My CHEAP Porsche Boxster Gets A CHEAP New Radio *Apple CarPlay*

- My cheap and and very high mileage 987 Porsche Boxster needs a cheap (but very good) headunit. A $9,000 manual transmission convertible Porsche seems like a car I'd hate, but after driving it I'm completely in love with it. It has plenty of power, the 5 speed transmission is perfect, and somehow everything still works.

I'm definitely on the side of "aftermarket head units suck and never look right", but this looks super clean, functional, and well done
Is there anything JR can't do? He never ceases to amaze me.
And it's the confidence of his abilities- well earned - that he approaches every project with.
@@P.Galore The acorn didn’t fall far from the tree.
he put a head unit in a car it's not exactly rocket surgery
@@Hard_Right I can't do it, so I'm amazed. Doesn't take much to amaze me because I can't really do anything.
Brain surgery maybe? Then again, with good schematics...
Commenter from Europe here - FYI it's really common to find battery positive and ignition positive swapped in the factory wiring here. Some manufacturers (Vauxhall/GM spring to mind) had this setup for decades. It's so common that all ISO harness adapters here have bullet connectors in to easily swap them round without having to repin.
Yellow/red were swapped on the harness for my VDO/Continental as well. Confused the heck out of me at first. I think they're backwards on the Alpine head unit in Josh's 996 as well.
Red and yellow switch around is very common. A lot of aftermarket loom kits have bullet connectors on red and yellow to allow the swap.

It's important to not warn Jr of these things. He needs to have adversity in his life.
I bought this unit after you reviewed on your channel. Works great in my F150 beater truck. Thanks!
Bought all the gear. The ATOTO head unit was $129 for black Friday so just had to do it. I watched several of these install vids, and bought the Spriral Audio harness for the install as I've got the Bose system. Total cost $489 for everything. I'll report back on how this goes.
I'm probably in the small population that doesn't need or want car play. That being said, that looks really nice and matches the interior very well in my opinion. Very nice work!
Waze is invaluable if you are trying to avoid traffic a cops
I thought that until I got a new f150 and it's life changing. Will never own a vehicle without it.
As someone who has never owned an iphone, I guess I'm in that population too.

I enjoy your install videos like this more than almost anything, bc it's best watching you nerd out. You also do a great job sharing tips from your experience doing this, too.
Great installation video, JR! The unit fits well and looks almost as if is OEM. It seems to be a lot of head unit for the money and would be all that most people need. A lot of effort and brain work is needed but the result is worth it.
Your mileage may vary with that head unit. I had one in my Miata for a hot second before. I just got super annoyed with how bad the audio quality is. I replaced it with the joying unit, another Chinese brand, but that one died after 3 weeks and just never turned back on. Now I've got a JVC or pioneer or something that was about twice the price with less features but works a lot better and has better audio quality.
I learned to stay away from the chinese junk. I always ran Pioneer or JVC until this summer for a brief while and bought two chinese head units - and learned to just pay double and get quality. Replacing my chinese units with Pioneer...
True that I just stick with one of the big 4 deck brands.. I built up an SL55 AMG and tried the radio Tavarish installed and recommended and it was a total let down..
@@PatrickWalen I completely agree - been installing big four since 1989 and never had a problem until this spring with the china stuff. I made the mistake of putting my best system in the vehicle I drive the least and store 11 months of the year - going to put that in everything else after the china experience. By the way - the single din seller contacted me on their own saying the deck was garbage and gave me my money back six months later (just last week).
With that price you could just get a spare one and keep it on the shelf.
only reason i stay up this late! thanks for doing what you do!
Thanks for staying up to watch! 💯
This will become one of your most watched videos. Fantastic work and on behalf of many, a massive thank you !
Great tip on using relay versus dedicated switched ignition wire on some models. Good stuff.
I love audio installation videos. I think cars are getting too advanced for me to do it myself anymore, so I can live vicariously through you JR. Nice work. The finished installation looked fantastic. Would love to know how it sounds!
