My late father actually attended the same high school as Haku back in Tongatapu. I remember my father telling me he was very tough, even back then. My father was really surprised & excited to see him on tv wrestling back in the wcw days. Now my son loves watching his classic matches that I watched as a kid with my old man 😇 #ofalahiatutonga
His sons are wrestling now, Tama Tonga, and Tanga Loa, are part of the bloodline witn Solo Sikoa
I do believe Haku is what he appears to be in and out of the ring. A tough fighter in all aspects of the fight game..

One of Huku's greatest attributes was his personality. Just a loving man who wanted to feed his family. He never once abused his reputation in the locker room to bully or advance himself as other wrestlers did. He helped put quite a few wrestlers "over" when he could have easily said no. He's a true class act.

Ripping off people's ears, pulling out their eyeballs and smashing them, eating their noses straight off their faces, biting off their tongues, ripping out their teeth with his bare hands, but he's a real gentle, nice, class act of a guy. Totally trust leaving him around your wife and kids, so long as she doesn't give attitude and the kids don't get his temper flaring 😂
Sounds like he was a bully. I doubt a man that powerful needs to rip ears and eyes out when fighting drunk idiots. Not that their behaviour was ok but it sounds like he enjoyed hurting people which is not an admirable trait.

Met him personally in Puerto Rico.If you look at him from the side his chest looked like he had a gun safe in between his arms...smashed 2 guys in a bar fight here and when the cops came he got into it with them too,six cops wound up in the hospital and he landed up in jail...guy was a beast when provoked but one of the sweetest dudes i have ever met.

Haku is easily top 10 most underated wrestlers of all time. His size ,speed , athleticism and skills inside the ring were phenomenal. They definitely dont make them like that anymore. Todays wrestlers really suck compared to the golden era
Unfortunately, none of those attributes mattered back then. The 2 most famous wrestlers back then were Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
Tonga reminds me of a huge Samoan I worked doors with in some of the busiest and toughest clubs in STL. This guy was easily 400+lbs and he would sit just inside the doors out of view. If fellas really gave us a hard time or tried to rush the clubs doors, we'd knock on the glass and this monster would stand in the door and just start chucking people out into the street. On the flip side he was super gentle and genuinely loved his friends. I think this mentality is just natural for the Samoan folks. Gentle and very caring until provoked.

They are like the human manifestation or personification of bulls/cows. Big, powerful, and generally placid and gentle until provoked and start seeing red.
I worked with a massive Tongan guy on the door of a nightclub I was half his size but people always picked him. I believe that most guys take kindness calmness for weakness. Good times watching him light em up like a machine gun.

I'm glad this video touches on Tonga's kindness. In Bret Hart's book, he tells how Tonga took him under his wing and looked out for him in his early days in the business. He was in awe of how strong and tough Tonga was but, he was kind in equal measure.

Yeah, Barbarian is a Tongan as well, and he says Haku was a cut above. Rikishi also (and also another man no-one wanted to mess with.)
Polynesians are typically very big and strong people but also very friendly and kind hearted at the same time. The kinds of people who will go out of their way to help people but they also aren't the ones you would wanna mess with. If a Tongan/Samoan/Fijian/etc are trying to de escalate a situation over and over again, and keep giving you outs, than it's best to not push them any further because it's very likely going to end up bad, and not for the Polynesian. I wanna meet more of my Tongan family and possibly go out to the Islands they currently inhabit (Fiji last I heard). I'm 1/8 Tongan and have no clue about that side of my family. I can't vouch for this, as I don't have any proof or knowledge on the subject, but supposedly I come from Royalty out there and would be treated well if we (me and my mom) went out there. I don't know if it's true or not so I'm not gunna try to act like it means anything. I dont know if the culture is one of those types of cultures that has many royal people and every other dude in a prince or not.

Haku once chewed up a bowling ball and spit out 300 rounds of .50 caliber bullets. Just enough to take out last platoon of nazis and that's how we won WW2? Just ask Larry Zbyszko and Dory Funk Jr. We were all in the same unit. I saw it, i was there!

