The thing that sticks out the most to me about the Firefly family is that they almost always win. Killers like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers are dangerous but there's usually a character or two who manages to get the upper hand over them and live to tell the tale. Not the Firefly family, if you encounter them there's basically a 100% chance you're fucked.

Otis in House of a Thousand Corpses is a VASTLY different character from who he is in Devils Rejects, even his appearance, like what happened to him being albino? the scene where he walks into the dining room with the jarred fetus always creeped me out easily the creepiest part of the movie, he looked absolutely friggin nuts way scarier than his Devils Rejects counterpart

House of 1000 Corpses really does succeed in one major way: recreating the feel of a theme park or carnival haunt, especially in a rural area. There isn't much cohesion, there's the barest semblance of plot, but damn it, we got ourselves a cyborg doctor, and we're gonna use him, even if the other ten meters were all hillbillies. I've often seen it as "TCM 1974, shot in the style of TCM 2."

When it comes to 3 From Hell. I remember questioning how they were going to do this film. Not based on the ending of Devil’s Rejects, but because I saw Sid Haig months before with a medical band on his wrist and he seemed pretty sickly and skinny. It was clear that he didn’t have much time and the image still sticks in my mind. As he is the most recognizable clown in horror right after pennywise. News of 3 From Hell went from the original 3 coming back, to then filming problems with Sid Haig, then to stating that he would only show in the beginning of the film due to his illness. I saw Sid at a horror convention, but he also lived on the outskirts of my city. So I would hear stories from others about people who have spotted him. If I remember, one of the stories was about him being spotted in a nearby hospital. It wasn’t long after, that he passed away. RIP to the Captain Spaulding.
In the end, I found Richard Brake to be a decent exchange. He still gives a good performance and captures some of that crazy energy that Captain Spaulding would have injected into the film.

I can't say I was ever a fan of Rob Zombie's films. They always to me felt like they combined the weaker aspects of the two extremes of horror. Like more realistic, 'grounded' horror, the tone is unrelentingly grim and oppressive to an extreme degree, offering very little relief of tension. Yet, they're also very similar to cheesy B-movie 'schlock' in the way that the world is simultaneously exceedingly cartoonish and exaggerated with paper-thin, unlikable characters that we can't become emotionally invested in because they don't really feel like real people.
Still, even if I don't like his films, I will say that he does have one of the most unique voices and styles in horror.

I disagree on your final point. He along with Tarantino and others take the best and worst aspects of exploitation without stopping to think that maybe the grosser aspects of exploitation are better left discarded. Extreme nihilism and cool for cool's sake doesn't move me one bit. It's strikes me as very juvenile. That's not to say I do not enjoy many of Tarantino's movies, like Once Upon a Time In Hollywood or Jackie Brown, which have great moments of humor and characterization. Rob Zombie just doesn't have the chops to make something that's beyond an aesthetic. He may have some neat visuals or a moment or two of black humor, but that's about it. Rob Zombie's movies leave me feeling cold.

I’m of the opinion that House of 1000 Corpses is the best of the Firefly Trilogy and probably Rob Zombie films in general. It’s so unique to Zombie and his style, sometimes shot like a really experimental music video and other times shot like a genuine 70’s grind house film (the shot that zooms in on the dead cheerleader in the bed always sticks out to me due to the grainy quality, I looks right out of the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre film imo). The cast of villains especially are my favorites, they’re so cartoonishly evil and brutal. It really helps steer away from feeling mean spirited and gross like the sequels end up feeling like. I don’t know, I wish the Fireflies stayed as silly and zany as they are in House, I really don’t enjoy seeing them force a woman to strip at gun point and assaulting her further just for shits and gigs. 3 From Hell is forgettable in comparison but I do love the addition of Richard Brake, he’s my favorite part of 31 after all.
I know I’m in the minority here but sometimes the later films just feel a little too real at times…

    • @theg415

I think what works is that they are more goofy and comic-booky? They're terrifying but a lot also goes into gimmicks and implication.
It's why I like TCM 4 so much, it's gimmick-y but it also potarys terror well by going more over the top and implying stuff.
With the sequels, it's really just watching shitty people do shitty stuff and never really highlights how mornic they are.
Like, compare how One Upon a Time does Mansons vs this where it shows how 'realistic killers' would be utter goofs.

