Thank you so much for this. I thought DnD 5e knowledge would somewhat help in playing this game, but it was still pretty overwhelming. Really appreciate the guide!
About Concentration: When casting a spell and you are in Threat Range of a enemy you will do a Cast Defensively (Concentration vs DC 15 check) if that fails you will trigger Attacks of Opportunity. Playing as a Magus Sword Saint I find this stat super useful.
If it's like Pathfinder the DC should be 15 + double the spell your castings level. I haven't dug into it though since generally once you pick up combat casting it isn't to much of an issue
This breakdown of mechanics is so good that its applicable for more games than just this one. I wish I'd seen this a long time ago...this is perfectly broken down, thanks so much for taking the time here.
Priceless tutorial. I have contemplated downloading a pathfinder rules pdf just to learn the mechanics of this game but your videos are fast making that option obsolete. Thank you so much for the time you are saving all of us!
These videos are great, I've introduced a few friends to Pathfinder since WOTR released and being able to point these videos out to them to help with the huge learning curve is a blessing. Thank you.
This is a great spellcasting "primer" for anyone unfamiliar with Pathfinder. You should do a video about bonus types and stacking buffs to get the most benefit. I'm sure it doesn't make sense to a lot of people why they cast bless and aid and heroism, but their attack bonus doesn't increase as much as they expected!
If you're not sure what school of magic to specialize in, you can either go with Evocation or, my new favorite, Illusion magic. Once I understood how Phantasm Killer / Weird and Shadow Evocation worked thanks to Nenio, I suddenly realized just how amazing Illusion spells are.
This is great! When playing NWN and Kingmaker I've avoided spellcasters, because it seemed somewhat overwhelming to get in to with arcane, divine, schools, prepared, spontaneous, and so on. I'd be very interested in a part 2 of this video where more of the pitfalls and the possibilities of spellcasting are discussed. How can we build good arcane and divine spellcasters, with prepared and spontaneous spellcasting?
I know this is multiple months later, but if you ever get the chance to play DND 5th edition with some friends a lot of the mechanics are similar to how DND does spellcasting. In addition a lot of the classes and subclasses are similar too for example I picked up draconic bloodline sorcerer with my first character and it worked somewhat similarly to how a draconic sorcerer in 5e would work.
Thanks for this. It helped organize the system for me. An extra idea that would be interesting would be a strategy guide around countering general mechanics. What to do when meeting certain buffs in enemies? Mirror image, entangle, enraged, concealed, etc.
thx that's the Video I really need! PLS KEEP UP YOUR AWESOME WORK!!! But to be honest your videos are very good and not just Paperwork they really work in game
Hope you're feeling better. What I like most about playing a spellcaster in this game is the strategic depth and breadth called for. Do you use your innate spell or use a scroll? Timing of area effect spells...which feat to get when...use of metamagic. All add a depth to the game almost unmatched by most other games.
The annoying thing about 'timing' AoE spells in real time though is that you also have to take a gamble in predicting attack rolls between choosing to cast the spell and when it procs; because initiative is a bit of a mess to track in real time. Enemies or teammates might move before the spell goes off and change the effectiveness of the spell. Some games make an attempt to remedy some of the guess work. Pillars of Eternity, for example, has a depleting line above the heads of characters counting down to their spot in the initiative order. So you can declare the spell just before their turn to minimize enemies or allies moving before the animation finishes.
Using Turn-based makes timing spells much more about the strategy of turn orders instead of trying to hit a moving target. Turn-based mode is amazing in general because of how dynamic it makes the strategic game play. Much more so than real-time IMHO.
As someone whose still making their way through Kingmaker and is interacting less with spell casters atm, this is helping a lot with wrapping my head around how spell casting works. Thanks a bunch! :)
Incredible guide. Would have been cool to see you going over memorizing spells, domain spells, and Metamagic spells as they confuse the hell out of me. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this vídeo. Started this game yesterday and didnt understand how spells work, almost unistalled it. Altought I still dont understand how magic works here, I'll keep playing thanks to you. I come from games where you dont have a limit of spells (Dragon Age, DO S 1&2). Right now my character can cast like a frozen spell that is limitless and a summon one that I can only once everytime I sleep.
