Ryan Ross was a genius, musically and lyrically. The first two Panic! albums (Pretty. Odd. especially) are absolutely brilliant records. I truly believe that Ryan’s retreat from music is the 21st century analog to Brian Wilson getting into bed.
I very much agree with you on that Brian Wilson analog, every time I think about cricket and clovers it reminds me of the original smile album and that just hurts me in a way
AFYCSO is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. The writing was phenomenal and instrumentally it’s impressive for bands in that genre. It’s an album with 0 skips. Also, the tour for the album and the Live in Denver show was great.
I absolutely agree!! I am a Denver native and I was at the first show at the Fillmore and it was surreal, I wish I could go back and relive it. I miss their small venue shows like the other one at ogden. What a time to be alive lol
When you said some fans still regard Pretty Odd as their favorite album because either they have just listened to the band and die-hard for them since day one or they just like Ryan Ross, I laughed so hard because YES.
Very very impressive video. I love this. I don't think anybody has done a "documentary" style video on this band like this at least from what I've seen. This is amazing work my friend. However many hours was put into filming and editing, I respect it heavily. It was worth it. Looking forward to part 2!! Please make one! Keep up the great work. Much love❤️💕🤟🏻🤙🏻
I started listening to P! in 2017 out of sheer curiosity, and even then, not knowing a thing about the band's history, the internet made it very clear to me that Ryan's departure was very much a sensitive topic still. So crazy to think about this band's trajectory, especially considering the most recent news. The cautionary tales about rockstars and fame and money and addiction really do materialize into an actual tragedy (not a sin) for some musical acts. It's just so bittersweet for the fans, but knowing what I know now, I can tell it's been that way almost from the get-go
I remember stealing my sisters “a fever” album when I was about 8 years old and listened to it on repeat in my Walkman until it was too scratched to play. I still love it to this day and just gave it a listen for the first time in years last week. It’s timeless especially for those who grew up in that era and kind of “get it” The production of this video is great, keep up the good work!!
Oh man! I remember being in middle school with my friends going through our emo phase, we were obsessed with FOB, MCR, Paramore and Panic! And when Pretty. Odd. came out I LOVED it. Replayed it on my cd player and in the car constantly. My mom loved it too and I still replay it as an adult with her when we go on drives. She loves Infinity on High and Brand New Eyes too. I miss my CDs! Can't believe they're considered old now lol.
I saw them in Milwaukee on the Honda civic tour. I still remember they played Folkin Around (already the least popular song on PO) and Ryan made sure before AND AFTER the song to remind everyone that Brendan wrote that one. I didn't know much of what was going on behind the scenes at the time, but even then it was really heavy-handedly passive aggressive
Fun Fact : In 80s there's also have a band from English/German named "Picnic at the Whitehouse" and Edwin Hind, Lead singer from this group. Very much lookalike Brendon in some point.
pretty sure this guy likes their new stuff, he barely complimented any of these albums and was simping for fucking death of a bachelor. which i understand it has more mainstream appeal, and its honestly not a bad album at all. its actually quite good. but damn ryan is a genius and these albums really show it.
As someone who was obsessed with this band in middle and high school, ever since AFYCSO was released in 2005 (after hearing about them on MySpace), this is very well researched and really brought me back. Panic! was my very first concert ever on their Nothing Rhymes with Circus tour. Fun fact: The year they went on the Honda Civic tour, I didn't have enough money for tickets. This would have been my first time missing them coming to my city since 2006, which was DEVASTATING at the time, so I begged my mom for the money. She said, and I quote: "Panic at the disco isn't going anywhere." One year later I have her SO much shit for that comment.
I think I felt my soul leave my body when you said Pretty Odd came out 14 years ago lol 💀 great video though! so much nostalgia, I vaguely remembered the original bassist suing them but I never heard about him getting arrested, that's wild. very excited to check out part 2 now!

