I visited a friend in Serbia this summer and stayed with his family. His farther, who barely spoke any English, introduced himself as Bobby and (through translation) said he took the name from his all-time favourite player. I immediately knew I was in good company. It just goes to show the reach Sir Bobby Charlton had as a player and as a man.
When I see the rest is football my mind is at piece.😅

I saw Utd, usually at my team Spurs, in the 60s. What a player. The silkiest, smoothest runner with the ball there was and is no one who could touch his skill. Quite unique and deadly
As a Liverpool fan I have to say Sir Bobby was a class act, and never let his success go to his head. A true example to all footballers and people in general today. YNWA sue bobby, some things transcend football

Can't speak highly enough of him. He's the greatest captain I think I've seen in my lifetime at our club - Newcastle l. I don't say that lightly. He's transformed our team and our defence. He played a first time volley assist the other day, that if it was Ronaldo we'd be hearing about it for years. Great player.

I was 10 yrs old when we won the World Cup , I was born in Morpeth but move down to Manchester as a 6 yr old and became a Bobby Charlton fan as I missed my home then Bea came a United fan
Months after the World Cup Bobby and Jackie were given the keys to Ashington and me and my brother went to my grandparents for a holiday . So my grandad took us to Ashington on the bus to watch them get the keys . There where so many people there they ran buses none stop from Newcastle and surrounding areas I was told there was about 200,000 people there
When the car came past , Bobby was so emotional he just sat and waved with tears running down his face , but Jack was stood up waving and shaking hands , if he wasn’t sure how much people loved him before he did that day
Bless him , Gods got one hell of a football team with him now , all the Busby babes back together

For reference the others are Gerd Muller, Franz Beckenbauer, Palo Rossi, Zinedine Zidane, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, and Lionel Messi, that’s the standard, but Sir Bobby did it first. The greatest English player, no question.
It is remarkable looking at what he won, just amazing.

I always remember Sir Bobby being very calm and polite whenever interviewed. Gary doesn't understand the 10,000 hours rule, if I spend 10,000 hours practising football, it makes me the best footballer I can be, my best may still be way below the level that others can reach.

That’s not true though. Look up “the myth of talent”. It’s all about training and practice, coupled with the desire to constantly improve.
Gary O'Neil deserves a huge amount of respect, not only for what he did at Bournemouth, but now the Wolves team is taking shape, playing some great attacking football, and to have 12 points when he was hired less than a week before the start of the season is incredible

I was at that SPOTY back in 09, don't think I shall ever forget the standing ovation for Sir Bobby, and it didn't seem to stop for a good ten minutes, it was in Liverpool too. Really nice night that was.
Great tribute and great intro wasn’t awkward wasn’t down hearted it was pure memory and joy about sir Bobby, may he rest in peace and may I say as a young lad the impact Bobby Charlton has had on my dad and older family Is unbelievable. The only person to bring it home for England may he be at rest.

Far too young to have watched him play, but being a united fan I've seen the clips, the documentaries, films that have come out over the years & what a man, what a life. Was good to see how many turned out to say goodbye.

Great tribute Gary, my very first top flight match was also Leicester v Man Utd at Filbert St. Got to see George Best play but sadly never had the privilege of seeing Sir Bobby play. Sorry, but I remain a Utd fan to this day 🙂

I'm 42 and so didn't really see Bobby Charlton or the 66 team play, even though I know a lot about Greaves with my dad being a Spurs fan, but I do find Charlton's death sad. It's soon the end of an era and only Geoff Hurst left from that group of men who achieved sporting immortality for this Country. Thinking of all the talent and money footballers get paid now and not been able to achieve what that 66 team did. RIP

I would name drop here Johnny Haynes first £100 per week player and the best passer of a football that I have ever seen. Sir Bobby was a different type of midfield player he added goals to his game and that made him different

The Kane/Spurs thing is a kind of a paradox. The team would be better if Kane was there, they would probaly score more goals, the attacking style of Ange would create more opportunities than he was getting with the way that Conte wanted to play,but with him not being in the team they don’t have the luxury of “fuck it, Kane will do something” so the rest of the team has to perform at a higher lvl than they would with him. Tbf it would be kinda funny if they would win something the first year that Kane left the team
Now, I love That Peter Crouch podcast, big fan. But I actually think I like this podcast better. Both are great and I'll continue to watch both. But Micah, gary and Shearer just edge it for me. Brilliant!

my grandad was a Jacky Milburn fanatic, he only ever praised 2 other players, Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton, he told me in 1966 Bobby Charleton was the best player in the world

Speaking from the younger Gen I got curious and watched a few old school games in full. His striking ability gave me Scholes and prolificness gave me Lampard but he could beat a man like the Deco’s, Iniesta’s & Rui Costa’s. England hasn’t really produced a midfielder with those core fundamentals since who turned up on the big occasions as much.
It’s good to take a deep dive every now and again at the greats to realise what was unique and what essentially stayed the same.
You can’t really compare him to any other English player of the modern era. Fast, a dribbler, amazing range of passing, goal scoring, two footed and lethal with both. RIP
I was born in 1957. When I was young Stanley Matthews was held in high esteem. I do recall a televised match in which he played and I didn't see anything impressive, other than that he was 50 years old at the time.

Trippier for me is the best right back in the world, England are blessed in that position with the players we have there but he can defend he can attack his positional play and reading of the game is outstanding, he’s a leader on and off the pitch he’s good at set pieces for a right back he has absolutely everything and that for me is what makes him the best, he’s probably a bit underrated because he plays for Newcastle and not many people watch them but they are entertainers in this league and Trippier plays a massive part in that

I always thought of Bobby as a less complete version of Di Stefano and Cryuff kind of both masters natural successor.
The type of do it all generals, tacticians with perfect all around technique.
I think Rooney was a different type of talent, more like a street bulldog midfield/forward attacker like more or less his twin Tevez, kind of jake for all trades, both fantastic players, but in a lesser level than the 3 masters Ive mentioned before.

In response to Micah’s comments about Italian lifestyle, i think it’s crazy that English clubs would think having a glass of wine with dinner the night before a game would have any negative impact whatsoever. It’s one glass! Clearly the positive mental aspect of having a nice glass of wine outweighs the (non existent) detriment.

Just watched that Leeds Utd clip here on CZcams - this was at the height of their success in the 70s, the Chelsea or Man U of their era - their idea of a night out was playing dominoes at a local pub; training sessions consisted of running around a field, more or less, after which manager Don Revie personally massaged their backs! A far cry from today's overpaid, spoilt, self-absorbed prima donnas.
