- According to the owner, his 2007 Honda Ridgeline ran over a cardboard box, and then the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, right?

it's the old "my cardboard box ate my fuse" story. great job, keep up the good work.
This is a guess...someone wired the aux lights to that circuit so when the wires shorted it blew the fuse. The other repair shop found the fuse blown and the short was still there and they used a wire diagram trying to find the short but seeing as it was aftermarket wiring they couldn't locate it so they left the fuse out. You found the short & repaired it and then had to solve the missing fuse lack of power. That's @40 years of fixing issues and trying to figure out what was the sequence of events but then again that's just a guess but that's my story & I'm sticking to it...:-) Good diagnosis Ivan and another PHAD happy customer!

He took it out to replace the one that blew when his front lights shorted out. He probably read the diagram wrong and thought it was for something else seeing how thats when the problem happened thats a logical reason for the missing fuse.
I think you did a great job !!, you found out no voltage at that pin was causing the problem, and you eventually figured out why there was no voltage at that pin, it's not easy to stay focused especially when you are tired, but you kept your composure and succeeded.
Owner pulled that fuse to replace blown fuse from half ass wiring job on those aftermarket lights.

So long story short, they blew a fuse, stole one from another slot that they shouldn’t have. Didn’t tell you about it, and then lead you up the garden path for most of a day. Lol, I’m glad you found it and glad you charge by the hour given you need a new screen.
This is exactly why I try to avoid running stuff over at (almost) all costs. I even got stopped for it once.
Late September '99 I noticed something which looked like a bit of 2 by 4 lumber in the road on an interchange and decided to avoid it, even though that meant doing sort-of a Scandinavian flick and, most likely, ending up in a lift-off oversteer situation. At the time I wasn't fully aware of how bad the handling of my current car is on the limit, so the slide was quite lurid, but I did manage to keep it out of the barriers and continued without stalling. Only to be flagged down by a motorcycle cop a couple of kilometres down the road (this is when I found out there's people monitoring cameras all over our road network). So I explained it turned out be just s bit of foam, but it looked like something which could have really damaged my car if I ran it over and, since there was no-one around, I decided to avoid it. Fortunately, that took the sting out of the conversation and everything ended amicably.
Anyway, good job tracing things down to a single point of failure, too bad someone got to the vehicle before you and introduced a red herring of sorts.
Hummm there's way more here than meets the eye. The owner didn't give you the correct info... Running over a cardboard box is not going to cause a fuse to suddenly vanish in thin air. And there is no way the car (not a truck as stated before, LOL) could've run fine before, since it didn't have that fuse. I would've been upset with the owner for misleading the diagnosis. Unless somebody else was using the vehicle and lied to the customer as well. A great case study with a bizarre story behind it. Way to go Mr holmes.

I know, I know, Actually that's something I admire about auto technicians... I couldn't keep a happy face for too long LOL.
The truck in fact DID go to one shop before I looked at it. My only guess is that they for one reason or another pulled that fuse out and did not reinstall it? Fuses don't fall out of the fuse box on their own...usually lol. I wish I found the CORRECT diagram sooner, diag would have gone much smoother lol

Unsolved mysteries...... It makes you wonder how is it possible? I have had my share of missing fuse some that make no sense. The obvious ones are the 02-04 F150 for missing fuse and have o2 and transmission codes. You are a brave man going to individuals houses. Brought back memories when I started my business. Great job brother.

Over the years i have dealt with missing fuses a few times. It's funny how they just vanish. Even though you had a rough time of it and a broken laptop you solved the problem and that is what's important. Get some R+R my friend.

The cardboard box was protecting the fuse, that protected the transmission, that protected the charging system, that protected the vehicle, that protected the operator, that protected the computer, ( not the laptop though ) that tried to protect itself from Ivan.
Love this video because it teaches you how to think. Ran around in circles on my gm 3.8 after a misfire. Replaced the ICM and fixed the problem. Misfire came back and never thought the new module would fail so quickly( 2 weeks). Needless to say that cost me alot of time

Have a 2012 Honda Pilot. Similar drivetrain. Had an over voltage issue with the charging system. Fried the alternator and the plug on the back. Had several DTC’s to include a transmission solenoid low voltage. New battery, alternator, and plug. Fixed over voltage but then wasn’t charging. Transmission shift issues. Found your video and decided to check all the fuses. Wouldn’t you know it fuse #4 under the dash for the ACG was blown. Replaced it and system charging and no more DTCs. Drives normally again. Thanks for the video.

