Engaging from start to finish
I attended GIT from M1979-M1980....hearing HR's voice again was SUCH a blessing, I actually had tears in my eyes as I was instantly transported back to my time there. The best treat I ever gave myself was going to GIT.....much love to his Son's who put this together. (I watched the first 5 episodes so far)
Howard Roberts is the ultimate musician's musician ---- the kind everybody looks up to because he set such a high standard of excellence in everything he did. There are very few guitarists who get to the higher plane of virtuosity that Howard was on. When guys like George Benson say "Howard was my idol" that kind of sums it up.
"Play it so slow you can't possibly make a mistake" is an approach I've heard attributed to HR; he may have said that at a seminar in Minneapoiis decades ago, long since archived, but a technique I recommend to all my students. HR forever!
As I've listened to all of Lee Ritenour's work, from 1975 to present, you can definitely hear Howard's influence on Lee.

I attended his 3 day seminar at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in the late’70s; his lesson on tonal center freed up my playing

Thank you Jay for this wonderful expose on your dad, Howard Roberts. He was not at MI much when I arrived in 89' for a one year course. Through this Documentary I understand in detail what I gained by attending. His dedication to learning and teaching informs me everyday.
Great series, interesting and fascinating to see his journey and encounters. His sage advice about learning resonates with me as a former boxing coach preached “Slow work is good work,” and it has proven effective.

Used to devour his monthly guitar player magazine columns which also had Lenny Breau, Sharon Isbin, Tommy Tedesco!!!!!blew your mind children…that was before the internet had it all ready for you to consume….

Very interesting. In the late 70s he was at Port Townsend for a several day ‘clinic’ with many musicians. He was assigned to work with out group- I thought it pretty cool get really got excited about what we were doing and just had to sit in and give a few ideas. All very humbly, and excellent information.
I used to play some gigs and sessions with Jill here in Port Angeles years ago alo.
Watched all 5 parts and enjoyed the whole thing. Well done !
Great footage of HR playing. He had a very unique picking technique - the way he moved the pick with his thumb and forefinger. I've never seen anybody else with that approach. It sure worked for him. Many thanks for the credit for Archival Research! Best Mike

He said in an article in his Guitar Player magazine column that he rotated his wrist and he described it as a variable-speed process like a machine. So I imagine him getting faster, crisper dynamics the nearer to the center of that rotation. He was saying it was his way of achieving almost unlimited speed.
In the seminar I attended he called it circular picking.

uno; i got all the Wes Montg, GBenson, PatMartino .. maaaan, Martino! GGreen albums .. how is it i don't have Howard Roberts albums. I've known of him from the 70s .. those GP mags i've LONG since mislaid. He's like BKessel on acid! Those Pracis books were incomprehensible 2 me. I know he was one of the Wrecking Crew. He was the only one who could walk outa Phil Spector session. Gotta get his albums! A unique intellect

Great to hear about Howard- I'm a major fan. Around "74, I went to a Howard Roberts seminar- the guys I was playing with were backing up Howard, despite the fact that he was light years ahead of them, and me- I got to join in at the end, and got to play with him. A great experience- great personality as well. Thanks for posting this- can't get enough of this stuff-

Thanks, what a great series... I attended one of the early H.R. seminars at the old Knickerbocker Hotel, maybe 1971, 72? What an eyeopener... On the 2nd or 3rd day H.R. had a couple friends come in and play some tunes, who you ask? Herb Ellis and Joe Pass. It was a great seminar and pushed me into playing for a living, I'm 72 now and have loved every minute of my musical life, thank you Howard! You too Jay and Brandon, great work putting this together.

In the San Fernando Valley, and took lessons from Mike Anthony, who is in this series - 1964, Valley Arts. HR was so inspiring- as were many Of the great studio guitarists. Saw most of them play at Donte’s in N Hollywood Guitar Nights. I have HR’s vinyl LP’s well worn. What great music! Thanks again -
