In today's video I talk about my process of sending back this MSI RTX 4080 Suprim that I bought second hand, and everything involved in the process, as well as some stories I have heard (in aus) when things go bad...

Used to work for the biggest tech seller in France. Did many many RMA in the past and the best one that I saw was MSI who upgraded the laptop of a customer. He bought something like a gaming laptop at 2000€. The client was very a pain to manage and was never satisfied of the fix (thermal issue but it was a very slim gaming laptop with an intel chip that was consumming a lot of power and making a lot of heat) After the third RMA MSI upgraded the client with a laptop that was retailling at 5000€ ! and the best part. The client was not satisfied ...

ive had to rma to quite a bit of major manufactures.
1: asus is fast but be sure your card has no blemishes or scratches on the pcb or anything that shows it wasn't taken care of. Got one card warranty repair declined that was over heating and then stopped displaying out anything. they pointed a tiny scratch on the very corner of the pcb that was there for nearly 8 months since day one inserting the card in a small case lol.
2: adata, they took well over 2.5 months to send replacement drives.
3: silicon power took about 2 weeks to rma and send a new nvme, very happy with them
4: thermalright - all they needed was pics and videos showing the aio was broke, they instantly sent out a new one next day.
5: evga - they sent a very nasty and scratched up replacement motherboard that was missing all the covers and accessories and still had issues. quick turn around though about 2 weeks
6: ekwb - NIGHTMARE _ No... too long to list lol
7: lian li - amazing, send video of failed fan, got new one sent out quickly
those are just the notable ones.

It's good to talk about this! Like you say, there's not a lot of media talking about this.
RMAs here in The Netherlands normally work such that the (r)etailer confirms the card shows the described problems and immediately give you a new one. They then deal with the RMA of the old card themselves. (R)etailers are also required to offer at least 2 years of warranty, which in most cases is the same duration as the company that made the product, meaning we generally don't deal with the companies at all.
EDIT: Ah, additionally (and this is a little known fact that sellers love to omit), many (r)etailers do have a clause here that the person on the invoice must be able to identify themselves for the RMA. This means that, like for Bryan, you better buy from a seller that is willing to work with you on that. I am of the opinion that "comes with receipt" doesn't mean anything, because if the seller is not willing to cooperate when you need them to, it really is worthless and you're not getting your RMA. Because of this I don't offer more for GPUs that come with a receipt, unless it is from a very reputable seller.

In Denmark it's a bit easier when dealing with second-hand RMA, you just need to show them the original invoice (a photocopy will not suffice in most cases). But if it's a digital invoice which is typically a pdf file, you just provide that. In Germany you'd actually need the original owner to sign a document transferring the ownership to you, and then you need the original invoice as well.

RMA there is really bad and sometimes can take weeks because all the parts are ordered after the diagnostic of the product, they do not have most certain and needed parts in the warehouse. In EU, the seller/manufacturer has to fix the issue in 14 days or legal action will be taken against them. You can guess that there were a lot of trials back then.

My worst RMA experience is with MSI :
I bought a GTX 780 Twin FROZR brand new when it just got out so full price at the time(no discount etc.) from one of their official partner resellers, a tech site in my country.
The card died while gaming, by that I mean it just shut down my pc with a burnt smell coming from the gpu, after a year of so still under reseller AND MSI warranty so I sent it back to the reseller which sent it back to MSI for repair.
It took 2 months without any replacement or news about progress to get something back.
Finally after 10 weeks, during summer, without a gpu, I got the same gpu back "repaired"(I don't know I didn't try it in my pc) with A LOT OF dents on the shroud and the heatsink, scratches all over the pcb. The GPU's box was tored up and the shipping box was all beat up. UNACCEPTABLE! I sent them a pristine product. I take care of my stuff. If I had sent it to them in that state, there wouldn't even be an RMA. I was so angry.
I contacted the reseller which told me to send pictures, so I did and they replied "WOW, yeah....." and told me to chose an equivalent GPU from their listing and I chose the EVGA GTX 970 FTW. Worked flawlessly for me until I sold it to somebody. That was the last MSI item I have ever purchased. Never again.
Then there was Corsair with the K70 rapidfire RGB that had a known controller issue with some leds stuck on the red color that I bought from Amazon. Amazon told me to contact Corsair. I did and Corsair wouldn't pay for shipping(like 35€ or so) to get it back, even though it was still under their warranty, because I lived in Europe. A 170€ keyboard mind you. After some back and forth, I reluctantly sent it back to them ON MY FEE, to get a new one from a revised batch. I sent it on 3 days shipping because I need it rapidly and they sent the new one on a 2 weeks shipping rate.
A year later the keyboard showed some issues again and the iCue software was so bad at that time. I got rid of it. I never bought any Corsair product since. Custom keyboards are miles better anyway. Haven't looked back since.

    MSI is crap.
    Bought my son a desktop Intel 12th i7 12700K with a RTX 3060.
It had a water cooling AIO.
But the PC would constantly crash and make ticking sounds before it did that. It sounded like a fan was hitting wires, but it wasn't.
It was the VRam safety protection that were clicking off to protect themselves.
Sent it back for RMA, we had to pay shipping again, no drop offs.
They sent it back, replaced AIO worked for a month then started doing the same thing.
They wanted us to ship it back again at our cost.
Shipping cost was $120 each time.
So I finally bought a CPU air cooler, Noctua D15 dual fan, massive, but not a single issue since then.