Here's the reason it took awhile. You didn't bring the dry erase board , and relied to heavily on the scopes and scopes on a rope, instead of drawing out that fuse. Then you quickly would have discovered that without a head on that fuse end and no vacuum, it simply came out on it's own. More study on Eric's drawings would have led you there much sooner. And remember if he can draw it, you can too... In all seriousness though thanks for another great video !

On the Fords built back in 90's you could pull the fuse to the speedometer/odometer & drive the vehicle without mileage being put on the odometer. It took Ford a while to figure out that some people that were leasing Ford's were doing this to avoid going over their lease mileage. Ford fixed this in late 90's early 2000's so if you pulled the speedometer fuse the alternator wouldn't charge your battery. My wife's cousin found this out the hard way when he pulled the speedometer fuse on his Ranger & his motor died on him on the freeway while driving up to his parents cabin at night. :)

I was a home products service technician for 27 years. Beware of the 10 thumbed do it yourself customer. #1 they forget what they did. #2 they lie to you when the truth would do. Nobody loves the repairman. He stole that fuse to replace the fog light one that blew! Then he stood there and watched you pull your hair out for how many hours? without a clue to what he had CAUSED! If I didn't love dealing with people I couldn't have done it.
Don't sweat it dude you figured it out. I was just down a similar Road this week working on a no Speedo issue on a bus, I came in on the tail end of this job and after I verified wiring again on it and asked the other Techs what had been done, things were not adding up. I took a deep breath and started from scratch,lol. I found a bad Battery and one battery wasn't even hooked up then after that found the Alternator was putting out excessive ac ripple. It was interfering with the Trans output shaft sensor and thus giving a faulty signal to the Trans computer and thus the Trans was spitting out a screwed up digital signal of it, thus no Speedo. I was relieved when I finally nailed the issue. Know what it's like to get your butt handed to you,lol.

Thanks for posting the video. It shows that we all make mistakes. I changed plugs and wired on a 92 Oldsmobile 3.1 v6 for a friend. Took me and hour why the rear plugs would not come out. I was tightening them. Basic lefty loosy righty tighty mistake. I was tired and frustrated when I started the job so i just lost my mind.
Reclined my leather chair into laptop, breaking screen. $42 and two days later the replacement showed up at home. Half hour installation. One, two, barbecue (to coin a phrase). Easy.
I got chills. (I'm weird that way). I like Keith's comment below, that's pretty funny. Oh no, sorry about the note book. Holly crap (fix).
I had a flat tire, took the car in to have it fixed, Driving home tried to use the cruise, no cruise. checked the under dash fuse panel and what do you know, no fuse in the panel. I used the cruise to go to the shop so they had to have removed it thinking I would return for a diag. and repair. they lost a lot of family business over that one.

Ran over a box and got sparks. Now everything is crazy. First thing would be to do a visual for broken wires, then check fuses.
There looks to be a wire tap by that fuse box with a RED fuse in it. My guess is its for the "fog lights" that popped a fuse. The owner prob took a fuse from the fuse box since there are so many of them. = mess!

In my Hvac apprentice class (that I teach) i say "O.K. guys check power first! 3 phase power back feeds through motors when 1 fuse blows so check fuses first.
It has happened to me more than once (in the dark with it raining !).
Nice video. It's funny how it's relatively rare you can blame a Honda for being poorly designed. If this was a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram I would have suspected some critical wiring harness in harms way or needing a new $1000 TIPM. But, being a Honda, it was just "owner error." You might look for a "for parts only" same series laptop on eBay if you're comfortable replacing the entire lid/screen assembly.
the domestic vehicles may fail ALOT but at least the parts are usually available withing a day because thereare so many ford/dodge/gm dealers also parts stores stock it all whereas when you Honda fails the parts are a week away in edmonton
A lot of laptop screens run around $80 and not hard to replace . Spudgers may help . I get a lot of them from dvd super one off ebay . I take the screen out and get the number off the back , and then look for screen .