Most casters have level 0 spells that you can cast for free and an unlimited times per day but they’re comparatively bad to “real” spells. Spells of level 1 or above need to be chosen or “prepared” ahead of time - or you have a set number of each level that can be cast. These are prepared casting or spontaneous casting and all magic users fall into these two categories.
Sorcerer = Can cast more spells before you have to rest, downside is you choose less spells to learn each level up. Can be great if you only cast a few spells over and over, like magic missile, fire spells, damaging spells, or crowd control spells. Main stat charisma. Wizard = Can cast less spells before you have to rest, you have to manually drag the spells you want to use in the spellbook menu. Downside is you can only cast the spells you "prepared" but you learn more spells each level up compared to sorcerer. Main stat intelligence. Spell feats you should focus on, anything spell related obviously (has spell in the name). Point blank shot and precise shot as this feat applies to all ranged attacks not just bows. Spell penetration is a must have, Ascendant element mythic feat is a must have if you plan on doing damage with spells like fireball, lightning bolt, etc. IMO spells and martial in this game are equally confusing lol.
Thanks a ton for this video, very helpful. One thing I noticed while playing and still don't fully understand is concentration checks. Sometime my caster (or the enemy caster) stands right next to a melee and casts a spell without an attack of opportunity activating. It's not just the AoO is missing (would stated so in the combat log) but their is just none.
There's a roll to see if they can cast their spell without triggering an AoO, casting defensively check or something to that effect I believe off the top of my head. In the case of your own spellcasters the safe bet is usually to try to take your five foot step away though
@@MortismalGaming Maybe I'm going crazy but the last hours with my magus, I just stood in the face of the enemy and casted touch spells on them without triggering AoO and nothing popped up in combat log. I will check again, thanks.
@@unknowna23 Don't quote me on this but I Think touch spells are the exception like ghost touch or something. Cause it's akin to hitting with a sword. I noticed that when playing the dwarf cleric companion from kingmaker
I always thought the main difference between divine and Arcane spellcasting was that, from an RP perspective, Divine is from your deity and Arcane is from the 'ether', 'universe', or whatever lore the game uses as a source of arcane magic, and as such Divine spells don't have armour based spell failures and can be alignment limited. It appears that both Divine and Arcane spellcasters have prepared and spontaneous class options. Did you take any cure sickness potions, or use scrolls, whilst you were sick? Hope you get better soon.
Thanks! Yes Divine spells are usually granted by some other power, but that's mostly a RP thing, and yes they aren't subject to spell failure, I mention that when I talk about spell failure towards the end
By the level of each class you have levels in. So you have to four levels of paladin to get level 1 paladin spells, even if you have 4 levels of sorc already. Some prestige classes continue spell progression
This is great. I kind of want to go through as a caster at some point but I’ve been discouraged due to the limitations of how many spells you can actually cast, and how often they are resisted and negated. Using my companions I hardly ever bring the spell casters along because I can’t ever seem to actually connect with an enemy, and when I do it’s not even worth the effort because almost all of the enemies are resistant to all of the elements you would hit them with. Even worse, I’ll cast crowd control spells or status spells C on the log that I overcame their resistance and then check the enemy only to see that nothing happened. So I don’t know if it’s me or if spellcasting is just broken in someway in this patch.
@@Farquard Then why every time i use a damaging spell, like Hellfire Ray for example, i always get DMG(Reduced)? With the Mythic Feat that allows bypassing resistances.
