I'm so glad you had the chance to hear Bill Withers. He is a class act. This song came out in 1972, the year I came back to the states from Germany. My son was 10 years old then - he's now a grandfather several times over. Bill Withers died Mar 2020 at the age of 81. A true gentleman.
@@rubroken I was at McGuire AFB, then -the 438th Avionics Maintenance Squadron. My son, later on, was the Commander of the Civil Engineering Squadron, Scott AFB, Ill. He retired as a Major.
An absolute classic that will be around another 50years that it already has been around. Club Nouveau covered this in 86 with an upbeat dance version that's pretty good
Club Nouveau’s version is the one I grew up with; BW’s original is my parents 100%. The gap was bridged (for us , at least) with the Morgan Freeman movie which we saw as a family.
Bill grew up in Slab Fork , West Virginia . It was a Coal Mining town . Bill was inducted into the West Virginia Hall of Fame some years ago . He was one of my favorite artists check out " Grand Mas Hands " by him or Aint no Sunshine as well as I can write left handed RIP Brother
Life would be damn sad if we didn’t have that someone. I always had my Grandpa and when he passed I realized I had others that I could talk to and also be there for others. Truly a gift from the Lord.
Bill was a blue collar working man - steel worker I think - who hit it big in music. He was a perfectionist and demanded his own style. Ticked a lot of people off, but the proof is in the pudding, he's got around a half dozen hits and is an iconic figure in music. 'The Dork Side'. Heheheh. Excellent Smithers. Been there a long time.
He was an aircraft and auto assembler. He didn't initally quit his job when "Ain't No Sunshine" was running up the charts. That and "Use Me" are three great songs.
There have been many covers, but Bill's is the original , MOST SOULFUL. Nice slow tempo, takin' his time...I mean what the hell is the hurray? No vocal operatics, a message for all ages. He also did Granma's Hands, Ain't No Shine When She's Gone, Just the Two of Us
Bill had been working and managed to save some money enough so he could buy himself a electric piano. When he came home he plugged it in and simply went from one side to the other on the keyboard and realized it sounded good! That how this song came to be it's a true soul classic!!
Happy to see you reacting to Bill Withers, He does a great version of "Grandma's Hands", "Lovely Day", "Just the two of us" or "Use Me". All are wonderful.
I adore this man's music, his voice and the sentiment of his songs. He is an R&B legend. BTW, I play piano by ear and this is a great tune to pick out the chord progressions. Cheers to middle C!!!! HUGS AND LOVE TO BILL, and to friendship and brotherhood. God i miss the 70s..
There is a great documentary on Bill Withers out there. It is well worth watching. Very introspective guy. Left the biz to spend more time with his family. It's called *_Still Bill,_* from 2009. ❤
I am glad that you appreciate his music. I have been a Bill Withers fan since the day I first heard this song. I ran out and bought the 45 rpm record. Please check out another song of his "Ain't No Sunshine." I know you will like it as well. (BBC footage from 1974)
Nothing will EVER top the Bill Withers 1972 release, however, for a slightly updated and light-hearted version; Club Nouveau's 1986 version for the WIN!!
Hello my dear i truly want to thank you for this one. This was the first song i learned how to play on the keyboard. It an very inspiring song. Thanks.
This is a great song Angela!! You might want to react to, if you haven't already...... Use Me Grandma's Hands Ain't No Sunshine The Two of Us Lovely Day Who Is He? (And What Is He To You)
Yeah this was released in 1972. Good bad and sad memories. Cousin of mine passed away February 72 brain tumor couple years younger than me. The song came out, just brings it all up again. But watching you you get it and people still need it so many more people need it. Thank you
❤❤❤❤❤ The movie Lean On Me with Principal Joe Clark from year's ago, was dealing with Eastside Highschool in very dangerous Paterson, NJ. I live on Madison Avenue in Paterson, NJ and I'm about 4 block's away from Eastside Highschool, this great song led to great discipline and respect from very dangerous student's to respect bullying, drug dealing and respecting teacher's and get a Degree !!!!! The late great Principal Joe Clark had to chain the door's on this dangerous Paterson, NJ Highschool and teach respect to the very dangerous student's 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 rip the late great Bill Withers 😊😊😊😊😊
I used to have this cheap little keyboard I got from the secondhand store. It was a small type of instrument. But since I have this song in my music collection, one day I sat down and worked out the melody to it. It’s very simple but works.
I’m surprised Angela didn’t mention “Lean On Me”, the Morgan Freeman movie. Often the film introduced millennials to the Bill Withers song (if they hadn’t heard it already).
Bill Withers was my go-to for years whenever I struggled with a hard breakup or death of someone close. Songs like Lean on Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Grandma's Hands, etc. Withers was an auto worker when he cut his first record.
Bill grew up in Slab Fork, West Virginia about 20 mins from where I live here in Pineville, WV. He joined the Navy at 17 and moved to Calif and this song is based on his up bringing. The blacks lived on one side of the railroad tracks and whites on the other but would borrow items from each other. The song is based on the way people were in Calif and different than WV folks, WV folks helped each other so he came up with this song.

