The take away I got from this song is the woman is telling her story and she's saying the glamorous life isn't glamorous at all. She's lived an empty life despite her exploring. She's telling us that the simple things in life or the simple life is the most fulfilling life. That you don't need to do this or do that to feel fulfilled. This could also mean that staying true to yourself is the best thing you can do and don't need to be envious of what others have.
You nailed it! This is exactly what this song is about. Age and experience is what it takes to really understand what Charlene is singing about. Angela is still young, time will catchup and she will understand. Not bashing Angela at all it just takes time and experience to fully understand the meaning here. Its a sad song but hauntingly beautiful message.
Hi there. I promote Charlene in the UK and Europe and I can tell you that when Charlene actually recorded the take that you heard in that video and on the actual 7 inch single that came out, she was the victim of an abusive relationship. She had black eyes, broken ribs and was bruised all over when it was recorded. Her first husband shot her dogs in front of her... she was broken in every way. Now you listen to this song again and imagine everything I have said, coupled with a real broken heart. Charlene says she didn't sing it from the heart but from the gut. This song is an absolute masterpiece. The song was recorded around 1976 by Motown but it took until 1981 for it to chart when it reached #1 in the UK. Charlene continues to sing and is bringing out some amazing new stuff. Her last two songs have become airplay hits in the UK.
You may not feel as deeply about this song if your young and not experienced much of life yet. As you get older you will understand there are sometimes consequences or regrets of decisions you've made. The song is a much older woman talking to a young woman of her regrets and that running after frivolous things can in the end leave you sad and alone.
This is a good example of the simplicity of music back in the day. Its about being around the world, meeting lots of people, done many things, but not knowing yourself.
This song was written by my late friend, the great lyricist Ron Miller, who also wrote lyrics to "For Once in My Life," "Touch Me In the Morning,' "Yester Me, Yester You, Yesterday," "Can't We Try," and many others. Ron was the fourth person I met when I had two of my songs published by Motown in the early 1980s. He was a brilliant writer and always treated me as a peer, rather than a mentor. I will write about him in my memoirs. I miss his energy, intelligence and friendship, which was unusual in that we didn't hang out together, but it always felt like we were continuing a conversation whenever I would bump into him at a restaurant or music event. Simply put, he was a lyrical genius. This is not one of my favorite of his songs, however, which I told him once.
Hey Larry, I think these lyrics are amazing. When this song came out I loved it and it really got me but didn't really know why at the time. It was at No1 in Australia for many weeks from memory. Then one day after hearing it for the 100th+ time many years later, the penny dropped for me. I believe the song is saying, money, expensive things, luxuries places, being with famous people, etc won't lead to living the perfect fulfilling life (ie paradise) but will instead cause you to eventually become bitter from that lifestyle (the sweet) after running out of places and friendly faces to see. The narrator is begging to tell her "this so called paradise, it's all a Lie" and "Why I'm all alone today" and for her not to go down that same path. So in the end, it's saying, if you've "Never been to me" you will be all alone and bitter at life. The truth is love which only comes from within (ie "been to me"), "..And it's that man you fought with this morning, the same one you are gonna make love to tonight, that's truth that's love". I can understand why you see him as a great lyricist. All the Best!!!!!
I liked this song when I first heard it and now as an adult I love it more. A song about the decisions we women make in our lives and then the regrets we have from some of those decisions. I find this song to be very hauntingly beautiful.
I can understand why you laughed, it's an old song, so it is a product of it's time in the 2020s. This song makes me cry, because I can relate. I've had adventures and travelled to places many people dream of. What I don't have, is a family. It's a pain this song brings out.
It needs reflection, and journal it I love how deep it is. 💜 For me, this is timely advice to other women hence the "Hey lady..." intro 😁 an honest, open letter to us to find the core of us as women, in whatever role we play in life. A beautiful ballad for sure. Thanks for listening to it!!!
This song was used to good effect in a cult classic film called *The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.* It's about a group of Abba-loving, disco performing drag queens travelling across the Australian outback in a colorful bus to do a big show. It's campy fun and features lots of great '70s songs. Highly recommended!
It was a hit in the radio but many people did not understand the message. Several commenters are right that the song is about regret and how the mother and wife thinks the others life is perfect but it is not. It is lonely. Many thought it was cheesy I mean how can jet setting and living that lifestyle make you lonely and regretful yet it mostly will be.
She's saying I've been everywhere and did everything, but I've never lived out the real me that lives inside. Someone once said that *Hell is lying on your death bed and taking that last breath and realizing that you never lived out the life of the person that deep down inside you knew you were.*
Never give up on your dream. In 1977 Charlene released an album on Motown's imprint Prodigal Records that went nowhere as well as the 3 singles that all peaked in the 90's including this song that peaked at 97. The album was re-released that same year with different artwork & new tracks & still nothing. The albums were abundantly found in cut out bins for 99 cents. In 1982 a Florida DJ started playing it & it took off locally. He contacted Motown & Motown President found Charlene (who had retired from music) living in England & working at a candy store. She was again signed by Motown & I've Never Been To Me went on to be an International hit peaking at #3 in the U.S. She also had a regional duet hit with Stevie Wonder called "Use To Be"
Oh, I love this song…the melody and her delivery. She has the quintessential 80’s hairdo! First time I heard this song was on the radio coming back from a catholic school field trip in 8th grade in the 1980’s so it forever reminds me of those great days…even though the content of the song has nothing to do with my love of it!
Simple, she has had adventure, travel,, and many partners but she never had true happiness, a family .A man she can truly love and a child of her own . Regret!! thanks Angela
This is actually a really sad song. I heard this song many times back in the 80’s and now that I am in my 60’s when I hear this song it really is a sad song as it tells the story of a life spent on things that were fun at the time but now she is much older and is lonely as she looks back at how the life she thought was so glamorous and fun was actually a wasted life. So sad because it is so true for so many people.
It goes against the modern feminist thought process. She goes seeking inner power and satisfaction but in the chase she forgets who she is and in later life she realizes that she would have been happier and satisfied if she had stayed home and been a mother and a wife. She realizes that women can do the things men cannot do and that is their true calling. In the song she's warning the younger girl that she's on an errand that will ultimately leave her hollowed out and unhappy and in the end she doesn't have to compete with men but enjoy being a women. In my humble opinion
My weird interpretation, this is a song about regret. The narrator is telling the younger woman in the song about her life and all that she has done and seen. But now that the narrator is older she thinks what the younger woman has is actually more fulfilling than her life. The twist is it starts out as a warning to a younger audience but by the end, is the older character realizing they have wasted their life away on frivolous things. Or maybe not, lol.
It isn't just the end, the wish that someone talked to me lile I wanna talk to you. It's saying, you remind me of me, and im upset I didn't realize what I had/could have had....I did all these things and yet I'm alone...hear the sound of her voice during the spoken portion ...it's that man you fought with this morning, the same man you're going........it hurts her she is aline and doesn't want someone else to do what she did. It's regret and warning, I did it, it is empty, choose better please
I didn’t take it to mean that she had an abortion Just that she never chose to have children It sounds like she had a bunch of casual encounters that seemed fun at the time, but of course it takes a little piece of your soul every time it happens I told an ex-girlfriend of mine that there is always a difference between sex and love She didn’t understand
It was an odd song when it came out and got a lot of air play on the radio, and as older teens we made fun of it. But as I got older it hit a little closer to home.
I love beautiful melodies and this one hits that mark. As for the lyrics...I think it's important to remember the setup that she is talking to a "discontented mother", "unhappy wife", who is "cursing her life". She then of course shares that she lived a live of self-indulgent pleasure seeking, something most of us are tempted to do at sometime, mostly when we are young. And she did it all, jet-setting with royalty, selling her soul and her body to others for what she thought was fun at the time. But when you are relying on others to foot the bill, eventually you aren't young enough anymore, a few sags here and there and the spigot runs dry. You sit empty and wonder what could have been. What could have been real? What could have lasted? What could have been if she wasn't chasing what she thought was fun until she found her real soul.
This song was a guilty pleasure of mine for a long time. Heard it first when I was just 9 or 10 years young. I thought the melody and the singing were só beautiful.
Different ways you can take it. But it's basically she's been there done it, done that, done those things a few times. But she doesn't have love. She just wants a husband and a baby. All that fancy life style with the rich and famous partying on yachts. She just wants a family.