@@user-hx3fu1pj7w Hellfire ray isn't being reduced by DR. It's being reduced by the fact half of that spell's damage is "Unholy." But Demons ARE unholy, and thus have 100% inherent, non-bypassable, immunity to unholy damage. So ONLY the fire damage for Hellfire Ray breaks through. That's like casting Searing Light at an angel.
@@user-hx3fu1pj7w As Shawn said, that or maybe its spell resistance. Check the combat log, it should have the info. Oh and you also need to hit with rays.
I could not play this game without these excellent guides. One question: Why play a Wizard? Sorcerer gets spontaneous casting and the same spells. What does a Wiz get that a Sorcerer does not in exchange for having to memorize spells?
Wizards add any arcane scrolls to their permanent spell list by right-clicking them, making their lists much more versatile in the long run. Each wizard specialty also gets a perk depending on which school you chose to focus on (evocation gets extra casts of a single force missile, for example). The other limit to sorcerers (and other spontaneous casters) is that you can only get new spells on level up, and you can only pick 2 or 3 per level and they cannot be changed. Because of that limitation a maxed out sorcerer is only going to have 5-10 spell options per tier in his spell book.
Do you think you could make a complete beginner guide ? Like what base stats do. When to take str dex etc. Difference between diffent types of attack. Touch range etc. Why some melee take str and other dex. How to increase dc of spell etc
Good vid. Was hoping to find a way to quicken spell casting. With out investment in metamagic quicken. I guess i can meta magic quicken with mythic feats. Thought higher dex would help cast time lol.
do you have any plans on making a general build guide for spellcasters? What races to play, feats ect ect? Just asking cuz Ive yet to see many spellcasting focused builds being thought up. Which is a shame cuz WOTR has much more potential to create OP casters. (My favorite thing to do is to go half-elf kindred raised, get +4 to charisma just from the racial bonuses and the ability to pick up elven magic as a feat. +6 to all spell DC's at level 4 is ridiculous.)
Great guide, I only wish you had info on the schools of magic, I'm super clueless about those and which spells fall under each one to know what to specialize in.
I don't know about paladins, but bloodrager caster lvl = class level, even tho he has only few spell levels. So basically when you get your 1st lvl spells at lvl 4, your caster lvl is 4. (at least this is what tooltip says)

Great guide! I however have realized in my first play through that spells sometimes state that they are not affected by magic resistance. And still get blocked by it. Is that a bug or am I missing something
How does casting level work with mythic spellbooks? And also, does having access to mythic spellbook meet the requirement for some prestige classes, like Eldritch Knight or Loremaster?
Can someone kindly clarify some aspects of DC for me? I have an Eldritch scoundrel with Burning hands spell, hovering it says DC 15. So this is the Difficulty i have to overcome to just make the spell? How is this DC determined exactly? Spell is level 1, I kind of came to the conclusion that its based on "10 + INT + spell level", since i have 4 in INT, its 10+4+1 = 15. Now this is where i am confused, that means a character with Lower INT would have greater chance of succeeding the same spell, since less INT is added to the DC ? Secondly, after you use a spell on someone, I can read in description that it succeeded and I also see the character used a DC to defend against the spell, how is this DC determined of the enemy to defend a spell?
Excelent video, Mortismal. I wanted to ask about stacking of effects. For example if I apply difficult terrain, say through spike growth or something, that will slow enemies. What happens if I cast the spell slow on them? Will they get slowed further, or is the slowing effect just one incremental step, that doesn't stack with similar slowing effects?
Generally slow alters their base speed, while difficult terrain alters the units of movement needed to cover a given distance. They should definitely stack; and do in D&D, which is the basis for Pathfinder.
So, with what I am understanding an seeing in game, if you want to make an arcane caster effective, you will need to put one mythic feat into that remove immunity thing? Otherwise with how many demons and thing resistant to cold/fire/acid/lightning, its not easy to do damage
@@MidnightHozz good to know. I really want to try a run as a magus, but between arcane casting, resistances and the whole getting attack of opportunity everytime I cast a spell in melee, I wasn't sure. Thia might help
What is the advantage of being memorizable caster class? Spontaneous ones have less hassle, and all of their spells are ready whenever. I can't understand whether spell preparing classes are just inferior or i'm missing something?