Aussie here: I've only had to do one RMA for computer hardware in the last 20 years as well as two warranty claims.
The RMA was for a Leadtek Geforce 6800 GT with dodgy memory that dragged on so long (over 3 months), that the shop I bought it from (Harris Technology) offered a full refund. _As it turned out, cards had dropped in price in the meantime, so I bought a Gainward 6800 Ultra GS (elsewhere) with the refund and had $100 left over._
The first warranty claim was a Viewsonic 20" 1600x 1200 monitor that would randomly scream and go blank but come back a few minutes later. I rang up warranty claims and they organised a courier to pick it up *but* cross-shipped a new monitor at the same time. _The 20" was no longer available so I was given the 21" version in its place._
The second warranty claim (during COVID) was a curved 27" 1440p ASUS ROG gaming monitor that decided that it would green acid-wash the image no matter what resolution, PC, cable or video card I threw at it. ASUS organised the courier and it went for a trip up to Queensland (I'm in Sydney) for repair. The repair centre kept me updated saying they had tested the display and ordered the parts required to repair it. Three days later, they deemed it "unfixable" and ASUS Australia had the reseller refund me the purchase price. _Ended up getting a LG 1440p monitor (elsewhere) for just over half the amount refunded._
BTW. EVGA video cards warranties starting back in July 2011 followed the product, not the person who purchase the card. You could transfer any remaining warranty to the 2nd hand buyer assuming you were still within the 3-year time from when EVGA shipped the product. This did not extend to the purchase of extended warranties though. *Alas, they're no longer an OEM partner in the graphic card market.*

Back when the 30 Series cards were coming out I had a 2080 that was having issues. I ended up RMA'ing with MSI (it was a Seahawk with a Liquid cooler). Long story short it was right as the inventory problems were becoming an issue, so the only thing they had available was a Ventus 2080 Ti... That's what they sent me back since they had no 2080s that were as good as or better than the Seahawk and no stock of 2080 Supers or 3080s... So sometimes an RMA can turn into an unexpected upgrade

I had my Asus 3080Ti RMA last year, took about two weeks back and forth, first time they sent back a card that is like had an abuse in the repair shop. Scratches everywhere. I had to directly email Asus about that. Fortunately Asus did read my email and escalated to the RMA department about the issue. I don't mean to get a brand new card, but the scratches on the front and back just hurt my heart. My card was mint and scratch free, coming back with a card that looks like ran through a bucket of nails just simply not acceptable. took another week for them to send back another card for replacement. So far it still working fine, but not sure if continue buying Asus next time.

I had a Samsung 980 Pro 2tb that one day just stopped working and did not show up in windows. I suspect it had the old firmware and those drives had some problems regarding the old firmware. RMA took about 1.5 - 2 months but finally they replaced the drive with the same model new drive. That one had the new firmware installed. Thats a positive solution even though those rmas sometimes take a long time.

My experience with MSI rma was pretty bad this is going to back to the 8800gts model. The card I had started having issues without putting a display over dvi-d. sent the card back they had a look and sent me a totally different card (looked completely different). The place I bought it from said it works but after taking it home plugged it into the pc. Card did not post and back to the place of purchase had a very heated conversation with them. Ended up with a brand new card to take home and a different brand. From then onwards I steered clear of MSI but having seen this video looks like they have changed a lot. May give them another chance in near future.
    This was in Australia also.

As for the question of the day, I suppose that if you want another free alternative, you could also cut up one of the 6pin connectors and tape it onto the other one. You might have to file the edge of the intact 6pin connector a bit as the outer edge is likely too thick to function as an inner edge. Just make sure you safely tape up any loose wires from the remainder of the sacrificial 6pin connector :D pretty sketchy too but I would totally be willing to do that on a proprietary PSU like that, as long as it's for my own use!

The RMA process is usually good if you complete the paperwork accurately. Not the case with all companies though. I’ve been trying without success to RMA a Samsung 980 Pro that has the bad firmware. The drive is in “read only” mode and cannot be flashed to the updated firmware. This is a known issue. Samsung is very aware of the problem yet still refused my RMA. I haven’t given up and Samsung is #1 on the “Tech Luvn Wall of Shame”. I mention them in every video and will never install a Samsung product in my builds. I have gone so far as to refuse a build where the customer had Samsung drives. I loathe Samsung for what they did. I don’t like being ripped off.

Here in Sweden RMA is usualy very easy. You just contact the retailer you bought the product from and send it to them.
Then they will check it out and either send you a replacement or a full refund. I once had a faulty RTX 2080 Super.
I sent it back to the store and they sent it to the manufacturer but they could not replace it.
So even though the card was like over year old i got a full refund. This was during the GPU shortage but i managed to get a brand new RTX 3070
And even get some money back from that refund lucky me. 🙂
And as for the second hand market they just need the receip. No extra proof of ownership is required here.