The narrator of the song has traveled all over the world searching for contentment and never found it. The discontented housewife has what she's been looking for. The narrator is warning her not to loose it. The grass is always greener on the other side.
Hi Angela!!Love your reaction when she said she went to a preacher man and they make love in the sun🤣😂...I love you Angela...this girl is so inlove with you.
5:02 yeah you know how you feel... same way I feel. This song plays like a parody on a sketch comedy show. All the more amusing that it ISN'T a parody. :D
I know the song and I always thought it was a little simplistic. She’s saying that a married life with children is better than an exciting one. I guess it all depends on what you’re looking for . Personally, I think one doesn’t have to exclude the other.
I loved this song when it was a hit in the early 80s. Very unusual considering I was starting high school and not in the target demographic. My peers were listening to AC/DC and Ozzy and I liked Charlene and other soft artists.
first of all you are great and ture! then this song went so very unique because it can change position with different generations ! this is just my opinion!
Life is full of choices, we have to make our mind up so often, if we can know the price that may come with our choices before we make them... we may be able to love our lives, Even if our lives seem a bit lame to outsiders. Find out what brings you joy, makes you happy and go with that. Some "nice" things just have too high a price.
The Story; a young beauty thought being the plaything of famous men was a fun, easy inevitable path to fame money and lifetime happiness. Instead it was a series user men that treated her badly. As her youth and looks faded, the money and treatment got progessively worse. One day she realized she was too old for rich men. Too late she realized she had been chasing a bright shining fantasy. Too late she saw she had no fame, wealth, glamour, family or even self respect.
Think it’s a very sad song. Looking for happiness and never finding it. Funny this song was released in 1977 and barely got in the top 100. Released again in 1982 and went to number three in the US and top in many countries around the world.
I understand why you are so confused. It is so different from the Pop culture of today. It is a woman chasing happiness in all the wrong places and now she's all alone. Sadly, a lot of woman in our generation is living this life. I suggest you get back to this song when you get older.
She lived a superficial glamorous life at the sake of true relationships and sincere connections and now she looks back in regret, and is telling the hapless housewife not to resent her mundane life.
That song is an old memory. I never knew who did it, but do remember hearing it on the radio back then. It definitely sounds like a soundtrack song from the 70s. No idea what from though. Very cheesy. Have a great day!
Excellent song's lovely Angela!!!! I want you to react to Wang Chung song called Dance Hall Day's and react to Skyy- song called Real Love 💕😘💕😘 please react to these as soon as you can beautiful ❤️ lovely Lady!!!!
This song is crazy. I disliked it and frankly laughed at it when it first came out. Maybe it was well meaning but...I mean, yeah. Some of those lyrics just crack me up. I haven't heard it in years and had to see your reaction. You did not disappoint. 🤣 But you tried to be nice as you always do. It's simply a campy, strange song and it's hard to know how to react.
The take away I got from this song is the woman is telling her story and she's saying the glamorous life isn't glamorous at all. She's lived an empty life despite her exploring. Well, she wasted her life trying to fulfill every fantasy and whim, only to wake up alone and empty.
The Temptations did an every more haunting version.

