I don’t mind cheap and cheerful camping kit but a leaking tent is a definite dealbreaker.
I replaced my last tent after it leaked. It had served me very well for a number of years (I reckon maybe twenty weekends in it and I paid about £60 or £70 for it), but only about a year after re-waterproofing it, a weekend of really heavy rain last October proved too much, so went for something bigger with a higher HH. Although I've only used it once so far, I should be using it at least four more weekends this summer plus taking out my lightweight wild camping tent (also only used once so far) a few times, too.
Five stars for something that leaks and a material that allows for easy condensation. Three stars at best.

Thanks for this, Ben. You said something I've tried getting people to understand... it's not always about having the best, most expensive gear. It's about going out with what you have and can afford and having fun. If you can afford all the expensive gear, GREAT! If you can't, don't be ashamed, just get what you can and enjoy as long as you're safe. And I had several laughs in there, so no worries...some of us understood the humor 😂

Agreed but it's not even about being ashamed. Some people can afford expensive stuff, some people buy it just to show the world they've got expensive stuff and others buy it because of good marketing. As for me I'm happy in my lanshan and Vango hydra. Two very decent tents (imo) for less than £350. It's a no brainer.
Exactly right. Most of my gear I bought is well under 100 and most under 50. With 4 notable exceptions…. Sleeping bag, tent, backpack, and sleeping pad. I bought all when on mandatory overtime and figured the extra money would be useful in it
Pop-up tents are great. Chuck a tarp over the top during rain. So fast to set up and take down. Then to dry before packing away.

I used a very similar tent for a music festival once, and for that specific experience, it was quite suitable. Summer temperatures, packed campgrounds where a small tent is at a massive advantage in securing a spot, very little time spent sleeping and, let’s be honest, most people in a state of inebriation that produces a general disregard for hygiene, comfort and the concept of tomorrow.
I’d never in a million years recommend it for *actual* camping though. This kind of tent is the outdoor version of crashing in someone’s armchair at house party. You need to be drunk, exhausted and under 30 to tolerate it.
I bought a similar tent in 2008 for a week-long trip to Le Mans. We drove there in a small sports car so the size when packed was a plus. First few nights I was waking up in the middle of the night with my heart racing, feeling like I was having a panic attack. Unlike the one you got, mine was end-opening and only had one vent, which it turned out wasn't big enough to provide fresh air and I was basically suffocating every time I was in there for more than a few hours with the door shut. Thankfully the weather was good that week so I just cut a few extra speed holes and all was ok in the end. But the moral of the story - make sure any tent you buy has decent ventilation. And don't camp for a week in a tent the size of a coffin...

@@FLMKane I'm going to try and answer this from memory without googling! I think it was Audi. If I remember correctly, Peugeot were the fastest lap for lap, but had a lot of issues with the three cars so finished quite far behind. I was there another year, possibly 2010, where all of the Peugeots had engine failures but I'm sure they at least finished in 2008.
I'm going to go google it now and see how good my memory is!
@@FLMKane Ah I was nearly right. Audi won, with the #7 Peugeot also finishing on the lead lap, though too far back to challenge for the victory. Peugeot #9 completed the podium, a few laps down. So I was pretty close.
Not bad recall for a race I watched 16 years ago while partially oxygen deprived!
And it was indeed 2010 where all three Peugeots retired with engine failures.
"Camping is supposed to be fun" - I felt deep. I convinced a buddy to go out with me last year and we actually took the time to...wait for it...build a campfire! I couldn't remember the last time I built a campfire I had gotten so caught up in the "how can I hike X miles in Y days" mental rat race. I had such a good time and it was SUCH an important lesson for me. In 2 days I will be leaving work earlier to go camp over night. It won't be a cool hike. It will be at a pretty small state park. It will just be an evening with no TV sitting in front of a campfire...and I am SO looking forward to it. We need more people speaking this message: this is supposed to be fun!!!

It's true of literally every hobby i've ever tried. The way to ruin "relaxation" is to turn it into "work". Comparison is a great way to ruin practically anything.

What i discovered is that camping can be a an exhausting activity. This year we have been using spring up tents, refusing to go more than 10 meters from the car to setup. No campfire just a gas cooker. When we wake up we r still fresh and then we hike up the hills
Well said Ben, you hit the nail on the head. Too many people think walking and camping is about having all the expensive labels, but it's about getting out there and enjoying it.
Those who don't care about wearing the most expensive brands and having the latest, most expensive tents are the ones who get the most enjoyment from their gear and probably walk further/more often than those who simply use their gear as a fashion accessory.

