Chris - is it normal/possible to check how the clutch and flywheel are as part of this inspection when underneath or is it only possible when driving and checking for any sticking vibrating issues etc? Such a helpful video for my 986. Amazing work chaps 👏

@@TheChrisParkhouse Hi Chris, unfortunately the only way to check the clutch and flywheel is a test drive on a service. The only way to check these items properly is to remove the gearbox. Hope this helps 👍🏼

I'm very surprised at how mint the car actually turned out. Like even the water drains were pretty clean, new brakes and radiator, very nice/clean interior, pretty okey exterior. Very lucky purchase. In any other car I wouldn't think about the suspension work the car needs, but this one might be worth it. The exhaust could indeed use some improvement, especially with those high revs. It's interesting to see that such a childhood dream car is pretty reasonble/cheap to maintain (if the car wasn't abused). I'm enjoying the content as if I bought it, so keep it up! 😄😄😄 Also funny to hear gf took the Porsche 😂 She knows her stuff!

Did a full suspension/chassis refresh on the driveway on my old 2002 986 at about 120k miles. All the arms, top mounts, dampers, springs, gearbox and engine mounts, inner and outer track rods etc... Its nothing like as expensive as some claim so long as you shop around for parts (Meyle, TRW etc). You wont beleive how much better it is once done, even though the car feels 'fine' before hand. Very nice to work on as allthe fasteners etc are good quality. Just watch the ARB droplink upper bolts through the hubs holding the struts on, often stuck. Highly reccomend Koni FSD shocks too!

Great and simple point re drain points and holes. so many cars have various front and rear drains which if blocked will cause internal overspill and damp smells or puddles and other more serious issues such as electrics. Worth checking on any car twice a year and especially if you park under trees and in the autumn. Plus nice pace of video and explanation, sounds a genuine place and who only fix or replace what needs to be done.

Modifying the exhaust will effect fuel consumption. Any future alterations that are non-standard must be declared to your insurance company. All round, a great purchase. Years ago, my neighbour took his Boxter abroad. The drain holes got blocked with sand from joyriding on the beach with the roof down! When the Winter came, the rain quickly filled the car up with water, and the alarm couldn't be silenced (throughout the night!) Expensive repair!

My IMS failed three years ago on my early 2005 Boxster (I purchased the car new), and the car had just over 21,000 miles...250 miles after my last oil change. I always changed my oil myself every year, had a spin on oil filter and a magnetic drain plug. No metal ever showed up, and I always cut my oil filter open to look inside. Sent the car to LN Engineering after the failure...one of the best experiences I have had with a business. They rebuilt the motor (not too much was wrong...just metal that needed to be cleaned) and had them install the "IMS Solution". The car runs better than it ever has. By the way... Porsche told me to kiss-off. I've owned at least one Porsche since 1975, so I'm a Porsche guy. Still love the car, just not the company.
The last tips on keeping those drains clear was excellent. Thanks.

Not sure if you've made the upgrade or even if you still have the car but I added an aftermarket exhaust muffler to 986 which made a huge difference - perhaps too huge which is why I changed over to a Porsche PSE exhaust system, a more expensive option but one that yielded a subtle improvement to the original back box and was less showey than the aftermarket version. If you are looking for that perfect sound then one thing I would upgrade are the headers becasue they not only imporve the sound but also the overall perfomance and efficience of the car.

Notwithstanding the click-baity title, another great one Joel. You did a smash-and-grab on this car IMHO. Obviously a well cared for Boxster, new brakes, etc. that is a major bargain. It looks post inspection like you nailed it on the head...sometimes you do business with people where, at a certain level, like 3K, their time is worth more than money and it's worth it to price very aggressively and shift it fast. That's ALWAYS a great situation to find yourself in! And now you've got a great shop for it too. I'd say a good day at the office lol. As a '03 Z4 3.0 six speed owner myself, I absolutely love the car to bits. Just a run to the grocery, hearing that straight-piped M54 burble and flinging it around a couple corners puts a smile on my face every time. But I'm very ADD with my cars, and obsessions creep into me that I inevitably act one (and yes, it's cost me a lot of $ and headaches over the years, worth every one of 'em!) And I've always loved Boxster S's and the bug is creeping into me. How would you honestly compare the driving experience, the vibe, etc. of each? I know it's early days for you with the Porsche so might be hard to say but definitely curious. And apologies if you've covered all this but did you sell the Z to buy the Boxster, or did you want rid of it for other reasons? Thanks much and cheers! Keep up the amazing work.

Glad the mechanic was accurate on the IMS issue, really it’s a change when you change the clutch job because 90% of the labour is identical until you get to the other 10% removing the IMS bearing. That weeping is the RMS, it happens basically the seal perishes slightly and it weeps, you get drops of oil on the drive and can get a slight smell of burning oil plus your oil consumption increases slightly but give it a blast with the jet washer and your good.
You drain plugs can be sorted with a trombone cleaner, literally a long metal springy flexible length with brushes on either end used for cleaning the inside of a trombone. It costs about £5 just push it in the top and look for it out of the bottom. Pull it all the way through and the drain is clean.

IMS is a rare thing - bore liner failure is a more common in the water cooled cars (still rare - but does happen more). I believe it affected the 996/997 (especially the S/4S 3.8 997) more than the boxsters, but i wasn't unheard of on the 2.5/2.7/3.2s.
For the price you paid - i'd say you got winner. Also subscribed, look forward to seeing your channel grow Joel.

Great video. Do the suspension first, you'll get more out of the car. The aftermarket suspensions are great and come in at about the same price as factory with much better gains. If your going to do the exhaust then do the race spec headers and everything with it. Better sound and a big gain in horsepower.

You've done well, car looks great and many wouldn't believe that purchase price.
My only complaint about eporsch is the use of the impact wrench on the locking wheel nut. It wasn't hammered on but they aren't as durable as the standard bolts.

Excellent video with good content and advice, my Boxster S 2001 on 93k and I am always concerned about the IMS bearing and RMS seal, this video tells me it is very rare. Thank you

It is pretty rare yes, and the higher the mileage the better really because after around 100k if it hasn’t given way it probably won’t

As a fellow 2003 Boxster S owner I can tell you you have an amazing bargain there. I paid much more for mine so for its age, condition & spec that is one incredible bargain. Well done!! Ive had a gundo hack done to my exhaust which gives it an improved growl without drone. So might be worth you exploring that option with your exhaust.

  • @theworldsyourlobster1583

Another great video Joel really enjoyed that , that’s a nice 986 S at that price and a lovely colour and spec , it’s had some money spent on it ,

Personally I would forget about a louder exhaust and refresh the suspension ... plus any detailing the car needs. Cant beat going to a specialist on a marque, good viewing
