WOW, this one reached way into the cobweb-filled dusty depths of my hippocampus, haven't heard it since the Carter administration. 😛 This was my first time seeing the video, it reminds me of the backdrop to a Lifetime cable movie. The breadth of music on your channel really adds to the enjoyment factor, I never know what's next each time you're "back with another one" E. 💯

LOLZ Empress, thanks for reacting to my pick...I knew you would get a kick out of this late 70's early 80's cheese-tastic hit! Its def got that 80's TV movie/ Soap Opera vibe & those dramatic lyrics that you can't get enough of.🤣 💜

This song was a hit when I was in 7th grade! I knew she was giving advice, but I didn't grasp the actual depths of the advice. I've always like the song tho. Good delivery and vocals. Powerful life lessons can be taken from this song.

...Oh, Empress, you CRACKED me up on this one! ....IG Models be a HO', too, what-WHAT!?? (5:23) ...HA-HAAAA!! ...As The Empress knows, the tune is about a 'Mistress' (5:07) who lost out on a 'simple' life, by chasing the HIGH life....(cont.)
...The tune, originally released in 1976/1977, which BOMBED....became a 'surprise' hit when a DJ was making fun of it 1982 on the Radio, and it became a surprise Top Ten Pop hit! ...We were inundated with prime time Soap Operas (at the time), which helped the Song become a hit! ...BUT, the more things change, the more they stay the SAME.....

@@EmpressReacts You're welcome. I was listening to your reaction in the car and at first didn't realize you had started singing and not Charlene. You should audition for one of the singing shows. You should find some way to share your gift with others and maybe even make money doing it..
I have a song recommendation. It's called "Color Him Father" by the Winstons. It's very meaningful and sets a good example for men in our messed up society. It's from the 60's. Check it out. Best wishes, Greg

I was a sophomore in high school when Charlene broke out into the music charts with this ballad. I believe it was 1982. I was also in love at the time and so this song is particularly poignant. It was pure joy watching your reaction to the lyrics!

I first heard this in the 90s in the opening scene of "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" with a drag queen lip syncing this in a seedy bar. So camp and there's just something about the melodrama of the lyrics. LOL
Also I recall in one episode of the Brit-com Absolutely Fabulous, Edina laments "oh sweetie, I've been to paradise but I've never ever been to ME"
Empress, try working that line into a conversation and see what your friends say 🤣🤣

An interesting fact about this song is that it was originally recorded in 1977, but didn't become a big hit until 5 years later in 1982. So it's actually a 70s song. I'm not sure whether the official video is from 1977 or 1982. Perhaps 1982 is more likely. This is a nice performance of the song in HD on the Dutch show TopPop in June 1982: czcams.com/video/txGhgfo6Iew/video.html

    • @RBS_
      @RBS_ Před 2 lety

....SPOT ON trivia, Andrew, but allow me, if you will, to fill out some additional info: ...It actually was recorded in 1976, but was to BE released in 1977, because Charlene was on Motown Records (a mostly black label) featuring a White artist, and they didn't know how to market her....She was supposed to be 'their' Olivia Newton John... (cont.)
..AND the Song was actually played as a 'joke', by a DJ in 1981 / 1982, because the tune is about a 'jet-setting' Woman...who's actually, the OTHER Woman, and missed out on a domesticated lifestyle... kinda like "Alexis Carrington" from "Dynasty" ....

Hi Empress!! A couple of great Interviews for 1990-91, you should definitely check out.(1) BBC Radio Interview/1990, (2) Regis Philbin 90/91( it’s a two parter I believe). (3)Arsenio Hall 90/91, (4) MTV-90/91, I believe this was called Breakfast With Madonna, Interview during the Blonde Ambition Tour. Just wanted to suggest a couple, this was a great time for awesome Interviews. :)

As always, Empress had some great insights - - and even noted that the song could also apply to men... And, in fact!, there is Indeed a Male version of the song, by The Temptations.
Musically, it's excellent, but they had to change some of the lyrics around - - and the 'message' just isn't quite as clear. It's describing a young guy running around, seeing the world, having a great time, with no real repercussions - - and I'm like, Sign me Up for that! I'll take some'a That!
Yeah. That version just don't really work as a message song.

Well... In my opinion, cheesy is bad music! Bad vocals, bad arrangement, bad lyrics, bad melody, bad harmony... Anyway, everything that is in 95% of what we currently hear and none of what we find in this song. But I repeat... This is my concept of a "cheesy" song.