@@mattlegg1976 On a bus in the mid-80's. There's nuance in this story though. André said a racist word, Bad News took offence and demanded the bus stop. Some thought Bad News might have a knife, some thought a gun; André refused to get off. The bus started back up, but Bad News stewed on it. At the hotel later he confronted André. André apologised and knew he was in the wrong, and the situation was sorted out, there was no more heat. Now, André might have been wary of Bad News at this point, or he may have known he was wrong, full stop and not wanted to defend himself from a bad position. But this was the 80's and André was physically close to being finished (walking was difficult), he had constant/chronic joint pain, just from sitting which is why he self-medicated with wine every day. Bad News himself had bad knees at this point. So both parties not exactly prime; even so, I think it was around this time that Blackjack Mulligan tried to test André (on a Japanese trip) in a less heated but still very physical confrontation in a fight, and was tossed around fairly easily from eye-witnesses accounts: a 22 stone man, 6'6" or so.

Hi Matt, Another great video about Tonga. I worked in Security with a Guy from Samoa, 6ft 5" 22st Gentle Giant, 1st time I met him he picked me up and put me on his shoulder and I was 18st 😂 incredibly strong, incredibly nice guy, and we became incredibly good friends. The Polynesian people are a very gentle race ❤ but all have Warrior Blood in Battle.

There are only around 2.5 Million Polynesians in total (men/women/children) on the planet.

I actually know a lot about this guy. He (and another monster pro wrestler called The Barbarian) were sent to Japan by the King of Tonga to become sumo. Of course, they were teenagers and about 140lbs, so they fattened an bulked em up, and they earned black belts in three different disciplines. Hakus thing wasnt just strength or fighting ability, but he would bite off noses, or ears, and gouge out eyes. One cop was quoted as saying 'Im 275lbs and he threw me across the bar like a ragdoll'. Haku was 310lbs in his prime and could do a helicopter kick like Van Damme. Dangerous man.

All the older cops knew Haku and knew to not put hands on him, bc eventually he'd calm down, and his back was so wide you could not cuff him in the back..but one rookie wanted to try to manhandle him and cuff him. Haku threw him over his car, breaking his collarbone, then picked up the cuffs, cuffed himself in the front and sat down in the back of the car. He would always beg people not to mess with him, he'd say 'please brudda, its all love. I dont want no trouble", but ppl took that as weakness and learned the hard way.
The Warlord also said that while Meng's reputation as the toughest guy was safe, he'd place the Barbarian right behind him. And he's actually a really nice guy like Meng as well. Those island guys are just built different.

Big fan of Haku. Glad you finally covered him. Apparently the fight he had against five marines - according to Rick Steiner went like this: "When the fight began, he dropped all 5 marines on the floor, and basically the fight was over before it even got started".
Tank Abbott (former UFC championship contender), who went over to pro wrestling. "Meng's Meng. He is what he is. Nobodys' going to argue with him from what I understand".
Oh - and the 275 Ibs police officer that Haku threw across the bar? He was a former linebacker. Somebody very hard to throw around, and it was his own testimony that Haku threw him across the bar like he was nothing.
Arn Anderson on Meng/Haku. "In his prime - he would have been the world UFC champion. And he'd have no contenders."

I played rugby union as a fly half weighing in at 100kgs and 6' 3" in Melbourne, Australia against a whole team of Tongans. Hahaha, they were, to a man, like blocks of fast moving concrete reinforced with loads of steel rebar. So so strong. I'd come from a rugby league background which helped me a lot with being able to absorb their hits and with my tackling (which was always around the ankles as they were so solid and I wanted to survive the match.) Qudos to all Tongans. Lovely off the field after the game. Shared a cuppa and a cake, prepared by Tongan women associated with the players. But on the field, ferocious, strong, fast and solid. Reminds me how Jonah Lomu changed rugby union with his sheer physicality. Sub 11 seconds for the 100 meters; 6 ft 5 inches and 18 plus stones. Loads of footage of him ploughing through international teams and going over the try line with 3 guys clinging on to him. All this while suffering a kidney condition that eventually killed him way too young. He probably never took the field 100% fit but is still an icon.

