I’ll be honest, I expected Fred to start dressing up as a ghoul and haunting people to go full circle.
Turns out the ghost was really the Young Man Jones, who used a disguise to steal people's kidneys.
100% would've loved for Fred to start spitballing ideas of how to make money and ends up just dressing up and haunting places.

I think Fred's family lost their Scooby Snack empire money when people's pets started dying of liver disease from substandard manufacturing in their Chinese pet food factories.

As for Daphne, well...she's just a greedy bitch.
His parents in Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. (my favourite animated Scooby Doo thing) literally got plastic surgery to look like their son and an older Daphne just to find where Fred had hidden the Planispheric Disc.

I’m pretty sure Shaggy and Daphne just footed the bill for everything, with Velma handling the accounting. Fred may or may not have known what money even is. When have we ever canonically seen him pay for anything at all?

I love the fact that in the original series, they never outright said how the gang made money. Specifically, that they were subsidized by Shaggy and Daphne's wealthy families, who could afford to let their college age kids bum their way all over the country doing God knows what. To their credit, they did live relatively simply (Scooby and Shaggy's outsized appetites aside) and were civically minded enough that they would help others in need, but much of it came down to the fact that half the team didn't really want for money.
Also, credit to the late 90s Cartoon Network movies for actually having them finally build a business model around their passion. A TV show centered on paranormal investigation and debunking hoaxes was the logical outgrowth of their strange hobby, though in retrospect probably would not have caught on before the 90s, when shows like that started to become popular.
They're actually high school aged kids most of the time with Shaggy usually being the oldest at 17 while Velma is the youngest at like 15 or 16 while Fred and Daphne are both 16 while Scooby is 7 (which is like 49 for dogs so he's practically middle aged lol). Their ages were never really set in stone but for the most part, they're teenagers hence the iconic "meddling kids" quote. I think they were adults in the 18-21 age range in the "What's New, Scooby-Doo?" show while the movies made during the 2000s had them in their mid 20s (which would explain why some of those movies featured scenes with Daphne and Velma in bikinis because they were legal then lmao).
I like the theory that in the original show Fred and Shaggy were draft dodgers.

There was a Johnny Bravo/Scooby crossover once. I remember Fred telling who should work together, and he didn't say Daphne should be with him. She IMMEDIATELY rolled her eyes and said 'Frehed' in a "oh silly you" voice. Fred immediatley changed the search party so he and Daphne would be together 😂
I’m so glad somebody remembered that Shaggy is an athlete. Now they stereotype him as a slacker, or do the stereotypical weed joke. Shag was A high school track star, and that’s the reason he was so skinny and hungry all the time, that’s also why he was used as bait so often, because the gang believed him to be the fastest and that there was no way any ghost, ghoul, or specter would catch him.

Shaggy's return to Athletics is the deepest reference to the very first episode of "Scooby-Doo, where are you!", "What a Night for a Knight", where Daphne mentions that Shaggy is the best gymnast in school.
And then in Ghoul School (1988) he becomes a gym teacher!

Fun fact in the very first movie Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island it actually shows how their lives would be when they stop hunting ghosts Daphne as she's rich it's pretty much the one who's the most set she gets her own talk show and has Fred as her personal agent Velma works as a librarian and Scooby and Shaggy jump from job to job because they can't really keep one for various reasons and they all pretty much think it's boring

I love that Shaggy is such a good person. Instead of going home to rest, he prefers to help Fred in his situation, and when he knows that Fred tricked him into taking his kidney, he simply accepts it. Truly a Chad.
Shaggy will just regenerate new kidneys with superpowers, so it not cos anything to help old friend.
With the athletic skills Shaggy got, he outran Fred and dialed the police. Fred hijacked 3 cars after the Mystery Machine ran out of gas before the police tased his ass and charged him with operations of organ selling. Fred received 6 years and dropped the soap in prison.
The ending is fitting - Fred doing what he does best: laying traps.

Shaggy actually has been a high school gym coach (well boarding school gym coach) and I think one of the movies had Velma working in a forensics lab so those are pretty much canon jobs for them.
fun fact, Shaggy and Scooby hold several olympic world records in at least one of their timelines. If I remember right, there's even a scene somewhere where a coach thought of hiring them to be fitness instructors... until he saw their diets.

It’s kinda funny because it’s theorized that in the Scooby Doo universe, the economy is going through a huge recession, thus budget cuts in government sectors and economic hardship has caused people to do some kinda whacky stuff. I mean especially when you consider some of the tech some of these guys had at their disposal that could net them way more potential profit than their original goals.
Even scooby snacks cant save the gang from the horrors of inflation.
Might even cause a certain type of inflation, if you get what I mean…
And somehow this is still more respectful to Fred's character than the Velma show did him.
pretty much ANYTHING is more respectful than it. There are a bunch of changes that would have fixed it too, but someone wanted their self-insert. an Idea I came up with is that Velma should have been a relative of the original gang but her jealous of Velma's success gradually drives her mad until she becomes an actual villain, wanting to prove that there was a mystery that the gang couldn't solve and her "gang" would be sort of the opposite stereotypes of the originals but her behavior starts leading to her downfall as the gang leaves her one after the other. I thought it would be a beautiful tragedy where a moderately successful character gave up everything to pursue jealous and revenge. Meanwhile... Velma exists and if I remember right, wasnt Scooby a human turned into a dog or something?

Fred stated he had lost enough blood from the gang bangers to black out. Since he's broke we can easily assume he hasn't been eating well(or maybe at all) so he's most likely still weak. Shaggy has a job and therefore has definitely been eating his fair share. He'll be fine.

Seems that when they mention things, it's one of the gang's parents that funds everything, and this is all a hobby depending on the continuity. The only time in the franchise where they specifically have Fred charge for their services is A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. And even then it's like the kind of money a kid from the 50's would charge.
Books and promotional materials from the very start, 1969, refer to "Mystery Incorporated," without explaining whether this is an actual company or just something they roleplay. The name was never spoken on screen until Zombie Island (1998), I believe.

Honestly, i would totally think that Fred would actually make a great military contractor for fortifications or something. I mean dude can put together a functional trap out of anything. imagine what he could do with a military budget. dude could probably create a fortress so impenetrable anyone that goes in couldn't even come out. Or everyone would get locked out it is that good. Or he could teach like urban combat classes or something. teaching people to improvise think outside the box etc.

My favorite canon explanation for this is that Scooby-Doo, Where Are You and What's New, Scooby-Doo are both continuations of Mystery Incorporated. Seriously great series, might be my favorite Scooby-Doo series.
