8 years I've finally found a treat that interests her enough that she will not only eat it outside but be enticed by it. She responds well to verbal commands but outside it's just too exciting.

I like the honesty in this video about the dog never really liking the head halter - we went through all the positive training for over a year with an entrenched 60-lb puller that came to us as an adult (not a puller, more like a surprise lunger strong enough to yank me off my feet and drag me across a parking lot).
The result is that 90% of the time, the dog resists distractions and walks nicely, BUT, that 10% of bad behaviour results in injury and reinforced lunging (my hand is wrapped and mangled as I write this from the most recent impromptu "ride").
I've gone back to keeping the head halter on during all walks save for her unleashed morning training walk (in a low-distraction setting), and walking and training has become a pleasure again.
As for the honesty - like your dog, my dog does not like the head halter. She resists it, but after a few minutes of "buffing" (ie circling her, rewarding her for not pulling with the head halter on, etc.) she relaxes into it. I would say for anyone with a strong puller, try this tool. It works, it doesn't harm the animal if properly used and, best of all, it will save your dog from building bad habits.

Yhhhh I didn't work for my rottweiler, I'm a 6ft guy that can lift 2.1 times body body weight in deadlift and he drags me with the head collar like I'm not there and if the surface is anything other than perfect in terms of traction I get taken off my feet 😭

Yes it works I can attest to it. I adopted an 18 lb 4 year old terror oops I meant terrior. I put this on him and he walks like a gentleman without it he’s impossible to walk. He still pulls tantrums and lays down in the middle of the sidewalk from time to time but it’s still better than being pulled and not feeling in control on the walk. I’ve been using it for 2 weeks and little by little he’s getting the hang of it.

My dog did the same thing when she was 7-8 months until couldn’t walk her anymore cos she’s getting stronger and strongest everyday. Now she’s 15 months and I am still having problem of walking her. Your video gives me the idea to try this gentle lead. Thank you so much 😊🙏🏻 Hope will work on us 🙏🏻

Yep our german shepherd pulls so badly on our walks and our trainer started us off with walking him on a harness - probably not the best decision because it gave him the pulling advantage - he's a year old now and taking him for walks is something I dread so I've ordered this, and it will be arriving tomorrow. I really hope this works because I fear taking our GSD out for a walk unless my brother is with me and he's holding him. I used to take him out all the time when he was younger. We'd trek the woods for hours and I miss those walks.

I just got this.... dog hates it. But it does work somewhat. She still pulls but it's within bounds. At first she got the collar off. Didin't see what happened. Second time I made sure that it was fully connected. I tried to pull it apart but couldn't. Decided that I needed a backup. Did that. I think there is hope .....

As someone who has grown up with big dogs who were trained on gentle leaders and then getting my dog in adulthood and not prioritizing using one, man I have noticed the difference. I will take a gentle leader over me getting dragged by dog when he tries to go after a deer on our runs. Especially fun when it happens mid stride and you have to quickly align yourself to the grass vs the cement sidewalk to get dragged on.

My dog does not mind the collar and it helps some but if he really wanted to take off, he could. Also mine has plastic clips which isn't that good I'm going to have to look at some other ones. We've been using it for about a month with little success. He's 126 lb Dogo Argentino.. his sister responded to it right away and I hardly even have to hold her leash anymore but he is a beasty curious kid. It's definitely making walking with him less pleasurable 😩

If your dog is getting angry at the gentle leader I recommend what I did with my little monster and give treats every time he put his mouth in the collar, and slower you will be able to make him go all the way under the collar, keep him using at home(and again, lots of treats) to get used to and soon he will totally forget about it! Cool video!

This is a nice and honest review I appreciate it. I did notice I few things that need to be adjusted in your technique and approch. For example in the gentle leader video, they say to put the treat through the nose loop and then slide it on your dog’s nose... you kind of did the opposite. Also, when walking the dog and he is by your side there should be no tension in the leash at all, it should be hanging loose. You only apply tension when he is pulling or redirected his attention else where.... tension = not what I want you to do, come back here. No tension = good job, this is what I want you to do. One of your sons has the dog walking beside him but he pulls the leash to him on the side... it should hang loose. Check Mccann video on head collar training! 😉 other than that, thank you for the honest review.

I know exactly what you are talking about .l I use this on my German shepherd dog, same issue. She allows me to put it on, she still pulls a little and tries to take it off. But I can't deny I have better control of her with this lead. I have tried prong collar, e collar, harness, chain, you name it, and she still pulls. I guess she is such an alpha dog. Forgot to mention ,she also had a trainer ,but that's just how she is.