You should do a blooper reel video
Don't know if that would help him or destroy him.
glad you are having fun with the Boxster. It will grow on you more and more.
Nice Atoto unit, nice to see newer companies make good products.
Looks great in there! Nice to see the full process and potential issues anyone could run into.
Great headunit install.
Safe travels in that refreshed Boxster. Looking good ! 👍
Very nice fit for aftermarket. That trim kit really brings it all together.
Solid content and you are on it. Excellent tip when installing infotainment in cars and trucks. More please!
Nice clean installation! Very functional!
I think this is a great addition to your Porsche
I am just amazed at the evolution of car audio components.
I got the same unit after watching your video, super helpful!
Great informative video, I have followed it and just fitted the Atoto S8 in my 987 Boxster. I bought the canbus patch lead to iso connectors, so it was plug & play out of the box. Just had to add a pin for ASK amp turn on. Got the reverse camera to fit & going to look for the illumination wire. The black locking tabs you cut off, I discovered all four foul the small screws that fasten the metal side plates on. I simply fettled them with my Dremel, which now allows them to push in easily. A brilliant video, many thanks 👍👍
Had no clue this was available, just ordered the whole kit for my Jeep Wrangler. Thanks.
Very nicely done! That head unit looks perfect!
Love the collabs with 100%Jake.
Nice reveal, I have have an old Kenwood in my 2012 Subaru, gives me ideas about swapping it out. Looking forward to the Arkansas run coming up, and that backup camera.
I've had my atoto f7 for over a year in my 4runner and love it. Great choice for any vehicle!
Thank you for the video I was able to install the same system in my 2008. Love it
Use some duct seal to fill the gap where the exterior wires go through the grommet.
That head unit looks fantastic, doesn't even look odd like most aftermarket HU installs.
JR, Harman Becker Automotive Systems (also just known as Becker) is part of Harmon International's automotive division (which also includes Bang & Olufson Automotive); Harmon International also owns AKG, dbx, Harmon Kardon, Infinity, JBL, and Mark Levinson, among others, and Samsung's owned them since 2017.
Ahhh, I hadn't seen it branded like that before, makes sense! 🍻
They do own everything... BSS, Crown, Soundcraft. HiQ Net the world.
Nice clean install and the colored trim looks factory. I love these kits when designed well. I wouldn’t own a car now without apple car play. Drive safe and enjoy your trip!
Totally agree with the choice of head unit. Great install!
I have heard several good things about that headunit. Good install. 👍 Matt
Thanks JR! I just used your discount code on this for my 2008 Saturn Sky.
Unit looks sweet.
Clean install.
Clean install!
Perfect for the vehicle.
I'm committed to the cause here. Never thought that "I wonder what JR is up to tonight " would become a common thread 🤔 Great content lately!
Great Upgrade!!!
Great install and 👍
unit
That actually looks good
Just the mention of the band Cartel at the end of the video… I haven’t heard that name in a long time. Thanks for making me wanna go listen to them again!
Great info and looks super! I recently installed stereo and after much research, the consensus was needing to run 12V wire from the fuse box. No mention of Red-Green as accessory. I will be trying this on weekend. 😎🏎️
another great video from JR. thanks
Nice radio.the date on it is my birthday. Love your videos keep up the good.
Looks cool that head unit
The harness in my 987 cayman was miss pinned as well. It was one of my favorite cars I had owned, super easy to work on when necessary. Only ever had one head scratching issue.
Hopefully you didn't have to install a backup camera 😬
@@WatchJRGo I did actually, and I did it pretty much the way you did, except I didn't drill holes. Had to remove the inspection covers and ran it right up under center console. Only weird thing was it didn't like h hot starting after being filled with gas, ended up being a temp sensor that tells the ecu if the car is hot or cold.
Great upgrade JR...looks OEM to me!
Awesome stereo! Looks perfect in the Porsche! I want one now LOL! Thanks! 😊
Very nice install 👍 I’m a fan of the look
Great video. Love the unit. Wish there were one to replace the 16 Audi A3 I just bought.
Awesome unit!
Good choice and so cool.