You don't need the best, most expensive stuff, but spending a bit more on some decent quality gear will prevent a lot of headaches later and give you the peace of mind that's needed to actually enjoy yourself outdoors. There's no point spending 30 bucks or whatever on a shitty tent if you're just going to be wet and miserable, and out 30 bucks for a product that won't even protect you from the elements. You're better off spending a bit more to get something better.
Also, most people who regularly do huge trips in the backcountry generally do spend more on gear, as the gear needed for long backpacking treks in gonna be lighter/more durable than cheap shit, so you're wrong about that.
If it does the job use it. I have a sleeping bag that I have used for 30 years.
It's still warm and cozy so I don't need to waste money on a new one just because it has a fancy label.
Errrr you don't need the most expensive kit you can get half decent tent for a few tenners more you can pick up a half decent tent for around 70 quid that won't leak I have tents up in the 400 region but the one I use the most is my little stealth tent that cost me 80.

There are campground that do not let you sleep in your vehicle unless it is an RV or camper. One of these would be perfect a decoy.

Had one like this when i was about 16 and used it for about 4-5 years.
It did a festival or two. Also used a couple of times clipped to my kyak and chuck it up to put gear in if raining whilst me and a mate set up the tarp. Rubbish but i had such fond memories of it. Still camping out in the wild nearly 25 years later.
Leaky tents are definite dealbreakers.
I love any videos which encourage people to try wild camping... Which also show that you don't need to spend £1000 quid on a Helleberg for your first camp to get out and enjoy yourself.

I have a Night Cat 1 person tent that is a pop up similar to this one, but it is actually quite well made, doesn't leak at all, and does really good in the wind. Plus it is super quick and easy to put up and take down. Packing it up is actually quite easy once you learn the proper technique. It's just twisting it into 2 figure 8s pretty much. It also can be used as a cot tent. Which is pretty cool. So if you want one of these that is actually dependable and still affordable then go with the Night Cat version. Or any of their tents, I have several and they are all great for the money, all of their stuff is really. 😊

I use one of these popup tents at the beach. They provide a wonderful refuge from wind but only partially block sunlight. For shade I put a tarp over it and it is the best tent ever for the beach
Many years ago we had the original Decathlon pop-up, and the second version. The original was excellent, the 2nd version was a playtent ... Still enjoyed them both.
If they advertised these things as "play tents" or "summer garden tents" there wouldn't be so much of an issue.
It is the claiming that they are fit for actual pursuits outside of your house that rankles.
Props for going out there on such a "gusty" day as well. :D

Good video. I've always camped with as little gear as I can manage, so I appreciate your comments - it's about having fun! Which does not include getting wet. Any tent I've bought I get seam sealer and go over every seam inside and out. I stake my tent at the spot least likely to have pooling. I prepare the spot by piling duff where it's thin and smoothing it where it mounds. I use a ground cloth under the tent. And I use a rain fly. Easily obtained at thrift shops. Even the cheapest tent, treated with a bit of care, will do well enough.
Nothing some Sealer and a cheap backup tarp won't cure .. and it's paid for.
You could get that tent watertight with some seam sealer and Fabsil. I like that you had a go anyway, the tent would suit a short person like me - as you point out, it’s not about high end gear all the time, for low level summer camping that little tent will do 👍🏻🙂

I bought a 4 man tent for a camping trip a few years ago. Our motorhome was in for some warranty work and we were due to meet up with some German friends in Wales. The tent was mid range in price but on the first rainy night the same thing happened. Water began leaking through the seams. Apparently this is common on new tents. I was advised to errect the tent on a dry day and spray the seams with fabric waterproof spray. I used a cheap spray from Aldi. The tent was later used by friends in Devon. There was a huge storm one night. They slept in the car as they thought the tent would blow away. Next morning the tent was still there and the inside was dry as a bone.
Or could have saved yourself tons of money and hassle and bought surplus

@@Yeti62BN27 Ahhh. I see. There's probably a lot more of it in the US. Not so much here in the UK . You don't seem to see it marketed as much over here. It's probably out there somewhere no doubt but not on the US scale. We have an old airfield down the road that sells military equipment but it's mainly vehicles ie fire engines and road sweepers. I remember spraying a landrover that belonged to a friend. He bought the paint from there. Turned out to be anti glare green missile paint. Looked great when done.

i used this tent (quechua branded) for years before got my campervan - getting to a park-up in the Highlands late on a Friday night and nice and cosy in about 10 minutes. up early in the morning, pack up and away up a hill in about 20 minutes inc coffee. no I wouldn't use it up a hill - it's heavy and not portable but I have 'proper' mountain tents for that - it's withstood heavy snow and rain and gales without letting me down. you don't need a hilleberg black label to sleep in layby next to your car

I used one once...it let loads of rain in, but weirdly, none of it out, so at the end of the weekend i had my own indoor pool as well.
Looks like a good tent for 'in-door' camping for two small kids. Pretending to be exploring the desert or something. I'm not actually taking the piss.

