    About the cold shower question, yes they do reduce your muscle growth since it reduces inflammation which is what your body uses as a signal for the healing of your muscles which is basically causing the exact opposite effect of what you want.(If you’re training to build muscle) If you’re already at the size you wanna be then they (cold showers) and cold plunges are great for recovery.

    Hey ian Ily, im in medical school. The best way to promote muscle growth is by increasing blood flow to the target areas. Typically heat is the best way to increase blood flow, or there are these new mats that u could lay on essentially. They have little needles and they help to increase blood flow to whatever body part u lay on. Ice/cold is usually used for pain and to decrease inflammation, if ur not in crazy pain there is really no reason to take a cold shower, unless if u are trying to do a skin care regiment. On a side note hot water forces ur pores to close, where as cold water opens ur pores, so if u have acne or skin issues and want to wash ur skin….. make sure u always prep the area with cold water to open ur pores so the medicine can get where it needs. If u want to increase ur muscle gains u want to massage the areas u want to grow (helps to increase blood flow), use heat, eat alot, take vitamins to make sure that ur body is working at max (male multi daily vitamons are great) and drink lots of water. I have never heard that cold water decreases muscle growth but, honestly from everything I learned I wouldnt be surprised since heat is the way to go. Hope this helps buddy ly.

    About the icy water thing: When it comes to building muscles, the most important thing is recovery after the exercise. No matter what form of recovery you do, your muscles will get stronger. But depending on the recovery routine used, you can specify wether you’d like to build lean muscle or bulk muscle. There are different forms of recovery, such as overconsumption of protein and calories to cause muscles to grow at maximum speed, growing bulk muscles. Some people do nothing, which gives the muscles a break and a chance to build back stronger, growing both bulk and lean muscle. Or, there is an option to freeze them, like what you asked about, which causes them to exclusively grow lean muscle. That is why you sometimes see athletes taking ice baths, because they’re trying to get stronger without gaining excess weight.
    Just to clarify: “When you compare lean vs bulk, the former contains less fat around the muscle tissue. So, the body looks slimmer and the muscles seem rock-solid. On the other hand, bulk muscles add to the overall body mass, giving you a bigger appearance.” It’s mostly a visual thing unless your training for a specific activity like powerlifting (bulk), or wrestling (lean or bulk depending on weight class)

    Ian the thing about cold showers is true. It is the same as ice baths. It slows down your recovery and tends to stunt muscle growth when taken right after you workout or run. There are many benefits to cold showers and ice baths however. The best time to take them is right after you get up in the morning. Love you Ian❤❤❤

    • @jj7546
      @jj7546 Před rokem

      No that’s pseudo science. Idk where you or bad scientists got this idea but In reality your muscles aren’t stupid and will grow from stress and temporary cold can’t ruin the whole process

  • @236Nahidwin
    @236Nahidwin Před rokem +15

    oh by the way on the cold shower thing
    basically you have to imagine how your body responds to cold showers, the reason theyre so benefitial is because of cortisol released (the hormone that causes the shock when you get into cold water) and basically puts manageable stress on your nervous system to respond, in turn causing bloodvessels to restrict and potentially also get more brown fat (a type of fat tissue that produces heat to keep your body temp up)
    however, when you cold shower after working out, as I mentioned the cold will cause your blood vessels in your extremeties to constrict, flowing all that blood into your core and important organs to keep them warm. As you can imagine the muscles wont have as much blood flow for quite a period of time, making your recovery time somewhat delayed and indeed throws off your gains
    it's not that destructive as working out in any way possible is always the healthier option, but if I had to recommend a shower routine Id advice cold showers in the morning (this also helps with how present and effectively you function throughout the day) and when you work out and you want to shower go for a warm shower so that your blood does the opposite, flow into your extremeties to release that heat and keep your body temp constant (thus also bringing more blood to the muscles to recover)
    I can link a few articles where it's explained or videos if you want me to

    11:20 the cold water will reduce inflammation, you need a certain amount of inflammation to occur for muscles to go through recovery process, so in theory it can inhibit the promotion of recovery, but in your case of running its only beneficial because you will recover fast since you aren't stressing the muscles to the point of muscular failure none of it will apply

  • @zaryol2338
    @zaryol2338 Před rokem +1

    cold showers do stunt the hypertrophy stimulus but this is only if you do them immediately after, iirc 6-8 hours after the workout is fine. A lot of people do them before the workout, especially cold plunges. I can’t remember if the study done was on cold plunges or cold showers tho (cold plunges are much colder).

  • @bmanbdude

    Recent studies regarding cold water exposure seem to favor the opinion of that it can be bad for muscle growth. Although cold showers are likely not going to impact it as much (if at all). But cold ice baths are bad for muscle growth. It's also fine to do any cold water before exercise but not after. I usally take cold shower in the morning and warm after workout.

