    Hi! As several people have pointed out (thank you!), there is a difference between real colloidal oats and ground oatmeal (see some of the comments below that cover it really well and why you might prefer one over the other). I should have stated clearly that by grinding and sifting the rolled oats, I was actually making a substitute for fine colloidal oatmeal to use in the soap. I've used them both in soap, but you may prefer to stick with real colloidal oatmeal instead of oat powder like I used. Sorry for the confusion! 😊

    @nowexit Před 2 lety +42

    Love oatmeal soap, I use it all year round and I can never keep it in stock for the shop. On a side note there is a difference between ground oatmeal and colloidal oatmeal. Oats powdered in a coffee mill at home is oat flour where as colloidal oatmeal can not be made at home it is a specialised product requiring specialised equipment in a manufacturing lab setting. Oat flour can not be dissolved in water (even if it looks like it may have) and therefore not as affective while colloidal oats can be dissolved completely and permanently giving it a much more potent effect on the dermis surface (as seen by the difference in price) I only mention it because there seems to be confusion on YT between the two products. 👍🍂🍂🍂

      Thanks for pointing this out! I added a pinned comment to help clear up any confusion and should have been more clear in my video I was creating a substitute with what I had on hand but not actually making colloidal oats. 😊

    Hi Holly, beautiful video and music.
    Just to mention colloidal oats and simply ground oats are two very different things. Colloidal oats are produced in a lab by processing oats in a manufacturing setting by boiling the oats and water soluble active compounds are turned into powder. It cannot be replicated at home by simply grounding oats. Colloidal means it never settles at the bottom and forever dispersed in a medium and cannot be separated/filtered out. So if you take USP grade colloidal oats, it would dissolve in water and never settles at the bottom, nor can be caught with sieve or filter of any sort, whereas if you take simply ground oats like you just did in the video, they would settle at the bottom. It also has certain efficacy guarantee that they measure in the lab for anti-inflammatory effects on skin for it to be called colloidal oats. That’s why it’s USP grade colloidal oats and not simply ground oats.

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  Před 2 lety +1

      I definitely should have mentioned that you can grind oats as a substitute for true colloidal oats in soap, but that there is definitely a difference. In my experience, they have both worked well for me in soap. Thanks for mentioning this! I added a pinned comment to hopefully help clear up any confusion! 😊

      @@hollysoapmaking I suspect this is a difference without much distinction. I have never bothered to purchase colloidal oats and have had fantastic results from finely ground oatmeal made in my BlendTec. I didn't bother to sift it. It makes luscious, creamy lather in my experience.

      Definitely not a dumb question! I did lift the lid and look at the top of the soap. It had a gelled look to it that was much different that how it looked initially. I should have taken a video of it, actually, but here's a link to an article by Lovin' Soap with photos in case you want to see those. Mine didn't crack or wrinkle up, but it was completely dark all the way across. I'm not sure if it would have overheated or anything, but since the gel phase was complete, there was no reason to leave it in the oven any longer, so that's why I removed it at that point. Hope this helps!