This kinda describes a lot of the Tongans I’ve known. So unbelievably chill and generous with a great sense of humor. None had a short fuse, but if that fuse ran down it was real trouble. Really scary. They did security at some underground clubs I went to. Best security ever.
Some of the wrestlers got into a bar fight and Tonga got involved. He was just trying to help. In the process of trying to help, the police came and hancuffed Tonga behind his back. They then maced him in the face. He took a deep breath, inhaled the mace and then snapped the handcuffs from behind his back. Another time, Tonga was in a bar in Montreal with his manager. 2 guys went up to Tonga for a fight. He grabbed them both by the throat, kicked one in the face, then kicked the other in the face, knocking them both out. The bouncers then came in, and Tonga's manager, who knew the owner of the bar, told the owner to keep his bouncers back, otherwise they're dead. He kept them back.
Those tongans/samoans are so naturally strong and I think their bone density is like twice that of the normal person.

Yeh it’s crazy genetics. Played rugby league against them in Sydney my whole life, some can’t be knocked out think mark hunt or David tua . Very big boys but with speed and athleticism. You don’t want to have a stink with blokes like that. Generally very lovely people with a sharing family culture.

Being Polynesian myself, I've grown up with Uncle's & a father like the Legendary Haku. Very hardworking, kind & generous people. Just don't piss them off. I've witnessed many times that there is no off switch once they're in that rage & you better pray to God & stay out of sight. Like you said, it's that Warrior inside our blood. Mahalo
Please let me know what you think of my theory: I believe that in addition to the genetic factors listed in the video that the people of Polynesia have an increased ability to tap into the animalistic (beyond sport) "war mentality" that because of the Haka being trained and practiced since childhood. This trains the person to almost instantly be able to find that part of themselves that many Westerners are trained to suppress and may have never tapped into before no matter how angry they have been. Having this in your toolbox against an adversary on the street is a game changer.

There are countless interviews on here from various wrestlers saying how crazy tough this man is (I’ve probably seen most of them lol) and I have no doubt the stories are legit. Haku was one of my faves way back, he and Andre as the Colossal Connection. Haku started out as a rugby player and then went to Japan; learned Sumo, learned catch wrestling and striking martial arts. The Barbarian was a fellow Tongan (a person with also exceptionally thick bones/joints) and known as one of the strongest wrestlers back in the day, and he says that Haku was stronger, his strength was just supreme. Haku had great mobility too, not even just for a 21 stone man, but full stop, if you hear stories of his kicks and flexibility. The total package.
That's right. Barbarian was another super tough wrestler.

I've been all over the world, and to this day, I have never met a "weak" person from the Pacific Islands. I honestly don't know what it is, I was in the Marines with probably the only skinny guy from Samoa and for a short skinny kid, he was an absolute monster if you ever crossed him. For the life of me I can't imagine sitting in a bar, seeing Haiku walk in, and me say I'm going to start something with that guy! Rikishi was probably marketed as the most "fun loving" of that dynasty and you can watch his matches and honesty see he could seriously hurt anyone around him at any given time!

SBW was silly enough to want to fight him , didn't end well for Billy .
Mark (allegedly) had an entire security company trying to contain him the night before his fight in Melbourne a few years back. A cop was able to negotiate a truce between them, but he was apparently just knocking guys out left, right and centre and they were running out of guys to call up, with some seriously heavy dudes on the way. This crew weren't lightweights and it's no mark on them, excuse the pun, as a fight ready walk-off knockout artist must be a terrifying thing to try and contain. Full credit to anyone who stepped to him, as they'd have known their fate was all but sealed.