I was homeless for a while earlier this year and the only tent I could afford and was able to use where I was staying was something similar to this (though not a pop-up one.) One of the rods was already broken from an earlier camping trip - its only prior use - during which a drunkard fell on me in the night. They're great for a couple nights camping with mates in the summer if you don't camp often, but the lack of any weatherproofing at all wasn't nice for extended use in the Winter.

My GM at work let me lock my bike in the delivery area to prevent theft and let me use the washing machine, and another manager paid for a hotel at one point and printed off loads of free food vouchers for me, though I never used them as I felt bad. Still, the generosity and kindness of all my coworkers kept me going after a year living with a very toxic individual, and now I'm finally thriving - I've even got savings for the first time in my life.
Doesn't save how crap that tent was. It was binned as soon as I got the flat and I'll be buying a decent one next time I go camping.

Any crappy tent can be acceptable if you install it on a tarp, and suspend a tarp over it. Fix your camping with 20$ worth of cheap tarp, and some rope!
And basically if you have more tarp you can consider setting up a stove, making it into an hot-ish tent

we gave up family camping about 20 years ago and bought a caravan after our tent was destroyed by the wind on the isle of skye, it was one of the massive vango diablo family tents, but that was the 2nd or third time it had almost blown away. but a group of friends arranged a long weekend camping in silverdale about 12 years ago, didnt want to take the van so we bought a 4 person pop up tent from decathlon, cost us about £90. We woke up after second night after a great nights sleep, to find the rest of the site in complete carnage, due to the wind overnight. Ours was almost the only tent left standing. we think its due to the flexibility of the fibreglass loops it uses as poles. So the one you tested might not have been much good in the rain, but I suspect it wouldnt be too bad in the wind
single layer tent seem to be quite deep in the "not recommended unless there is 0 chance of rain" territory. i have a pop-up tent from Decathlon and i can guaratee you that i will be first to set up and first to pack up compared to most traditional tents. so that concept isn't bad if its done well. it does take up quite a bit of space so its for car camping only. it stays bone dry, even it rains so much the camping ground is essentially a puddle.

Bought a similar tent but not for camping i have tents(not expensive ones Go outdoors products) for that, i use this pop up for spray painting my vespa/lambretta parts as i can zip it up and let the parts dry over night other than that its ok for kids on the beach to get out of the sun

I had one of these for a cheap-and-cheerful motorcycle camping trip. I'd seen similar reviews about the waterrproof/condensation issue and so took a tarp with me. It did rain on me, although did ok given one night it rained quite hard, but to help it out I strung the tarp from my bike, over the top of it with a couple of pole and then pegged down and it did the job. My other complaint was that it was only just big enough for me. I'm just under 6" and my feet were touching the end, which wasn't great. But it had cost £14 and was nice and light.
But if I was doing super-minimal camping I'd go for the bivvy-tent. The only thing these pop-ups have going for them is the set-up speed and cost.
I was thinking bout something like this, but with a tarp over it. Keeps you protected from the bugs and the elements and is way cheaper

If you expect rain carrying a light Plastic sheet/tarp and some bungees and put that over the top in a way to get the rain to flow off and away from your tent. Yes that is a tent since it does allow you to sleep in it and does provide a cover overhead. Also you can use scotchguard and spray the outside of the tent before you go out camping.
I mean, I'm 5' and 100 lbs so I can't pack much weight when my dog and I go backpacking, so I'm generally perfectly happy with a couple tarps and a mummy bag, or a single tarp, a hammock and mummy bag, so this would be fancy digs for us even in the snow. I don't remember the last time I could use a real tent. 😂
Although between her claws and my fussy sleeping the tent might not have survived the night! And if it's going to be below freezing or snowing, leaks are a no-go for me. I'd rather be in the trees.
Cool review! If it's cheap it's to be expected, if anything it might be something to teach budget minded people to a couple tarps as a canopy and one to place under the tent. Good for sleeping in only, not good for rain, bigger and better tents exist but may be pricier and harder to set up.

I use the 3 person "Pinical" 🌮/⛺️ with a Coleman self inflating queen. I don't even bother to stake it down. Set up time is about 11 seconds 😅 Considering one of the 6 person "OutdoorProduct" instant pop-up ⛺️ 🤔

Its plenty big enough for solo use and would be fine for 2 smaller people on a walk. Im 6.3 and around 103 kg so probably wouldn't want to share. I wonder how you would go heavily spraying it with a silicone waterproof spray.