Impressed by your 12v knowledge. 100% right.
Thanks!
Amazing, well done.
That looks so clean-that is the main thing. It looks like it always belonged there.
I think the Metra manual mentions that in the Boxster, the 12V IGN and BAT are switched
Loved the video, cool install and the dash kit looks amazing!
I love the 2pm upload time! Well, 2pm for me...
Great Video!!! Great Choice!!
Looks great !
You surprised me today when you said you went into the kitchen to clean your sticky part of with dish soap I thought you went to the kitchen to cook a nice healthy meal lol. Thanks for another great video John.
brilliant - thanks
A good head unit w excellent music maps and Bluetooth is a must. Totally agree that you need it and if you want it and like it that’s the right choice.
Looks great!! Now I know where to go for electrical upgrades on my 66 Cuda!
Upgraded my 93 Land Cruiser to modern double din unit with all the bells and whistles in addition to back up camera. Sound is awesome now
Atoto is a great Android stereo. I have one in my F150.
Now the 4th CZcamsr I’ve seen put in an ATOTO. I am now SOLD!
Thanks for this! Just sent all this to my Amazon cart for the Boxster S I’m picking up soon. Gotta have modern amenities. Lol! 🙏
Looks great.
Very nice job on that install. How is the sound quality?
Hope you get a new shop. Love seeing lots of projects
Working on it! 💯
If he gets a new shop he should recreate this garage inside it to maintain the intimate vibe.
HomeKit garage door opener is amazing. I have mine set to automatically open when I get within a 1/4 mile of home so I can just pull in. I was surprised when that started popping up after installing the garage door opener.
Love the Boxter 😊😊😊😊😊😊
LOVE the Porsche!
cool car, love it. What you like is what matters, oem electronics ages as fast as a pc.
Awesome!! i need a head unit with android auto just like this, i will check it out. That backup camera quality is great too
Damm that thing is great....good job
Had that same headunit under a different name. I only paid about 30 or 40 bucks on Amazon and it worked way better than i expected...my only complaint waa sometimes in the winter it acted funky when it was super cold
Mine has the same issue with the cold. It makes zero sense to me. I bought mine after a buddy recommended it, but his started to overheat when it wasn't even hot outside. Maybe it's because the head unit is over the heater core in his Corolla, but the Sony unit he got to replace the Atoto doesn't have that issue. The Sony XAV-150 is like $150 more but it's so much better, I tried his and now I can't stand how laggy the Atoto is.
Love my atoto s8
That’s a nice head unit
Bought this based off Jake's reviews, looking forward to installing it in the 2000 Silverado 4.8 I just picked up.
I see your keeping this car for awhile
Good feedback on clipping the lower tabs on the faceplate kit. The HU I got blocks the lower tabs only from being pushed in, and if I didn't cut them, this thing would NEVER come out.
Great video
I like it, thanks.
My last couple of stereos I have done through crutchfield and for an extra $25, they pre-wire the harness. Totally worth the time savings especially on my last one that needed a module to integrate into can bus and steering wheel controls.
Great tip to share.
Never knew they did this-I have always done my own harness.. but them doing it for me is always nice 😂
I love Crutchfield. They sold me my surround sound system for my TV. The tech was excellent and helped me avoid spending too much money.
Having wired the harness myself, I would generally agree with you. However for this vehicle, if it has Bose, you might as well wire it yourself if you're buying the fiber optic adapter separately because the harness adapter is only going to be 3 pins. Buying the parts separately vs. the bundle through Crutchfield would save you a couple hundred dollars on the fiber optic adapter alone.
Top job!! Let’s face it - Porsche makes the best cars but sux in the radio department !!
Love your chanel bro !!!
Av had it a few times having to swap the red and yellow about. Just depends on car. I think the worst one I had to do was a Vauxhall lol. Great video and keep it up 👍
I've always loved white Porsches.
That's funny i worked at harman becker years ago and ran a smt line.
Gabe good job
Looks awesome
I'm enjoying the content, and whoever gets this 987 next is getting a very nice car.
I’m trying!
