    Slow the speed down to 25% at 0:27, see how close the gator came to getting a hold of the horse's front leg. It was almost clamped in the gators jaws, but the horses powerful thrust forward prevented the gator from clamping down. I guess that's we use horsepower to describe the power of an engine :-)

    This happened outside of the town I live in. The horses are wild and live on the prairie. This is a stallion trying to protect his mares that you can see behind him. The alligators sun themselves on the bank during the day, but they have been known to take a foal if they get the opportunity, so it's not out of the ordinary to see aggression between the two species.

      Payne's Prairie outside of Gainesville FL. It's a nature preserve situated on a very old ranch. The area has alligators, wild cattle, wild horses, buffalo, and about a zillion alligators.

      I frequent this park and know this stallion. He is notoriously a jerk and will chase people to the boardwalk at La Chua (this trail) or to the fenced area at Cones Dike... despite someone being at a safe distance and not paying attention to him. The alligator posed no danger whatsoever and was sunbathing.

      This is what stallions do. Stallions are jerks. That is their nature. It’s large amounts of testosterone. I’ve had to handle thoroughbred stallions and they were all ass holes. You can train and condition them to not be ass holes but you have to start at an early age. Wild stallions are just going to be jerks. I bet that alligator never gets close to a horse again.

They move very slowly on flat land from a resting position aside from lunges. Anyone who's championing the horse or seeing him as the hero of the story has it all wrong.

    I'm a Floridian and driven I-75 thru Payne's Prairie many times. Unusual, protected area. That horse knew a predator when he saw it and prey animals hate them. So, he let him have a few kicks and it seemed to hurt the gator. Hope horse is fine.

      @@davidstinger1134 That's actually an awesome detail, but it would be more accurate if the horses were geldings. Humans rarely ride stallions since the beginning of time. 95% of all male horses are gelded. Training stallions to do anything but gallop straight is significantly more difficult compared to geldings and mares.

      IMO the horse is lucky the 'gator didn't get a good grip.

      I don't think the gator was trying to make a meal out of that stallion, that's why he let go. He had the horses left leg in his mouth for a second. Just a defending warning bite.

Yes it can wound the horse greatly by biting its leg but one single stomp that doesn’t even use all of the horse’s energy has enough horsepower to kill most animals, including the alligator. The horse was not lucky, he can kill the alligator with a single kick. The alligator was smart to back away.

      alabamian local here, biggest recorded gator found in this state, they're real sweet and super docile for crocodilians
      they just wanna sunbathe and eat about once a week, if you hate them or don't have empathy for them that's not because you live with them, it's because you just hate gators

    The alligator grabbed the horse's foot, causing it to rise into the air from the grip, but was then kicked by the other foot and probably is not injured, nor the horse. But the horse didn't come back for more. A stalemate

      No way! That alligator got seriously injured. Did you see how he crawled away? They are able to get up on all fours and run. He couldn't even pick his head up. I think that gator suffered broken bones and possibly internal bleeding. He probably died that same day or within a few days at most.

      @@andreykashin1729 I had to rewatch it a few times, as the end of the gator's snout looks off after the scuffle. The horse might have broken the gator's jaw during the bite.
      A horse can strike like a gunshot with those back legs, and they strike full force regardless of the target's distance. Also, the full weight of a horse (this healthy guy must be around 900lbs) coming down on a single hoof would be akin to getting shot with a cannon ball. We're talking thousands of pounds of force.
      I certainly worry about the bite, as bacteria could take down even a healthy boy like that, but if the gator didn't break the skin then the horse is off scott free for sure.

    If you slow down and pause the video, you can see that absolutely nothing happened to the alligator. The horse tries to stomp on his head but the alligator actually bites down on the horses front 2 legs, and as the horse gallops back up that lifts the alligator off the ground and then he releases the horse from his jaws. If anything, that horse had his legs shredded.

The horse would of been limping had it gotten bit. The alligator looked like it had a broken sternum, he wasn't lifting himself up on front legs, as he left

    For everyone wondering:
    The horse is most likely the leader of the herd, or dominant gelding/stallion, he moved there because he saw the alligator as a threat and watched it for a short time. The alligator was either very hungry or young and stupid.
    Because that horse was going to attack it for being so close to the herd and actually warned it. When the alligator didn't back off he attacked it and it was extremely lucky considering how badly it could’ve been injured.

    The horses are wild and the horse who attacked the gator is the lead stallion meaning he would protect the herd even if the gator didn’t do anything to the herd by all means since he wanted to make sure his mares and offspring is safe if that makes any sense

Nature is survival of the fittest and no one questioned the gators motives of just prowling there looking for an opportunity to grab a horse for lunch.
