- Centre-forward Mark Hateley was the signature signing of Campbell when Pompey returned to Division Two in 1983.
Costing an arbitrated £190,000 from top-flight Coventry, he formed a devastating partnership with Biley.
By the end of the season he had been called up by England and put himself on the world stage with a goal in England’s 2-0 win against Brazil in the Maracanã in May 1984.
AC Milan immediately offered almost £1m for the striker and he moved to Italy, having made 38 league appearances and scored 22 goals, going on to have a hugely successful club and international career. - Sport

Mark and Alan Biley were the best twin strikers seen in my lifetime at Pompey. Alan Player of the season the year before, then paired with Mark, it was made in heaven. This is why I intensely dislike the one up front, boring football touted today.. Thanks for those beautiful memories, guys. True legends, for me.

Derek Johnstone wasn’t bad either tbf.
I remember when he first came to Rangers and spent the first game falling over the ball and kicking it out of the park. By the time he left he was an absolute legend . Moral of the story: first impressions shouldn’t count.

I m a man city supporter and I always felt mark always wore the wrong sky blue shirt
Rangers legend. I’m 40 this year, he was my favourite player as a teenager, even when we had the likes of Gascoigne and Laudrup in the same side. Best header of a ball I’ve ever seen.
Easy to forget Rangers had top players. I remember Hatley used to get nominated for Balon d'or
Very underrated player. England always looked a better side with him in it. Good Nottingham lad too. What a brilliant career he had.
We had a rabbit named after Mark Hateley, such was his popularity at the time in the Portsmouth area.
Loved watching him a true salmon in the air 😂

I still remember a game that he had knie blessure and lead the England team like a maestro. He was a legeng. what happenned him why they speak like he is not there anymore??