Over and over I hear about these great fighters and back in the day I attended a couple of Gary Spiers seminars in Liverpool, and nearly all of them come across as gentlemen, the opposite of bullys unless you are silly enough to push them too far! As a young man in my mid-teens, I was always fighting until I started learning martial arts, pretty soon after starting training I stopped fighting in the street.I analyzed this and came to the conclusion that previously I was not confident in myself and was constantly trying to prove my "Manhood", childish really but after I started training I realised how much I could get hurt or how much I could hurt someone else. My confidence in myself grew, and my first instructor made a point of teaching that a major reason to learn martial arts was to become a better member of society. I am now 70 years old, still training a bit and in the 50 years since starting training, I have only fought outside the ring twice, both acting in self-defense and both ending very quickly! 😀
Meng is a legend of the sport. He used to watch the younger guys in opening matches, from the gorilla position, then give them tips back in the dressing room. He was far from a bully. He laid his chops in snug, but he never took liberties with anyone. He never hurt anyone in the ring. Bret Hart called Meng "an outstanding wrestler". Coming from Bret Hart, that is high praise indeed. Meng was no fool either. He was multilingual, speaking English, French and Japanese. There is so much more to this fine man than violence and drinking stories. If he was respected and left alone, he was an absolute gentleman.

I got an uncle that was like a real life Jake the muss back in the day, real chill guy until someone fucked with him. I heard a story about him when he was in prison putting a massive gang member from the most notorious gang in nz in icu all because he stole his apple

The Islanders from Samoa Fiji and Tonga not to mention the Maori are simply unbelievable genetically blessed people. As a community, humble respectful kind and warm. As you say though only a fool messes with them. Stand amongst a couple of the big lads and as a normally big bloke I feel like a kid! I love how you cover these guys that are quickly being forgotten by the modern world of mma , it's kind of funny how as the world changes with more and more privileges people rate someone as being tougher than those who paved the road for them to even be tough at all. I personally knew a friend of my father that was in the special forces in the Vietnam War whom did three tours there and he reminds me of Tonga. He came home from the war and experienced many of the same kind of altercations because he was so used to War, he never lost and his stories are very much the same but without the fame.
Yeah I imagine he was forever changed after going through that war.

This is why i love your channel Matt, you do all your research and give us some great videos about people we would have never really known too much about. I remember him as a wrestler, but the WWE never promoted him much , he was always a gatekeeper for the big names like a hogan, Machoman savage etc... some of those story's you mentioned were crazy lol.

Lived beside him and his young son in Woodbridge New Jersey mid 80s. Very quiet, very to himself laying pool side in the complex as we kids played in the water, Pedro Morales Jr (RIP) and couple of other wrestlers kids, in the complex. He was a gentleman giant regardless of this tough guy reputation (which we didn't know about back then as kids). A good man, never seen a hint of anger out of him ever.

I have just found this channel and really like the presenting style. It feels like we have stopped on a dog walk and you’re just telling me something I need to know. I was in New Zealand 🇳🇿 and I saw a doorman stop three blokes from causing trouble he dropped one had his foot on his neck had a second one in a headlock and was talking to the third one, it was the most impressive calm thing I had seen. I was speaking to the doorman just before and he went over and sorted it out. The Pacific Islanders are something else, man mountains and I have never seen anyone like them. But they are great people to chat to. I can’t believe anyone would be nuts enough to give them trouble.

Hi Matt , i am new to the channel and whilst finding it by accident i have subscribed . Although not a fighter i do find the subject matter really interesting and after watching numerous videos on your channel one thing i can say is that you conduct yourself in a great manner and i really enjoy the honesty and passion you show. I find it amazing the honour , respect and courage shown by just about everyone one in your reports and what amazing Gentlemen in a day and age of weapons etc. My dad onced clipped me around the ear many years ago as i used my feet in a scrap once as a kid and jeez it was a good earbashing. Respect is what it taught me and your videos really show it in abundance

I grew up in a town being able to go into bars as a teenager because of who my dad was. Dudes would always buy me drinks just for being my dad's son. I grew up fighting a lot just like my father mind you my dad's a much bigger man than I was. He always told me to fight smart an to becarful because I was small. I won some and lost some fights but I'll never forget the night I fought a guy way out of my league. He was much bigger and stronger than me and basically gave me the beating of my life. It took me almost a month to recover fully. I was in so much pain id cry to sleep after work because my body hurt so bad. I consider my self a tough dude but there is some guys out there that are monsters and if you fight long enough you'll meet one

I used to workout at the same gym as Tonga (1999/2000s). He was the nicest guy. He would spend 30 mins just saying hi to everyone . Amazing guy
I take a lot of it with a pinch of salt (not to say he wasn't an animal) but this guy and those islanders are where the phrase 'he is built differently' stems from. Incredible bone density and real thickly built. Huge heads sat on short thick necks with massive traps built to absorb huge amounts of impact. Its no wonder they make for such good Rugby players & their fighters tend to have such good chins even if limited.

