  • Not a single living human asked for this film but I was in the van for an extended period and really started to lose it, so I thought what better way to pass the time than to make a film about the advice I WISH someone had shared with me years ago. Now, I forgot ONE piece of advice I'm going to share in the next film but here are eleven tasty tidbits of introspection that might come in handy if you find yourself aiming your high beams at the professional photographic industry. You might think many of these are damn obvious but you would be amazed at what I've seen and heard.
Now, this might be tough love for the fragile types but that's okay. There is nothing like having a photo editor throw a stapler at your head to bring one up to speed on tough love and the reality that stitches are stitches and tomorrow is another day.
    1. 6:00, stop complaining
    2. 9:44, learn how to politely say "no"
    3. 13:50, work harder
    4. 15:52, work smarter
    5. 18:33, slow down
    6. 21:17, say "thank you"
    7. 24:13, unplug
    8. 26:09, have fun, smile and act like there is life beyond yours
    9. 27:26, stop making everything about personal gain
    10. 29:15, keep learning
    11. 32:17, "can't be a jerk and still get work"

I so enjoyed & appreciate this video. You said soooo much (most of it, actually) that I can relate to. Every single point (other than the gallery “party after the party”.) Never been - really don’t care. But I have had a “dream” to be noticed thru my photos. 😑 Just haven’t had the guts to push it. So I spend time on FB, looking/hoping for likes. You’re right - it’s a waste of time, energy, & brain cells. Thank you for your time and candor. I will be listening to this several times. Hopefully, some of it will sink in.

    One of the best yet!
So many things I would say are 100%. I retired a year ago and I almost have all the same feelings..
Always learn. Even when working every Xmas I would buy a book about something I had no idea about, Roman history, Geology, Politics, just learn something that seems very off topic. You'll be amazed how much you can apply to very different topics.
Driving some where, even on the way to work, go a completely different way. Explore, there is always some thing new around the next corner.
Disconnect to really connect with what is important.
I also spent a lot of time on long flights. Same thing. Phone off computer off. Down time with service! Great prep for the next week!.

Think we are all just need to rebel against the consent onslaught of marketing and advertising campaigns and the consent automation and computerisation of everything and anything , photography is art after all , it should be the most manually purist thing we choose to do .. There isn't anything wrong with taking time and struggling in order to express our creativity or learn a skill for once we succeed the satisfaction we get is complete for that moment .. Digital automation and computerisation of photography is now is starting to spoil this for those of us who only photograph for pleasure and the love of it ..

Only half way though this (doing it bite size sections) but thanks, and man the real photo world sounds shit overall to be honest.
At the moment going though photos to then sort to a website. In the back of my mind wondering why though as what do I want out of it, I’m a bankers mason (carve stone old buildings restoration). Wouldn’t mine adding photo prints sales to that as enjoy making and showing.
But I don’t know sounds like it is all I bit of a shit sort of world to get into. Any way nice one and go steady enjoy listening to your ideas and stuff get up too. Thanks Sam

Selling prints is a doable thing. I would keep your current job but adding in online sales isn't diffi
cult and if your work is good it can sell.