    Second it's awesome to see you're progression to 200k, I don't think it should be a competition between you and Ryley, you've both inspired and pushed eachother to do your best and get to where you are currently, you should both be proud of eachother and happy for their success
    And lastly, no, cold showers do not stunt or decline muscle growth, I'm pretty sure those rumors were probably started by people who are jealous and can't stand cold showers, my dad is a medical professional, I've often talked to him about this subject, and I've done extensive research over the years, essentially cold showers can wake up your nervous system and stimulate activity in your muscles and inner workings, cold showers are most effective in early mornings before you exercise to wake your body up and get it ready to go to work, and then after you workout taking a slightly warmer shower can help calm down and relax the body to be less strained during the rest of the day, keep in mind, try to keep the cold showers shorter as to not let your body get used to it and start to relax and waste that new energy, the warmer shower is where you should take a bit longer and let your body calm down, I try to keep my cold showers to about 2 minutes tops, 1 if I can, and the warmer one can be as long as you feel you need without emptying your bank account on the water bill, hope that helps!

    After a run, cold showers or ice baths are amazing for your body and key to recovery! For strictly cardio workouts you won't be building much muscle anyway, so the reduction of muscle mass won't be extreme at all. Also good luck on that 10K!!
    EDIT: I just read through some of the comments and it reminded me that it is important to stretch BEFORE you jump into the shower or ice bath. Im not sure about all the science behind it but I know from experience that it'll help reduce Charlie-Horses and you'll be less sore the morning after.

    Cold showers can negatively impact muscle protein synthesis. Taking cold showers causes vasoconstriction and pushes oxygen rich blood away from your muscles and into your vitals for survival. Cold showers have a lot of health benefits but if building muscle is your priority then sticking to showers on the warmer side will be most optimal indeed. To be fair though, jogging and or running itself isn’t necessarily muscle hypertrophy inducing so cold showers aren’t being counterproductive in that sense. If you really want to go anabolic and build lean muscle then I’d recommend starting resistance training with weights, if you are just starting off then you will get major noobie gains and blow up pretty fast.

    Cold showers very useful straight after work out, it helps to relief pain and get more oxygen inside muscle tissue. On the other hand hot shower is super good after some time when you are already warm and rest, it speed up the recover process. I do both and some stretching exercises as well. As a result my recovery after 40k reduced from 1 month to 2 evenings

    about the cold shower question, if you are doing everything else right, like training with progressive overload and eating the right diet, the cold showers should not matter that much or its just a very minor difference. It helps with recovery, so longterm, if you do everything else good and consistently you will still grow. But definitely trying things our for yourself is the most important, everyone's body is different. For example it doesnt work for me because I get sick everytime i take a cold shower.

  • @dom9114

    Cold showers definitely reduce muscle growth coz it kinda slows some progresses of recovery, which means u get less gainz in comparison with no cold shower. But tbh running isn’t really a muscle building activity, more of an endurance one. So choose according to your goal, I personally take like 5 min cold shower in the morning and a normal shower with average temperature after working out.

Another thing though if you are just training for a marathon which is a cardio based event you are probably not going to be able to put any muscle on due to the fact that ur going to be burning a significant amount of calories, And u need to be in a calorie surplus or at-least at maintenance calories in order to put on muscle. On top of all that if your not weight lifting you prolly won’t see any results in your physique. Also the best time to take a cold shower is right in the morning or right before a workout so u can get the recovery aspect and still be able to put on solid muscle. Hope this helped Ian LY ❤

    Hey Ian, don't worry about cold showers after running. As running is mainly an aerobic exercise which taxes your cardiovascular system, it does not induce much muscle growth. Cold showers will not negatively impact your recovery from running sessions. Now if you were training as a bodybuilder for example, cold showers after a workout would inhibit muscle hypertrophy. I personally take a cold shower BEFORE doing heavy lifting (this has been shown to increase performance).
    In short, don't worry about cold showers after running, but if you want to grow significant muscle, don't take a cold shower after your workout. Have a good day Ian.

    I’m not sure if cold showers reduce muscle growth, but I know they speed up your metabolism. Those two can kind of connect though

    its said that cold showers right after a workout reduce muscle growth since ur body is trying to stay warm which increases ur metabolism and burns a bit of calories, so its best to wait a couple hours instead of jumping right in

      ig a better way of putting it is it reduces ur muscle recovery, so if all u did is run before then it should actually benefit your health, especially if it was really hot outside

    Hey Ian, Personal Trainer here. For Endurance athletes a cold shower/bath would be good to help reduce swelling and soreness. BUT there have been many studies constructed that show it is not optimal for muscle growth.
    If you want to focus on muscle growth, after a workout I would suggest using a massage gun, rehydrating with electrolytes (ie potassium + sodium are good choices), stretching out and/or using a foam roller
    In conclusion, studies show that when a subject takes a cold shower/bath after strength training it slightly hinders muscle growth.
    Hope this helps and keep up the training ❤

    As far as I know from college, cold showers and ice baths are good to reduce inflammation. They also reduce blood flow though so less oxygen/proteins etc are brought to your muscles while in recovery. I think that’s more of an ice bath thing though not a cold shower thing so idk. You’d have to ask an expert lol

    Yep cold showers do reduce muscle growth but running doesn't really promote muscle growth anyways so you can still take them if you want to.
