- Take a trip to Val Di Fassa Trentino in Italy, one of the most beautiful places to ever host a bike race! Round three headed deep into the Dolomites to see racers take on five big stages that were steep, physical and technical in equal measure.
Join Ric McLaughlin and Josh Carlson as they look at how the race unfolded, who came out on top and what it means for the overall rankings in episode three of the Enduro World Series Show!

TLDR - Make more of the racing, MUCH more. Enduro can be made into a really exciting rewatch but it’s not there yet. Play to the strengths of both formats (Highlights and Full Show) more and it will add so much more value for everyone.
-
You have one of the most physically gruelling, exciting and dangerous sports in the world with super-human athletes but the current coverage isn’t doing it justice, for the athletes, audience or brands involved.
There’s been a lot of criticism about the new formats, but I actually think it’s really positive - the old ones were getting formulaic and repetitive. This new split format definitely works in theory, it just needs a bit of developing. Some ideas below, and in fairness it’s improving each episode so it’s proof that they are listening!
Both/General:
- Enduro is not a great spectator or live sport, but the rewatching can be really engaging if formatted properly.
- Focus more on the racing. Build the stakes and drama. If you don’t feel on the edge of your seat whilst watching the race unfolding the format is failing everyone.
- Show more than just the top 3.
- Josh is great, more Josh.
- Show more of what goes into making the race so hard and unique.
My main feedback here is that some new graphic display formats can absolutely transform both shows and make it so much more engaging to watch. We can some very strong hints from DH here.
COURSE DETAIL GRAPHICS
In the map preview, add stats for meters climbed, meters descended. Average grade, technicality, speed and terrain that separates itself from the other venues.
Show the map for a bit longer, illustrate the assisted and non-assisted parts graphically.
RACE GRAPHIC ANIMATION
I think this is key - develop a graphic that shows the race unfolding and builds the excitement of the battles. Something like the virtual straight in DH, but on a per-stage basis. You could take some cues from the Finish Spread graphics on Roots and Rain as well.
You can zoom in and out to show the micro and macro of the race here, it could work really well and add all-important context, and we’ll be much more excited to cut to the live footage.
Highlights:
- Go back to the longer 20 min length. Nail a way to make the racing drama really work (could be the graphic mentioned above) and it will really work.
- Don’t show the winner straight away. Build tension, build up to the winner
- Def better showing a quick catchup with the riders after/between stages.
Full Show:
Wait a bit longer, make it longer and better, most importantly add to the racing section and people will want to watch it. Just having the same highlights in means it will only appeal to people that are interested in everything OTHER than the racing. There is so much potential with the split format.
BUILD UP
- More on the build up to the race. For the first episode show some footage from the off-season, chat to the riders about their ambitions etc.
- Really set the scene for the venue - you travel to more amazing places in the world than DH, so much work goes into setting it up. Show this and really celebrate that. Show the surrounding town, speak to the EWS (Chris prob?) about why it was chosen, what the challenges were, how EWS adds to the local climate etc. This can be in brief and come back to it in more detail after the racing.
- More on the schedule - how long to recuperate, practice days, travel etc. Again maybe some more graphics for this?
- More bike setup/pits stuff in brief.
- Get bits of the course previews in. Nutrition, restocking, mechanical stops etc.
- It worked really well on this one having a bit more on the characters coming into it, but I’d go further - add headshots, sponsors, age, body stats, racing stats, riding style. Building the characters builds the stakes for the race itself.
- Build drama. Have the surrounding stuff in before, but only that builds stakes for the race. Everything else afterwards.
- Explain the format - use graphics to show how the stage points work, why the Pro and Queen stages are so important. This can be quick but essential to understand what you’re watching.
RACING
- Do NOT just whack the same highlights in, you can really use the longer format and extra time to build this into something much more fleshed out.
- Collect GoPros from the riders, find out the stories that defined the race.
- Show more than just the top 3.
- Really set the scene of each stage - the Course graphic again, zoom in and cut to the course preview footage to show tricky bits. Have Carlson briefly show key sections, but nothing too long, it’s not DH where the specifics of one line choice really define the race, it’s really all about the whole.
- More coverage of the Pro Stage.
- Show people dying on the liaisons, show how HARD it is!
- Graphics showing the race developing punctuated with bits of live action from the stages - either POV or trackside.
ROUNDUP
- Good got rid of stats with Neil - was selling the brand short.
- Go into more detail on things that defined the race.
- More roundup interviews with people.

Anyway, some (!) thoughts to take or leave…
"What are you doing dear?"
"Oh just writing a CZcams comment."
"How long will you be?"
"About 7 hours."
Y’all should hire this guy! ^^^^
Great input! +1 from me!
You forgot how about adding those uphill sections in every stages? Good input. They should hire you.