She chose the good life
. Over love. And it didn't bring her happiness.
It wasn’t the good life. It was a pursuit of empty pleasures.

Stupid comment. Women can do anything they want, that´s sexist bullshit.

That's what I'm thinking. Makes me cry, and I'm an old man.
Same here, especially the last chorus. She talked about how she had an abortion and she regrets it for taking the sweet life (her baby).

Great song for a mother to have her adult daughter listen to. Listen again to her voice. It’s nice and mesmerizing.

Great Song ..I also like the way Mary MacGregor ❤
The storyteller rejected real relationships for fantasy of fame and glamor. Too soon old too late wise. So she ended up with nothing, neither family or fame or wealth.
This is hard for youth to understand.
Her life in the song reminds me of The Book of Ecclesiastes. She has the means to fulfill all of her desires, but walked away from each one of them more empty than before.
To me, the message of this song is that there is a price to be paid for every decision that we make
The eagle said it well in the song lion eyes
Every form of refuge has its price
This song should be required listening. It might be uncomfortable to listen to. But its message is needed more now than ever. Especially with the nonstop poison being fed, by the media today, to young people..

Think of it this way
For both men and women who run from relationship to relationship and experience to experience
And at the end, everybody wind up alone
But most people operate from point of view that there is always tomorrow to fix things
To do things better
And she’s telling this person that that’s not always true
Excellent song, ridiculous reaction!!

I wish you'd have chosen Nancy Wilson's (the r&b/jazz singer) version from the 60's

I Dedicate This Reaction Suggestion To The Most Beautiful Person I Have Ever Known,, Malo "Suavecito"...R.I.P. Mom..Love & Miss You🙏❤
A song for all those ladies on fresh and fit lol
This song is an absolute shocker. I'm being kind. YUCK!
I've never seen you speechless like that. LOL
One of the Cheesiest-campy songs EVER made.... OY. Ick!
This version cut off too soon. It's a very pretty song, though.
Suggestion: TomMacDonald "Castles"
Yore expressions were cracking me up!
Think it’s a very sad song. Looking for happiness and never finding it. Funny this song was released in 1977 and barely got in the top 100. Released again in 1982 and went to number three in the US and top in many countries around the world.
Children, and not aborting them for the sweet life. A mother who is bored at home has more then she’s ever attained.

No worries about lol bc the song cracked many ppl up!! Such a timely reaction choice ie Roe v. Wade overturned.
The melody was good but the words do not make much sense
That song is an old memory. I never knew who did it, but do remember hearing it on the radio back then.
It definitely sounds like a soundtrack song from the 70s. No idea what from though.
Very cheesy.
Have a great day!
Same memory…from the 1980’s when I was in middle school!
Hmmm. I have to reserve my comments other than to say always thought this song was schlock. Still do.
Excellent song's lovely Angela!!!! I want you to react to Wang Chung song called Dance Hall Day's and react to Skyy- song called Real Love 💕😘💕😘 please react to these as soon as you can beautiful ❤️ lovely Lady!!!!
A 10 year old would get it gurl. Go back to high school
It is odd.
The real Reason this tune made you wanted to laugh is Because it's Sickenly Lame-O(Just Admit it already)!!!😩😫🤢
Beautiful voice but very cringy!😂
I’ve always hated this song! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I didn't care for this song.
Nice melody but cheesy and the mid song speech she gives is a bit cringeworthy
I couldn't agree with you more.
This song is AWFUL. I thought so as a kid when I first heard it on the radio and it has NOT aged well😩
It was very popular and she does have a beautiful voice
