  • In this video I'm using the clear primed Belgian linen to it's best advantage. The natural neutral tone of the linen is perfect for striving to achieve a finished painting without as much work. This can be done by leaving a lot of the unpainted linen exposed! The trick here is knowing which parts to paint and what bits to leave raw.
In this demonstration I will be using a stretched - three coats - clear primed Belgian linen. My medium will be oil paint applied with palette knifes.

Love your tent. Looks like the one my Dad had. He another one with a floor in it from World War 2 Army tent that he used to take my bother and I with him in the 1950s and 1960s Love watching your outdoor travels and paintings.

G'day Richard, bit late replying here. Had to take in what you created and the simplicity and yet, depth of the background horizon. So much to experience once again. This one touched me deeply, not sure why. That knife lives and breathes as it sweeps, pulls and pushes the paint across the canvas. It is poetry in motion and what a story it tells. This is one of your best mate and I have many favourites. Thanks once again for your generosity in sharing your journey. Cheers, Rich

Another fabulous work, Richard! I love the way you vignette in many of your paintings, allowing the "raw" linen to show, particularly in the foreground, but in this one you have allowed it to shine all over. Such great work! How in the world do you ever restrain yourself from elaborating on those gums? They are just so expressive by nature. We have gums in Northern California, imported from guess where, but it's rare to find them quite as expressive as those you have natively in Oz. In this one you set out for minimalism and you achieved it masterfully. Bravo!

I like watching you make the whole panting before my eyes yet I still can't tell when the magic happens hat transforms the marks into a painting. Also as you work the image becomes realistic but when you take the camera off and zoom in it becomes quite abstract again. Love it!