Casters who have to prepare spells usually have a larger pool of spells to choose from, and it let's you choose exactly how many times you want to cast a particular spell instead of only getting a set number per spell level. A lot of it comes down to preference
Lots of ways to overpower it. Overwhelming Mage. Elementalist Wizard casting their preferred element. And yeah, if you can get CL30, there are only a couple enemies in the game that will have a reasonable chance of resisting. (*coughVanguardcough*)

No, element ascended overrides Immunity not spell resistance. You have to overcome resistance then ascended element will overcome immunity to that element.
Spell penetration determines if your spell hits. Resistance determines if the damage done by the spell is reduced. Element Ascendend deals with this second part.

So, anyway, this is my next game. I’m happily playing POE2 until the next time this goes on sale 😁😁😁
Uuuuummmm.. Sorcerers use arcane magic and cant copy spells. Oracles use divine magic but dont get all spells. I think the initial differentiation of the two is a bit crippled. I think it is a much bigger deal that you can use divinespells in armour and arcane is subjected to spell failure. One you get and the other is given? maybe?
They really over complicated spell casting. Wish it was more like bg1 style. They nailed it in those games, patherfinder spellcasting feel really odd and badly over complicated.

Generally slow alters their base speed, while difficult terrain alters the units of movement needed to cover a given distance. They should definitely stack; and do in D&D, which is the basis for Pathfinder.
*my friend didnt tell me about this whole ass system when tellinf me to get pathfinder*
My Head hurts xD
When a Game becomes like doing Taxes D:
So Ranged Touch attacks benefit from Dexterity, but what about regular, melee touch attacks for spells like Inflict Wounds? Do they use Strength?
Correct, though you wont typically be making a build around melee touch attacks
So, with what I am understanding an seeing in game, if you want to make an arcane caster effective, you will need to put one mythic feat into that remove immunity thing? Otherwise with how many demons and thing resistant to cold/fire/acid/lightning, its not easy to do damage
@@MidnightHozz good to know. I really want to try a run as a magus, but between arcane casting, resistances and the whole getting attack of opportunity everytime I cast a spell in melee, I wasn't sure. Thia might help
2:10 and there is also arcanist :D and magus :D
What is the advantage of being memorizable caster class? Spontaneous ones have less hassle, and all of their spells are ready whenever. I can't understand whether spell preparing classes are just inferior or i'm missing something?
Casters who have to prepare spells usually have a larger pool of spells to choose from, and it let's you choose exactly how many times you want to cast a particular spell instead of only getting a set number per spell level. A lot of it comes down to preference
Okay I have to ask. Are you reading from notes? If not I am very impressed and confused trying to follow LOL
I make bullet points of things so I don't forget subjects
Have to say, weird you do not like bards, I always found Linzi pretty helpful in kingmaker. I will roll a Kitsume bard and see how it goes :)
Linzi's starting spells are... not much use. As a bard your spells are secondary.
l have a problem because l need space of spells
I low-key wish I could turn off spell resistance
overwhelming mage + merge lich spellbook, CL 30. nothing can ever stop your spell from penetrating
Lots of ways to overpower it. Overwhelming Mage. Elementalist Wizard casting their preferred element. And yeah, if you can get CL30, there are only a couple enemies in the game that will have a reasonable chance of resisting. (*coughVanguardcough*)
Most important spell you should learn is dispel magic, have fun. Removes 90% of the reasons new players will die.
What causes "spell was lost"? Is that concentration or spell failure?