I've used some cheap tents. The worst was a pop-up. I got soaked!😂 To be fair, I did share it with a large border collie. 😊

I bought a pop up tent 17 years ago from spain for 15 euros and i still use it to this day. No leaks
I got a two piece tent for like 70€. It only has one supporting arch. The setting up only takes like 5-10 minutes. The other layer keeps the water out while the inner layer is made from insects mesh which let the air in but none of the uninvited guests.
Its the Cardova 1 from Grand Canyon if someone is interested getting one themselves.
if it had a good air circulation while having no leak, it might be a good emergency tent since its pretty compact. Sadly, it looks like it will stay as "kids first time camping" indoors type of tent.
I have a pop up tent that was quite cheap, it's like a pyramid style. It looks rather stupid but I've used it for 2 5-day trips so far and it works well enough. I wish I bought something a bit better though, but I won't throw this one out when it works still. It was advertised as 2 person tent but with bags it barely fits me at an angle. One thing that I really dislike about camping is that my back is very bad so sleeping on the ground makes me miserable for the entire event but im already at the limit of what I can bring to that event as one person so I can't bring a mattress or a foam roll or anything like that. Sucks because with current prices this is the only option really for accomodation. And the cheaper apartments are always permanently reserved for people that go every year to the same place.

I couldn’t imagine comfortably setting up camp without one. They protect your floor and offer an extra defense against rain seeping in. Not that it would have saved this ‘tent’.

No tent without a fly is any good, there will be very bad condensation. I use a small cheap tent set up under a tarp over a ridgeline. No fly for really good airflow, my favorite setup.
Water leakage is a big deal. It’s easy to develop hypothermia in your sleep and this could potentially be dangerous for a less prepared camper.
Something that leaks doesn’t matter if you use a light weight tarp or plastic with brass rings to cover it!

It's pretty normal to have to use some seam sealer on tents, even expensive ones, that's a pretty easy fix.
I had a very cheap 20€ tent and it's livable but the rain hits all is bit wet inside it's hard to place it and pack it ,then I got 150€ one bit of an investment but not the most expensive,and the rain is no issue with it easy to place it and pack it definitely worth to invest Abit if planing to hike around more often 😅 but it all depends on the ,,more often,, for it me it can be entire months 🌲🦌
My kids have that tent to play in out bk they roll down the hill inside it and everything lol it's 100% not for camping in the rain. 😂

Personally i go camping to enjoy nature. I do like a larger tent though, but thats cause i like a little extra room.
With all that gas I see why you camp alone! If you gave this a decent water proof spray it might not be too bad for a smaller person. That spray is pretty cheap and I apply it to just about any tent I buy regardless, it's just one extra layer of protection and it works really well but I have completely forgotten what it's called, it's been a while since I used it.
These things are brilliant for a day on the beach, or for a "party" camp. The last thing you want is someone dropping a cigarette on the fjallraven you had to remortgage your house to buy.

Good so far, I need to do more testing with it though. Didn’t get an condensation inside on this trip and it didn’t let any water in at the foot end 👍

Saw hundreds of these at a European heavy metal festival. After a day in a 38°C field drinking warm cider out of a plastic jug, people were crawling into one of these at 3am for 4 hours sleep before the sun came up and cooked them. I've no idea how they survived the 4 days.

These pop-up tents are great for when you go to a music festival and you need to buy a tent at the gas station on the way there and you know that you are going to be too drunk and lazy to raise a tent by the time you find a camping spot, and you don't really intend to sleep that much anyway and you definitely have no intention of packing up your tent and take it back home.
Looks like a tent to keep your stuff in at the beach or for your kids to play in in the garden
❤Stink test experiment: please test...wash your hiking clothes (t-shirts, pants, socks underwear, hats scarfs etc whatever you shall be wearing, including shoes). Once done re soke everything in a large sink, bath etc in warm water which contains a good amount of baking soda for at least 30 min. Rinse. Spin in a washing machine, and leave to dry or use tumble dryer until dry. Before you go hiking put your feet in a small tub of water containing baking powder... And also put some baking powder under your arm pits etc. after some time say 10 min..dry your self etc...the idea is that baking powder is a natural germ killer and deodoriser. If there is no bacteria present on your clothes and self you should not stink.. at least not to quickly.. then go on your hike... Please test for how much longer you stay stink free.. thanks a fan from the tiny island of Malta

I think the labels are soaking water through capillary action since it's not a waterproof rater material. I wouldn't trust this tent for more than one use though
For the past two decades ive been camping with a tarp and sleeping bag. it might be a shitty tent but one does not need exceptional gear. I fish and sleep outside with my tarp and a few sticks and a sleepingbag lmao
Seen hundreds of these at festivals like download and people always leave them behind they're that crap! Perfect for little kids to play in the garden with but that's it really. Plus Peter needs to lighten up a bit! 😂
