Coati Mundi aka Andy Hernandez formerly of Kid Creole and The Coconuts and also Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band risks his life on an improvised comic romp through Washington Square Park. Unsuspecting parkgoers are pounced upon and forced to become unpaid extras.
This no-fear freestyle fun fest frolic flip flop forage was fortunately inspired by a lack of informal education and an obsessive need for misplaced alienation.
Guerrilla-style music video directed by
Ed Steinberg of ROCKAMERICA.
Filmed on a lovely NYC Sunday afternoon in 1981.

AMAZING TRIVIA SIDEBAR:
- There were 7 to 9 complete performances done that day. There were very few edits made. You forensics freaks however will be able to figure out where the cuts were manifested by the size, dimension, and kinetic angle of the various shadows cast by the people, poles, and the surrounding foliage.
- This video was previously posted as two clips. Even though it meant a drop in quality we however combined both clips and re-posted it as a single clip at the behest of celebrated Film Director & Mundi fan Olivier Stone. When Coati auditioned for a film role that eventually went to Tom Cruise he paraphrased the lyrics singing: "ME NO POPEYE - YOU NO OLIVE STONE".
- One of the kids playing in the children's playground section turned out to be Leonardo DiCaprio. Could you tell which one it is?
- We had a 20-year anniversary of the filming event. It turns out unfortunately that 85% of the people under 21 years old that day are presently incarcerated in a maximum secured facility. Please pray for them.

Saw Downtown 81 last Fall when it was briefly in theaters again and this song has basically been stuck in my head non-stop since then. Love that there's a full video!

I was in Paris in 1983 and invited to a concert at the Palace. I went. It was coati mundi. BEST SHOW EVER. I went back the next night for his second performance. Luckily I bought his album as it was tough to find here. Sey Hey is the jimmy jam! Come out and perform again man! The world needs your music!!!

Awesome to see Washington Square in 1981. I was there a few weeks ago, August 2010 but in 81 when it was an entirely different place to what it became in 1985 onwards, when a crack problem and political pressures from nearby residents led to a huge police presence and a stop to amplified music of all types that was part of the fabric of the place. No more of the party scene now that's just hinted at here with the roller skaters and boom boxes briefly shown.
Just say NO kids......No seriously -great video shot around Washington Square NYC-was there while working in the 80s.Love his energy ( & with Kid Creole) and the fact that it's just the tourists wondering wtf -locals just goin about there business....