I believe Rick Flair actually mentioned Harley Race as being the toughest, the one who would’ve been ufc champ with no training back in those days… he spoke about a few eye pulling out stories of Harley while he was on the Joe Rogan podcast recently! mentioned Haku as well. Harley seems to have been a tough crazy mofo too
I knew a man yrs ago Eddie. Out of respect I won't mention his last name. Half Irish half Samoan and living in NZ and Australia. He got into a fight with the Hells Angels (NZ)and got beaten near to death. In hospital he plotted his revenge. He watched their clubhouse and waited until they were all partied out. He went through them with a baseball bat and a chain. He went home and got a shotgun and waited. They arrived and the leader stepped forward and said words to the effect, warrior move, no debt and rode off. So many stories of his bar fights (and fights on the rugby football field). The cops wouldn't go near him on the Gold Coast. He lived by the gun and sadly died by the gun.

My uncle was a pro wrestler who travelled Europe with traveling folks, his mates always got into fights, but he'd go around the local places and ask if they needed a strong pair of hands until they moved on, he said he had way less bar brawls and got looked after by locals, i.e. food, places to stay etc

In the late 70s I knew a Samoan man in the Air Force who was a big person. What I remember most about him was that he was always easy to get along with, he was a bit quiet but always friendly and easy to talk to, and he never seemed to involve himself in any gossip that us other idiots did. I hope Ed Milo is still around and doing well.

I'm 6'6" 270lbs and when I met Tonga the last thing he wanted to do was fight me. Full disclosure it was the early 80s (or late 70s) and I was in elementary school at the time in Lakeland Florida (next to Tampa, that was really big in pro wrestling). He was dating a step relative of mine at the time and was at my house for a Christmas party. He had these "special" grippers that noone else could close. He closed them with ease. In my 30s inspired by this memory, I bought Captains of Crush grippers and now in my early 50s I still use them and have a better grip than most. My memory of him is a good one. He was humble and friendly and made a great impression on the kid me. If I ever met him again, the last thing I'd want to do is fight him ( for multiple reasons) but I would love to buy him a beer. No doubt, an interesting guy.

Haku/Meng is a great person as a family man, i remember my mum telling me about him and all the good things he would do for our family and community back in the 90s, and he's got Tongan royalty blood in him like my mum and loved heaps by our huge family in USA, NZ and Australia, thanks for your vid about him and the respect for him too. Everything i see people say or comment about him i can literally say yep that's true, especially his unbelievable talent as a fighter and martial arts, thankyou for giving him his props 👍

What an interesting vlog and topic. I knew Tonga's face from watching the wrestling as a kid but didn't know the hardness of this born fighting man. They say don't "judge a book by it's cover" but I think tonga is both the rule and exception with how he looked crazy but was a decent man before he was annoyed or encouraged to fight. I remember an interview with Bill Goldberg some years ago, the interviewer asked him who the strongest and toughest guy he ever wrestled and knew, Bill didn't even hesitate for a second and replied "Meng".

Tongans are very powerful people…In 1986 Wales rugby team played a test match there. Tongan prop, Tevita Bloomfield, singlehanded had a punch up with the Welsh team which also contained a lot of hard nuts… the result was two Welsh players being knocked out and Bloomfield beating up half the Welsh team…true story

I shared a conex with a personal security detail made up of a bunch of Samoans, when I was in Iraq. Some of the most dangerous people I knew were very wary around those guys. One marine said he heard them laughing during a firefight as they were putting holes in bad guys who were shooting back.
That's some 80s action movies stuff. They were pretty nice to me though...

I still havent really heard of a guy who could beat Tonga in his prime in a street fight.. Some of the other legit tough wrestlers are The Barbarian, Harley Race, Steve Williams and Ron Simmons but Tongas toughness and animal strength puts him in a class of his own