The first two films are incredible together, and should really be taken as the only films with these characters.
The first movie lines up classically with those brilliantly cheap horror movies. You get what you pay for as the family really is a theme park.
The second is a perfect sequel, one that you could also watch on its own. The entire film IS different-the characters, the look. It takes out all the horror aspects that you would have expected and gives you a character driven road trip that fills out the world.
The first is all about what you hear in stories and myth, what causes the cops to come and try to kill them.
And the second is the fallout of all their actions in the real world.

The Devil's Rejects was the film that really hammered home to me growing up that loving horror, seeing art in the gruesome, and being fascinated with this truly unique medium of the human experience was ultimately isolating and lonely. Before its release in 2005 (I'd be about 12), my dad or my friends would always watch horror movies with me and we could talk about it after. I remember clearly though, that this was the first film where my dad got up, turned it off and we never watched horror together again. To this day, I don't share my 'real' love of horror with anyone. I'll go see 'Get out' or something with a friend and have fun, but no one knows how much more it means to me, and no one, ever, is going to watch Skinimarink or Halloween with me and see it the way I do. That's why I love this channel so much, I get that para-social connection with InpraiseofShadows and this community. I can imagine myself watching something like this or reading a horror book with a group of people who 'get it' and it's such a great feeling to think I could be part of that and maybe help others feel safe to be themselves around others like them.

Hey there. Just wanted to say that's not even my kind of movie, but I can't help but watch the whole thing anyway because the way you present it. Been loving your channel since I found it and been watching and rewatching your stuff. I'm even starting to warm up to horror for real now, I just don't enjoy these gory ones much - yet? I'm definitively checking these out, since you praised then so highly. Anyways, thanks and keep it up, your videos are fantastic.

Hell yeah dude; I’m fascinated by these movies. They’re kind of nostalgic for me and I appreciate their auteurish elements, even though they’re not traditionally ‘great’ movies
    And the grindhouse intro? Perfection.

this was a really great essay, made me think differently about films i'd watched so many times i thought i'd wrung everything out i could. the way you talk about the perspective of the films being the killers rather than the victims and how that's a challenge to the viewer makes me really want to hear you talk about michael haneke's work. i feel his work is a challenge to viewers in a different way. i have complex feelings about his challenge, i don't think i even entirely agree with his perspective but i appreciate it nonetheless.

So glad to see you are back with a new production. Been watching most of your videos and we must be spiritual related somehow. Great movies to focus on. Agree that Devils Rejects is the best of them, thus I have not seen the final one that came out last. I re-watched both the first two not that many weeks ago. Funny coincidence. All the best...

Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes I found very good. He went back to how Michael became the boogeyman. That was something John Carpenter's Halloween movies never did. I love the old ones and the new ones. Halloween has such a simple idea that scared me as a kid because I lived in the suburbs and you never knew who or what was hiding behind the bushes.

House of 1000 Corpses came out when I was around 11 or 12, and I remember getting my sister to rent it from the video store in town and just being so disturbed but also just mesmerized by all of the crazy scenes and the way they were shot and I’ve watched and bought ever Rob Zombie movie since then. Even the ones I’m not a huge fan of. I went to school and was telling people about it and inviting them over to watch it lol.

Had to stop the video and rewatch all 3 movies as it had been a while. I was lucky to meet Sig Haig in the mid 2010's. Hilarious dude, still have my signed copy of House of 1000 Corpses. Always wished there was an interm movie between 1 and 2 to dive more into the family and the whole Dr. Satan thing. Rejects was great but there was SO much left to explore with the family.

I love Rob Zombie. He is one of my people. The kinds of people we all hang with in Sturgis. Good people. True blue red blooded American. Rolling for Veterans rights, against homeless children and against domestic violence. Christmas for all poor people. Toy runs. Cancer runs. Fundraising. Pokerrides. We love our people.

I've always adored House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. I honestly didn't realize 3 From Hell even existed. I don't think I want to sully my experience from the first two movies, which are pretty disconnected from each other already in style and flow. To mimic both in a third part seems unnecessary. But I'm sure I'll end up watching it eventually. Great video; I just discovered your channel. Can't wait to watch more.
