  • Pompey play Oxford United in the 2nd Division. Oxford lead 0-1 with minutes left. Then Biley springs into action. Notice how the atmosphere is generated from the terraces......lovely when you could stand!!!! Notice all the fencing because of the very real hooligan threat in this era...ENJOY

jesus, i remember that game well, although being a o u f c lad in the away end, it was a classic with santa coming on the pitch and holding the game up for 3 mins, with biley scoring the 2 goals in santa's added time to the loudest roar of a winner i've ever heard in 36 years of watching footie!!

Good on you Nicky for your gracious reply. It was a helluva game (but not a good way to lose) - and *still* had time to hit the bar after!! Bloimey, you & us had some battles then (& recently!)

I was there that day with my brother Paul , and so was Father Christmas!! His pitch invasion was amusing but just added to the entertainment. The best last few minutes I can recall in over 50 years of watching Pompey. Nice to see and listen to again, just a shame we had to lose Alan biley afterwards.

My dad took me to this game we stood right up the top of the fratton end, remember when santa ran on to the pitch causing extra minutes for the legendary Alan Biley to score two late goals in the fratton end. The atmosphere was fantastic that night.

Now this is proper football, when someone gets tackled they get back up with no complaints and trys to get the ball back, now if you so much as nudge someone they roll around like theyve been sprayed in the eyes with lemon juice. Wish I could have seen a match like this in person but still its nice to see vids like this to know what proper football was like.

Great bit of editing. Always enjoyed going down Portsmouth for a day out with my club Chelsea (not Chelski). Lot of respect for their fans now and then, despite not makiing us feel that welcome!. Deliberately looked up Alan Biley as he suffered a torrent of let's just say pity from one independant Chelsea fan, who took exception to Alan's haircut, who just so happened to be put on the wing for some inexplicable reason. The poor sod had to suffer 'Biley. Get your hair cut' for 70 minutes. After that the individual saw that the linesman was wearing what we call in London a syrup. Don't know why the man turned up really. As the game was a 0-0 I'm thinking that it was probably the reason I laughed or found it laughable and then laughed.Last mention goes to Mark Hateley. He was a bit useful. Biley was an exciting player and consistently dangerous, but Hateley would take my vote as a starter for the 86 world cup. Destroyed Italian defenders with his class in the air AND on the floor. Overlooked by the papers!!

It is still one of the greatest games I have ever seen at Fratton Park and this is still the best team I have ever seen play for Pompey, even with all the players we have had in the Premier League.
The little boy behind Alan Ball is his son Jimmy.

I was at this game, at the away end. What the highlights miss out is that Santa Claus came onto the pitch in the second half - and it was during the time added on for this that Biley scored the winner.

@pete1201 Season after that. 84/85 we missed out on Goal Difference (I think), the next season - 85/86 by 3 points (to Wimbledon?) - then finally went up (and they changed it to only 2 teams going up as well) in 86/87 - 2nd to Derby IIRC. Yep, Biley went to Brighton for something like £45,000. And Hateley went at the end of this season here to Milan for £915,000.