Love him or hate him you have to credit Brendon for keeping the band relevant after Spencer departure for almost 15 years salute to panic and retirement
I actually couldn’t believe there was mixed opinion on Pretty! Odd receiving mixed reviews at the time. I was too young to care about reviews at the time, but it is still to this day one of my all timers. But it is a studio album, great for a front to back listen on a long car ride or work day. Also folk music kicks ass
Panic at the disco will always have a special place in my heart I remember being a kid watching the music video for lying is the most fun you can have with out teming ur clothes of off on MTV hit list the fish bowl concept was always interesting
dude I love your content! this was so well thought out. just a piece of constructive criticism, I think your script could benefit from another set of eyes looking it over for word choice! You are killing it though, keep it up!
I first found new perspective (I came in later) and then found the ballad of Mona Lisa and nearly witches, which have always resonated with me. Now, V&V is my fav album but ofc I still love AFYCSO and Pretty. Odd as they r my second and third fav and the lyrics r awesome (ily Ryan ross) but V&V will always be my fav
It’s so frustrating because he’s insanely talented but his own cockiness ruined him. he would be much more liked & respected had he let go of the the name and went solo. He probably wouldn’t have felt the pressure to continue to sing like that anymore. Great voice but he can’t hit the same notes consistently. a good overall performer but it’s extremely obvious Ryan was the core of panic!
I didn't really like Pretty Odd much except for some songs, it's just very close to The Beatles. A Fewer You Cant Sweat had a fairly unique style, a style that apparently none of the members wanted to follow. But Ryan wanted to take the band to a The Kinks, while Brendan wanted to take the band to something more mainstream and explosive. I understand that many fans who only love Ryan for how he looks say that his exit changed Panic for the worse, but on the contrary, I think that Panic was going to be different and honestly Brendan's focus was more accurate than being The Beatles 2. Leaving aside that I would have liked them to return to their roots at some point and that neither of the two paths they took were to my liking.
if you’re getting kicked out of a band, you’re the last one to know it’s coming. plenty of conversations happened leading up to it, you’re just not a part of them.

Dawg I just cannot agree with you about Pretty Odd. It took me a while to warm up to since I was a silly middle schooler who thought it was lame, but lyrically it's still so true to who early patd was. It's got the same drama with a folky, dreamy coat of paint and I think it's genius. its such a good album on its own and stands up so well. i think if ryan ross had written more records with the band after it, it wouldnt feel as out of place in the discography but his departure really fundamentally changed the dna of patd. it feels like vices and virtues was still trying to be that kind of drama-y thing but without ryan ross it skewed in a different direction, and then w too weird to live it took that sharp turn into brendon uries solo project it feels like pretty odd was just the second act of something great but it got cut short and tbh im never going to forgive brendon urie patd really belonged to ryan ross like im not gonna lie to myself and say i dont like vices or death of a bachelor, theyve both got some really good tracks and i feel like doab is the best album lyrically that brendon released solo. theyre both good albums but theyre not panic at the disco, theyre brendon urie. especially ready to go, when i hear it im like thats a brendon urie song thats not a panic at the disco song. the songs that i think sound like brendon have this layered vocal thing that makes it sound like theres an orchestra behind his vocal chords and i wont say its not good, but it does get samey. like when i listen through their discography i keep hearing it and i just get bored of it. i dont wanna kid myself and say i feel nothing about brendons solo albums bc i was a huge fan, but as more shit abt him has come out and as the albums have gotten worse and worse, its really hard to look back on anything past too weird to live in a positive light. it just feels like he didnt care that much and i know that cant be true for all of those albums, he had to have some kind of artistic motivation, but they feel bankrupt in some way

Brendan is a fantastic performer, musician, and vocalist. It's not easy to keep a band like that alive and he did very well for a very long time.
I saw them in Milwaukee on the Honda civic tour. They broke up on my 15th birthday and I can’t even begin to explain how devastated I was. My poor lil teeny bopper heart. 💔
same thing happened to me and mcr! I bet we'll see Brandon solo projects in the future
You can hear how some of the melody of “this true love” made it into “nine in the afternoon”

Pretty Odd is a masterpiece, I feel like it's their best album by FAR

Its a fantastic album and their last great album. Everything Brendan did was diminishing returns. Just a bunch of cheap at times catchy pop songs.