Yes, it is always a different ballgame when the owner is standing there trying to be helpful. I've had times when as soon as the audience leaves, I find the problem right away lol

don't feel bad broke to screens replace 1 couple months before. 2 new screens came in last week. Got both Asus pads working went to glue them in and broke both. Now I paid for 3 Asus pads twice to repair them

Over on Rainman Rays sight he ran into the same problem. He traced the problem just like you did to a missing fuse. The conclusion was that the previous shop did it intentionally to scam the customer.

well when things do not go our way.... it makes for a long day. fuses don't just fall out. i would be looking at how many amps the fog light fuse took, many owners know how to check fuses. maybe by chance he seen this "missing fuse" was the same size. unsure if i would have attempted to use the test light when you did. however you found what appears to be the root cause of the condition. as always a great job and a great vid

This sort of reminds me of Super Mario; the guy breaks blocks with his fists, eats flowers and starts throwing fire from his hands but can't stand touching a turtle.... a cardboard box sends flying fuses through the window on a Honda Ridgeline? This or the guy just wanted to be on camera.

since you reset the codes don't forget the idle relearn procedure. this engine is throttle by wire and its the same engine as my Saturn which I have to do the relearn procedure every time I clear the codes

Missing fuse. Know that feel. I got called in by my uncle to find out why his truck wouldn't start. Spent over an hour tracking it down. Mostly trying to calm him down and dealing with his buddy giving "advice". Turns out an idiot cousin stole both ECM fuses from my uncles truck while he was working on his transmission as a prank. We were NOT amused.
Do yourself a favor and get a matte finish replacement screen for the laptop. Great for cutting down glare. I got one for a laptop I was using outdoors and have never regretted it.

WEStTEXAs I've had an older fella who said that he noticed his wipers, horn, power seats, and retractable roof stopped working all at the same time, started with the horn, found missing fuse, then power seats I found missing fuse, turns out all the fuses were missing, I looked at the fuses around those fuses and found out the were misplaced, he said he checked them all one day to make sure they were good as a preventive maintenance check and then about a month later saw the issues

Could the "where'd the fuse go" be answered by the fuse tap you can see hanging disconnected at 16:23? Perhaps the owner (or someone) tapped that fuse for the aftermarket lights and it was taken out when it shorted as stated in the beginning, and never replaced. ??

That was Bananas! It appears this was kicking you in the butt. First you crack the screen , then waste 2 hours on the wrong diagram. Then you say it was a missing B2 fuse when it clearly shows , that there is no fuse in that slot ! Aye yay yay!! . You did a great job on that fix after all. I was just thinking in the beginning of the repair it's probably just a fuse....but it would not have been exciting if you did not go thru the changes and make a exciting video. Thanks for sharing your frustration with us. Sorry you busted the screen....

hmm strange events here for ya on this one ivan..always check fuses first as one never know no matter what customers says they fixed or checked..

Man. What a shit show. I would have been dropping mad f-bombs and possibly even thrown a tool when I found that missing fuse...
You can probably buy a replacement screen for that laptop but depending on how it comes apart it might well not be worth it. You might want to look at a surface or something if you need windows OS for the Pico and anything else you plug in.

hmm usually when my dad broke his acer laptop, it was on my head.
could I ask, why did you opt for a 20 amp fuse, was this just experience? did you try anything smaller and blow it? would you try with a higher amp fuse, or think 20 is about as high as you'd chance without obviously wanting to damage anything,

Good question, Rick. In this particular case I should have stepped it down to 10A since it's only a feed for the PCM and solenoids. For a higher amp circuit like a fuel pump of fan motor 20A fuse is OK.

Someone borrowed the 15a fuse from the fog light circuit, and didn't replace it.
i'm assuming he pulled the wrong fuse when his light where grounding or touching.

when you applied voltage to pin A6 my 1st thought was check the fuse.
Great point, that was my train of thought too...but check out the wiring diagram!! A6 is actually the CONTROL side for Main Relay 1!! Fuse #18 actually feeds Pin B2 (the other missing power feed), and is NOT shown on the main PCM wiring diagram for some strange reason. But the "bypass test" worked the same on either pin! Must be some circuitry in the PCM that ties those together...

theoldwizard998 I have that same 2in1 it kind of sucks because WiFi driver needs to be reinstalled every time MS updates Windows... Not worth repairing IMO.
If you are shopping for a new laptop, I prefer ones based on AMD A10 chip. Much better graphics performance than any Intel integrated graphics chip. 8Gb memory minimum, 16Gb would be better.
If you can find a nice 2-3 year old machine especially with Win7, I would swap out the HD and install a SSD and a virgin, retail distribution of Windows.
Actually I just bought a new one, identical to the first. The one with
the cracked screen is still useable as a beater shop laptop after
disabling the touch screen. Can't have too many laptops!

Suspecting that fuse blew and didn't get replaced or was pulled and used to replace another blown fuse. Either way story not complete and probably never will be. Again hoping you get off of the outdoor stuff not for the viewers here benefit because the videos are excellent. But for your benefit. Winter is coming on and working out of a car and then in the elements is tough . I love your videos but wish you better.
