    UNC alum here. Two things to understand why the UNC BOT seems to be suddenly flipping out, one long term, one short term. First, the entire UNC athletic department and donor support hangs off of basketball success. It is only a slight exaggeration to say the only reason the Rams Club (boosters) exist is to secure season tickets in the Dean Dome. That's the long term backgound issue. More immediate, UNC appears to be already losing the NIL battle to deeper pocketed schools. At least that is what die hard hoops fans think when UNC whiffs on all its big man portal targets this cycle while Calipari loads up in Arkansas. In that sense the future is now and BOT members are surely getting an earful from Big Rams about it. When the Bubba-Preyer spat first happened I pointed out that Bubba was simply in denial about how the media rights gap will inevitably morph into a NIL gap and then a competition gap as donors' program support dollars are shifted to NIL collectives. In a matter of weeks Bubba has managed to fall even further behind the curve. I would not be surprised if some trustees ask for his resignation on Thursday to convey the gravity of the times.

      @JeffreyTheTaylor Před 29 dny +5

      Football isn't irrelevant at UNC, that's dook. The Heels will always try to win football games, but the linchpin of the AD is hoops. That's why the BOT is so concerned because if nothing changes in a year or two the SEC and B1G will be buying the best rosters in basketball too, if they haven't already started. UNC as a second-tier hoops program, the donor money stops flowing and wham you are picking and choosing which non-rev sports to cut.

    Bad Karma is finally hitting the ACC which so deserves it. Hate the ACC because they practically kicked USC, a founding member, out in 1971 and when USC tried to get back in in late 70s the ACC said-POUND SAND! Now USC is in a power SEC conference making double what ACC teams make. So leaving the Pac12 er ACC benefitted USC immensely but eventually hurt the ACC. PacACC can't collapse soon enough for me. Even if ACC survives, it will be a lower tier conference.

      The South Carolina rivalry was too intense, and so there were some bad feelings between especially the North Carolina schools and South Carolina (I understand that the Wolfpack fans turned the SCar. basketball bus over on one visit to NC State). But that kind of intensity does create fan interest and good teams - the South Carolina BBall team of 1970 was the team best suited to take out UCLA, but it never got the opportunity due to having to win the ACC tournament to go to the NCAAs.
      But, has the SEC been good for SCar? Has not been a factor in FBall or BBall, and BBall has fallen dramatically from the heady days in the ACC, much like Maryland BBall was a big deal and went head-to-head with Duke and Carolina yearly, and the fans were into it - that intensity thing once again. So big money for the GCocks, but at what cost?

      @tedmaynard7326 I think you are right. The teams hated each other and that really increased the fan interest. I don't really hate any SEC teams.
      USC's greatest MBB coach found it harder to recruit great players after leaving the ACC. The ACC teams were used to seeing a "W" when playing USC. McGuire changed that and actually went undefeated in a regular season in the ACC. Very few ACC teams accomplish that. So when the traditional ACC MBB power teams started losing to USC the ACC wanted to take its ball and go home. Instead of taking pride in what USC was accomplishing in their conference they stuck their thumbs in their mouths. McGuire on a road trip early in his career at USC defeated both Duke and UNC(not the undefeated season)both were ranked in top 10 I think if memory serves me.

    Well, this is interesting stuff. Obviously a lot going on behind the scenes in Chapel Hill. As a UNC alum, I have always felt that we are the heartbeat of the ACC. I've argued that we have no intention of leaving the ACC. But now I think I was wrong. One of the prevailing thoughts that the conference can just redistribute revenue and give more to schools like FSU, Clemson and UNC is a ridiculous thought. It just won't work. Who would you take from? Wake Forest, Boston College, Syracuse? This sort of scheme will do nothing but breed resentment and is a non starter.Here's the bottom line. Each and every year the kids are changing teams like they change shirts. If a player has a good season----say at UNC---then Penn State is calling with a bigger offer. That's how it works. If you can't pay then you can't attract the talent. And you won't be able to compete on the field.
    I think all this realignment stuff will come sooner rather than later. Three new members are coming in July. In your next video I'd love to hear you address why July might be an important date. Good job!

      The uneven revenue sharing would be a killer. What I see in the future is the SEC and Big10 consolidating to about 24 teams each. At that point they will realize that the real way to maximize revenue for the big schools is to weed out the ones that they have that don't bring in revenue. Vandy, Northwestern and others will be on the chopping block to be replace by teams that bring in better markets or eliminated just to let the pie be split to a smaller group. I'm a UNC guy as well and I hope to see the ACC implode because of football money. I'm rather see the league dump Clemson and FSU and get more schools in that will fit the conference.

      Money and access to it is the entire problem in the ACC. UNC can’t save the ACC. If FSU/Clemson leave, it’s all over. That will trigger more movement.
      After the B10/SEC/B12 get finished, the ACC can survive but it will be a G5 conference making about the same as the AAC.

    I was listening to "That SEC football podcast" Sankey wants to improve The SEC profile Basketball Profile. " Will add UNC, Clemson , Virginia, and Kansas. That last one shocked me. That will give both conferences 20 Teams. Sounds like the B2G and SEC offices have already worked it out. FSU and Miami will go to the B2G. You guys better get some Long Johns and Vaseline. It gets cold in Ames Iowa in November. You are right though several SEC teams have built new arenas. Hired several head liner coaches.

      You do realize the B10 makes more money! Also, Miami has been playing the games up North against Rutgers, Pitt, Maryland, Temple, Syracuse and BC since the 80's. FSU has been playing Pitt, BC and Syracuse for road games in October and November since 2004! If they are going to play in the NFL, they will have to play in the cold.

    • @billw5823
      @billw5823 Před 29 dny +1

      I don't disagree, although I would say that there are 3 to 5 teams in the SEC and Big 10 who are worst. Eventually the Big10 and SEC are going to start to look at teams like Vandy and Northwestern and say why are they getting an equal share. This is all about money and once a few other conferences blow up and the two that are left, look around, they will cut out the deadwood and bring in teams that are more likely to bring in revenue.
