@@benlongo904 My most disturbing film I've ever seen was the 1972 rape & revenge horror film "The Last House on the Left." The 2010 Korean action & adventure horror film "I Saw the Devil" was number 2. Then, the most disturbing film would later on be "Martyrs." Then, the most disturbing film would later on be "A Serbian Film" (the cut version which should be saying something, I won't ever watch the uncut version). All 4 of them are great films.

I still think I Spit On Your Grave 2 (assault and torture of the girl) was extremely disturbing to watch and listen to.. that actress was incredible..her screams were so realistic, which for me made it extra hard to stomach.. like I wanted to be sick after... but on another note.. one of the best revenge movies I've ever seen.. I wish all sexual assault victims could have this kind of justice..

a scene similar to the last one you talked about is in the beginning of this movie called malmhaus. it isn’t even a horror movie, it’s a norwegian drama, which I think factors into why it was so disturbing - it caught me completely off guard. the son of the main family is cutting the grass on one of those big mowers you can sit on and he ends up falling out and the mower rips his scalp off. it’s such a good movie but I haven’t been able to watch it again because of how the scene makes me feel. I’m not even squeamish when it comes to gore but something about this scene is so unsettling.

Ok, fair enough about Begotten. I can see how it would get under your skin. Just a matter of taste I guess.
For me, although the mutilation scene did make every muscle in my body go rigid, it was the scene where she rejoins her husband in the living room that got me. I literally had tears pouring down my face. The expression in her eyes, plus the score accompaniment were heartbreaking to me. She loved him and her son so much that she sacrificed herself to please him. I found that very powerful.

I know what you mean about the vomit-gore trilogy. I think I found them disturbing for their annoyance and gross-out factors more than how 'upsetting' they are. Arguably the most upsetting scene out of them is in the 3rd installment, Slow Torture Puke Chamber and if you've seen it, you'll likely know which scene I mean and even that was so obviously fake it was hard to be really upset by it.
The book Salo is based on (de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom) was far more disturbing to me than the movie.

I’ve seen all of these, and for the most part don’t find them particularly disturbing. LHotL is disturbing of course, and this is a decent remake. But it misses one of the most important parts of the original.
Your take on what makes something disturbing is also really interesting. The latter two movies seemed more icky in that regard than disturbing. Also, can i ask why it’s worse that Lynn Shaye is an older woman? Older folks have sex too.

In my opinion, there are three ways in which a film can be disturbing.
The first one is visual violence. That award would go to the japanese film "Audition". The violence here feels so real and director Takashi Miike makes sure that we feel every bit of it.
The second one is by having just an incredibly cruel and nihilistic story that makes you feel like there is no good and no happiness in the world. This is a category, which Lars von Trier has mastered. If I would not have to go for a horror film, I would probably pick "Dancer in the Dark", but in that genre "Antichrist" takes the cake.
The third one is the psychological horror. Films that build such an intense atmosphere which you just can't escape. David Lynch's film "Inland Empire" is my pick here. The "Hallway Phantom" scene is probably the most disturbing one I've ever seen, although I can't really explain why. Which probably makes it even eerier.

lol when you started talking about Dead End. I had to think about it. Then i remembered that scene. one of the few scenes that made me cringe in a movie.

thank goodness I've only seen one of these movies, and I completely agree with you. I saw last house on the left - and yeah, I can't even.

The scene in last house on the left is very difficult and uncomfortable to watch, but I do think it is an important part of the story for the emotional response, it’s meant to make you feel as sorry for her as possible, it’s the point when she’s truly lost everything. Last house on the left is a brilliant film, but now I know about that scene I have to either skip it, or leave the room for a cigarette, or bathroom break. But other than that scene it’s a brilliant film

I am with you with The Last House on The Left. The rape scene got to me also raising three girls I have always been afraid of rape. I love horror movies but that rape scene is brutal.

The most disturbing to was The Human Centipede one and 2, Irreversible (worst rape scene I’ve ever scene) and Martyrs. Although I liked the movie it’s difficult to watch. Eden Lake, Bully and Requiem for a Dream.

Martyrs is one that got me - I was so disturbed and I just felt a lot of sadness for the tortured woman. Also anything with prolonged rape scenes, especially if it's younger people - I can't watch it. I finally watched The Human Centipede after so long and it was actually bearable but I don't think I will watch parts 2 & 3 and I don't want to go anywhere near A Serbian Film.

Antichrist was really disturbing for me. Even without the shockingly graphic parts, it just kind of keeps you in this really uncomfortable mood throughout. Very eerie. If you haven't watched it, you should.