Oh my gosh I love this song. Bill could get it done. I like being the one people can lean on. Probably why I love this song and "Bridge over troubled water ".
You should listen to a Scottish band that was big in the early 70s called MIDDLE of the Road they had 5 hits in one year 1971 a couple of there songs SOLEY SOLEY / SACRAMENTO etc.
Now this artist has a lot of magical music, unlike the other one! My two favorites by Bill are Ain't No Sunshine and the collaboration he did with Grover Washington JR and Quincy Jones on the song Just The Two Of Us! The full version, not the radio edit! Groovy! One more thing! Your reaction was really on point! I totally agree with you on everything you said! The only drawback is that not everyone feels that way! Some people believe that if you can't do it all yourself, you're weak, you're a loser, you're whinny, a malcontent, and many other criticisms like that! Some people just aren't compassionate and don't empathize with you! What can you do! Later persons!
Another friend theme song you might consider is the 1969 song (studio version please)Friendship Train by Gladys Knight and The Pips. Song has cowbell, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, great vocals of Gladys Knight and also has a wonderful message for all time. It is a gem that reactors miss.

Yeah, there’ll be a lot of Bill Withers songs in your phone eventually. He was such a great man, who wrote & sang so many great songs.
Brother Bill taking us all to church. Check out his song "Grandma's Hands".
The LEGENDARY Iconic Mr Bill Withers

I consider that an homage. Nothing compares to the original, imho.
@@sealdrup Totally agree nothing tops the original
Both Withers and Club Nouveau hit #1 with their versions.
Club Nouveau’s version is the one I grew up with; BW’s original is my parents 100%. The gap was bridged (for us , at least) with the Morgan Freeman movie which we saw as a family.

We really need more music like this nowadays.
One of the most important singer/ songwriters of the modern era RIP Bill Withers

When a movie has the same title, you know the song is inspirational

Bill Withers is overlooked with some other mega-songs. "Ain't No Sunshine" "Just The Two of Us", "Lovely Day" "Grandma's Hands"
Bill Withers was one of the GREAT singer/song writers! So many great songs. One of my favorites is "Grandma's Hands" - I bet you'd like it.
One of the most beautiful, most loving songs ever written or recorded. Almost perfect!
Bill launches a great message of solidarity, brotherhood and hope for those, perhaps many, who feel alone. Excellent song. Thank you dear Angela.
We sang this at our Junior High School graduation. You should react to Donny Hathaway “Young, gifted & black.

First song I learned on bass and played live
A great song at the time. A lot of people could identify with the sentiment.

I always have time and playlist slots available for Mr. Withers. Brilliant musician.
There is no denying that the 60s and 70s are the greatest Era for music
With all due expect, that’s precisely how my peers and I feel about the 80’s and 90’s.
I would say 70s and 80s had the best soul. I really like 60s rock and blues and 90s and 2000s for Rnb

Indubitably 😊
How could you have never heard this song?
She said she heard “parts of it” but never in its entirety so it wasn’t like she was completely unfamiliar with “Lean On Me”.

You get it. What an awe inspiring message. Now listen to" He Ain't Heavy", Hollies version is best, and start crying..
There was a remake of this song in the mid 80s that was pretty good also, great shirt by the way.
I think you'd enjoy Bill's song 'Use Me' covered by Grace Jones. Grace with Sly and Robbie, you can't go wrong!