Typically that's spell failure, mousing over it in the dialogue box should give more information
I see you're going for a tank ember build lol
OK what is the star for in the spell book anyone know
Spells you've applied metamagic too, I made a separate guide for that
How was your HP at like35K??? I’m only at the end of act 2 so maybe it jumps up a hyper amount but damnnn…
I was using a mod to make gathering footage faster lol
@@MortismalGaming I figured it was something like that but I’m stuck on console so no mods for me… Thank you for the reply and a huge thank you for all your time and incredible work! You have provided me with hundreds of hours of entertainment and you are the reason I picked up this gem of a game. Keep up the great work man and I will continue to look forward to anything you put out. Hope you a have a great day.
ufff. i feel a headache coming ...
Please help me understand this! - MY Nenio is level 11 wizard with 26 Int (20 base + 2 racial + 4 headband) BUT I can only cast spells upto level 6. I cannot cast level 7 spells. Same is the case with Woljif.
But everywhere on the internet and in-game description says the stat requirement is 10+spell level. But that is clearly not happening in my case. What am I missing? PLEASE help I've spent hours and hours on this.
A wizard doesn't get 7th level spells until level 13
@@MortismalGaming Thank you so much! But where is it mentioned though? I've gone through the ENTIRE in-game encyclopedia. Started new game just to check if it's mentioned in pop-up tips. Checked the internet for wiki and even forums.
You're literally the only person I've found who actually knows this. Where is it mentioned??
@@MortismalGaming I'm sorry if I'm being dumb with this... but I'm still struggling to find the info about level requirements... I'm pretty sure I've looked hard unless I'm missing something sitting in plain sight.
Please tell me where does it mention the level requirements (it's not in the encyclopedia or even online wiki). Would really appreciate the help.
@@gmabitx1 it's just Pathfinders spell progression, can look it up in the table top rules
So if I get Element Ascendend for example Fire. I won't need spell penetration anymore if everything I do is casting fire spell?
No. Element ascendent means it ignores elemental resistance and immunity. You still need to roll for spell pen.
No, element ascended overrides Immunity not spell resistance. You have to overcome resistance then ascended element will overcome immunity to that element.
You still need spell pen. Spell resistance and elemental resistance are 2 separate mechanics.
@@999lijpo999 Can you elaborate how difference are they? I have no idea what is what.
Spell penetration determines if your spell hits. Resistance determines if the damage done by the spell is reduced. Element Ascendend deals with this second part.
free comment.
damn ember has a lot of health for you
Can you please tell me how to use hex? I can't find it anywhere in spellbook. I got iceplant, but I can't see it anywhere.
why dose ember have 30k hitpoints
Mods
Thanks for all these videos on WOTR, when I finally get it I’ll be ready!
I trust your opinion, and I think this is your favorite game??
BG3 got annoying (constant sexual beratement regardless of gender OR RACE! 😂) (Then in A3 I’m getting hammered every time I say F these refugees let’s look after the BG folk) I got my dollar an hour out of it though, 70 on the dot.
So, anyway, this is my next game. I’m happily playing POE2 until the next time this goes on sale 😁😁😁
More importantly 35012 hp Lol. How can we get our hp so high. I play on core Wished. I had that much hp.
Mods, buffing con basically removes fatigue, which makes getting video faster
Uuuuummmm.. Sorcerers use arcane magic and cant copy spells. Oracles use divine magic but dont get all spells. I think the initial differentiation of the two is a bit crippled. I think it is a much bigger deal that you can use divinespells in armour and arcane is subjected to spell failure. One you get and the other is given? maybe?
I talk about spell failure toward the end, and I mention onscreen there are exceptions to the rule
They really over complicated spell casting. Wish it was more like bg1 style. They nailed it in those games, patherfinder spellcasting feel really odd and badly over complicated.
First!
Dude wtf, I want to like this game but jesus its soo much crap to know.
Why did ember have thirty-five thousand health bro lmfaooo
Mods, buffing constitution specifically, makes gathering footage for these types of videos easier as you are both almost impossible to kill and it stops fatigue/exhaustion for faster map travel.