“Come on now it’s been 3 days”
“Yes but Pinkbike Racing Episode 2 has just been released”
😂
love it, but we need some live streaming like a downhill race event. at least like Crankworks or innsbruck
Would you really sit there all day to watch each stage?
@@tomwilcox174 of course, why not. it will be evening/night in here, I will not go anywhere.
Great riding, Richie Rude!!!
Challenging to change the format mid seasons but you have some input already. I want to see more than just top 3. Who is struggling and under performing and what’s their view. Who is doing a great job in the middle and so on.
Maybe hook up with Red Bull they now how to work content.
Man I'm getting so mixed up. Is this the same as the gmbn ews show? I do like this size of video though and the content is pretty much what I want to know/see. I love the interviews with riders that's top notch. Lots Of work to make it but it has lots of stuff to keep my peanut brain entertained. 🤘
Same as the gmbn ews show? U mean is this the same enduro world series? If so yesir! :)
Still want longer highlights tho
How long do you want them to be?!
@@uci_mtbworldseries like the ones of last year, 25min of highlight covering every stage
@@uci_mtbworldseries probably the 15min of filler didnt help with the amount of highlights
@@uci_mtbworldseries Just stop focusing on the TOP 3 riders and Moir. There are nice touches, someone will drive extremely well, you don't talk about it at all. These are the only such materials about EWS and still the same
@@uci_mtbworldseries 20 - 25 like last year and the same highlights format as last year. The highlights should be the main part of the coverage and the EWS show' should be "only" a nice addition. At the moment it feels like it's the other way around
You guys should hit up Cathro and Rob Warner to consult on how to rework the EWS coverage to make it exciting. I get it, you guys are trying to get better and are experimenting but the excitement is just not there yet. Keep on experimenting though, it'll get there. Just don't listen to anything GMBN has to say, that's the opposite direction that you want to go.
Nice🔥
6:51 No one's more relatable than Noga lol
These just keep getting better, I like the short racing only vid and then watch this one to get the whole EWS vibe.
On ya Eddie
Give Eddie some respect you hardly mentioned him, same for Matt Fairbrother!
Ciao Ric!
Still great, but I feel theres some coverage missing - example: the flat tyre and accident etc. it would have been good if more coverage was there. I agree with the live streaming as well and upload that here after.
I kind of feel you’d only watch this if you were very keen. And if you’re very keen (like me) you’d have likely seen 90% of this content previously. I don’t think this is a good format, though its great you’re looking at different angles. This seems a needless amalgamation.
This is the program made for TV
fuck yeah booker! get the dog!!
First!
Last!
Isn't there some guy named Sam Hill riding bikes? Herd he is quite popular too. Funny you never mention him?
To be fair they barely mention anyone outside the top 3, and with Sam being 45th in the overall there are over 40 people finishing ahead of him who aren't getting any coverage either.
@@esczine yeah I get that. Those other 40 or so people are not Sam Hill. He is.
Trendsetters… interesting
WTF are you reusing the same commentary? what about all other riders outside top3? Best show so far though, I'd still watch it if it is people and things around the racing but from all I've seen so far, nothing of for example Cole Lucas who's having a breakthrough year, Oliwer Kangas was 12 on the pro stage! and so on and so on, we shouldn't need to follow 40 or more riders social media to get input of racing outside of top 3! READ the COMMENTS and LEARN!!!
Compared to the round previews and race highlights from 2015-16-17 and18 before the discovery contract this content is rubbish. I get more enjoyment going back and watching your videos from 15-16-17 and 18 at least those videos give a good overview of the entire weekend. Just lucky Jack puts out a full race video. Don't think I'll bother with your content anymore and I am not looking forward to next year when discovery take over downhill and crosscountry if this rubbish is anything to go by.
To me probably the Enduro top dogs need some more hard XC riding practice
Coverage is bunk
This show just comes out too late. No need to pretend the race hasn't happened. The results are out. Just a recap would do. I can't sit through all this. Half of this show should be before the race. No wonder it's so hard to watch Enduro. Media doesn't try to make it any better.
Yeah I was so confused with the commenting, like wtf have they too not seen any footage? We are basically getting fed "reaction videos" of commentators who watch the recap with us. Who tf told them this was what people want? How is it so hard to just set up cameras in the woods and capture the top 10 riders and play the footage?
The big bold text plastered across the middle of the screen with the riders names in the first few minutes looks really cheap and tacky - keep it smaller with their team name underneath etc towards a corner - no one wants the riding footage to look like a meme etc!
Is it just me, or is this years coverage really boring?? It just feels like there is waaaay too much talking and not enough racing. Stick with the 2019 and 2021 highlights video format and your coverage will be much more enjoyable to watch.
