Dogs chase brumbies and dog gets trampled. These brumbies run around when the other herd leaves

  • A detailed video of the trampling - • Dog trampled by brumby...
The dog learnt his lesson - • Dog encounters brumby ...
I know I didn't have control over my dog and I'm not proud of that fact. He is under much tighter control and goes on a chain when I am doing things with the brumbies. He comes when he is called - mostly. He's a work in progress.
These horses run around like this every evening when the other herd moves down the property (not the dogs). The other herd has a run of 160 acres, but spends quite a bit of time up with these horses and the humans.
I did try to call the dog when he started chasing the horses, he ignored me, so I filmed him.
It was not ideal and I knew I'd cop criticism, but I decided to film it. That dog was so naughty and wouldn't listen to me, now he doesn't chase the horses. So we were all lucky all round. Horses do not hurt more than needed, they just wanted to get him to stop.
As to the hateful comments, is this ideal? NO. I hadn't owned him long and he's learning fast. He is a giant puppy and he is listening now. So not bad considering I'm the 6th owner he's had in less than 12 months. It takes time to train and dog, especially to come when called. The other dog that joined in the chase ordinarily would not do that, and he is not my dog and he hasn't done it since. Neither has my dog.
In response to a lot of the comments giving critical - but accurate feedback on my lack of responsibility as an owner:
A lot of lessons are learnt the hard way. For e.g. I knew grass clippings were bad for horses - intellectually I knew - someone dumped a wheel barrow of grass clippings into my horses paddock and 40 hours later our yearling had a perforated stomach and we put her to sleep as she was in agony and going to die anyway. She died with her head in my lap.
I now "KNOW" that grass clippings are dangerous for horses. It's very easy to become complacent when you're around animals everyday - become relaxed and forget how easily things can turn bad.
That yearlings mother, slipped and fell into a creek and perforated her midline. She got up and walked over to me and her stomach and small intestines fell out, it was horrific - she died with her head in my lap. Bled to death.
This happened after the dog trampling video and I've gotten a lot more safety conscious. There's still things I need to improve around here. But I do hear you! Trust me. And I agree.

Yes, that dog has some nerve being loose on it's property when wild horses want to come eat there. The owner could teach the dog not to chase wild animals on its land much better than the horses did if only would've sat her dog down for an honest talk on safety.

@@OregonSingles those "wild" horses are there all the time. And I'm not sure why you're disagreeing, I simply said that a dog shouldn't be offlead without recall. It's incredibly stupid. Anyone with a dog and an IQ over 20 can tell you that. If you disagree that your dog should come back when called or have basic training, then simply never own a dog.
You've also made a right fool of yourself, considering the owner completely agreed with me on another comment and said it was irresponsible of them, the dog was new but he now has a good recall.

No one said or implied dogs are robots, but they're smart animals capable of being trained very well. Most owners just won't put in the commitment or thing their dog being able to sit is enough. TL;DR at the end.
Shortly after I got my dog, Trip, (then about a year old) he decided to try and come to me (without being asked) while I was the middle of the round pen. Trouble was, I was lunging my gelding at the time. Poor dog was just starting to get used to the horses, and he decides to go right in front of the horse as hes going by, while I'm telling him "Out". Dog gets trampled, and to the horses credit, he tried very hard to not step on him. He got him with one hoof at least and was very probably bruised, but he was perfectly fine a few days later.
Trip will be 8 this year, and he now knows to mind the horses, and immediately gets out of any pen when I tell him "Out", and he never get in the round pen while I'm working a horse lol
TL;DR: my young dog (Trip) got trampled while lunging a horse. Horse tried hard to miss him, and my dog learned what the word "Out" means. Dog is fine and will be 8 this year.

I'm glad everything is well and the dogs do not chase the horses anymore, but I hope you'll work on recall as that is probably the most vital command. I understand the dog had multiple owners, so that relationship was definitely not built yet. I hope you and your spouse are well, sorry to hear about the horse that passed in the description. It's better to research beforehand, but learning from a mistake is certainly more impactful.

    Question:
Why didn't you chase after the dogs if they didn't respond to your calling for them?
And what was it that caused you to whip your recording device out and start filming in spite of the apparent distress that these horses were enduring?
If such a thing happens in the future, how do you expect you will handle it?

    • @letsdiscussitoversometea8479
      @letsdiscussitoversometea8479 Před 3 lety

Well - be that as it may, please can you ensure that you don't let yourself put videoing "out of the ordinary" situations ahead of the horses' (and in the context, the dogs') wellbeing in the future?
I can certainly appreciate someone being unable to outrun a dog that might just run off like a shot, as that's happened to me before (the first - and LAST time I took a friends' dog off its lead the first time I walked it).
As well as this, I can appreciate someone reacting... _unexpectedly,_ to an unusual situation ( poorly yes, certainly not with ill intent).
I don't know the totality of your rationale as to why you made the decision to record this...but irrespective of the other videos that I see that your channel appears to show, this one doesn't cast you in a favourable light.
You could make a video showing how the horses could associate the dogs - and even better, their obedience to you [as far as the horses can associate] with being a positive part of their lives.
It would certainly go a considerable way to reassuring people that the horses don't have to worry about the dogs (believe me, if nothing positive has already been done to address it, those horses will still remember this incident (and react with physiological discomfort) whenever they see the dogs), and that you care about the horses' feelings (no vexation intended).
      Take care.

Looking at 0:10, it can be seen that the white horse tried to scare the dog away, but maybe it was because they were still a little afraid of the dog. After all, the bite of the dog would hurt the horse, so the three horses still Decided to run slowly and let the dog chase them, looking back from time to time to see if the dog was close to catching up to them. Although dogs cannot catch up with horses at the speed, horses will still feel a little tired after being chased by dogs for a long time! Dogs will want to chase something fast when they see it, let alone three beautiful horses that are afraid of dogs. Hopefully they won't wear themselves out with this. 0:58 It seemed that the white horse was a little tired after being chased by the dog, but he was frightened by the sudden trampling by the dog and had to continue running away.
The horses are very beautiful. I don’t know why it’s a bit relaxing to see them being chased by dogs and looking tired. I believe that if the episode hadn’t happened, it would have been a long chase that tested their stamina!

The little brown horse deliberately trampled him to teach him a lesson. He never chased them again. It’s interesting. She didn’t actually harm him in any significant way. One small bruise where her hoof clipped him. They have a lot of control of where they place their hooves.

I had a 85 pound pit that thought it was invincible, and I guess I did too. He was harassing a horse one day and usually the horse would kind of move away from the dog but on this day there was a female horse in heat in a trailer nearby and that male horse was insane because of it. Well I think you know where this story is going. One swat from one hind leg and the indestructible, massive head of my pit was transformed into mashed potatoes. He kept trying to breath but his sinus cavity was completely collapsed so I had to do the merciful thing, he was brain dead anyway.
