- The greatest Roman gladiator?
Perhaps the greatest Gladiator of all time was in fact Syrian.
Flamma or (Flame) as he was called in the arena lived during the time of emperor Hadrian.
Forced to fight in the arena he defeated a previously unbeaten gladiator in his first fight.
Flamma was a secutor class of gladiator meaning that he used a shield and a short sword known as a gladius while wearing armour on only one side of his body. His common opponents were retiarii (lightly armed gladiators).
His origins are a bit of mystery but it is possible he began life as a soldier. One thing is for certain though. He was born to fight!.
It was not uncommon for an accomplished gladiator to attain their freedom and be awarded a rudis (a wooden sword).
However Flamma refused this honour 4 times, choosing to keep fighting. By the time of his death he had fought more than any other gladiator.
He was buried by fellow gladiators in Sicily and his gravestone reads.
“Flamma lived 30 years, fought 34 times, won 21 times, fought to a draw 9 times, and won reprieve 4 times.
You know you were a badass when your gravestone reads fight statistics 💀
Lol so badass
Man was such a beast they had to add his KD

@@slyC4 his kd probably wouldn't be very high, if i were you i'd check his assists
@@gordoplier9168 If Hitler leads in assists does Stalin lead in kills?
Gladiators commonly fought to the draw of blood or a submission. It was rare that gladiators were demanded to fight to a kill, it was more likely a wound would get infected and take a life later on. If it makes anyone feel any better, they weren’t accustomed to watching murders every Thursday.
Yup, those were on fridays
@@MatthewTheUntitled exactly. Love your old zed outplays btw.
I hear people who had a special love for killing their opponents were targeted by other gladiators. most wanted to preserve their life.
That. And they were asset’s, owned and well taken care of… like todays prize fighters. So death, did not come to them as common as we were taught. They had other subjects for that, like prisoners and so on…

he was SO dope that they were FORCED to add his K/D to his gravestone
how did he die? who did he lose to if he died in arena?
I wondered that very same thing but im afraid I don't know. From what I could find in my research, It's possible he wanted to continue fighting until killed as prior to being captured it was likely his family would have been slaughtered and with nothing else to live for it would have changed him psychologically. Then again he fought over a 13 year period which would suggest he was comfortable being a gladiator so your guess is as good as mine and the experts. 🤷
@@abriefhistory5666 alright thanks
It wasnt actually that common for a gladiator fight to end in death. Many died for sure but it wasnt the rule
It said he lost a few times so apparently it wasn't always a fight to the death I guess I can't believe everything I hear in movies LOL right?

@@Siosifa but what if the opponent had the same helmet?
Just so people aren't confused here, gladiators didn't kill each other. In fact they were generally taken pretty good care of because let's be honest even in Rome slaves were expensive and not something you could just dispatch of every Friday night. They were more akin to like, WWE wrestlers today or actors. They usually only really nicked one another and the first one to draw blood normally one. Fights to the death were rare instances.
Edit: forgot to add that they also did "autograph signings" and "promotions". They would promote local businesses and such. They were basically just paid actors for life lol
There would also be wooden figures made of popular gladiators to be sold as toys.
Oh you were there i see
@@memyself6360 Weren't you?
Ye well they were far from "actors" they were well trained and experienced, most were former soldiers who had been captured and sold into slavery ufc or boxing would be a better comparison than wwe though it's impossible to find an actual true comparison because ufc fighter and boxers arnt real warriors
WWE is too staged and just fluff. Predetermined outcome. Not true gladiatorial style of fighting.
More like UFC/MMA fighters or boxers/Olympic wrestlers today with the Rockstar hype.

Nice short ty
I’ve always wished there was some way we could watch a Roman gladiatorial game. They were such spectacles. They would even fill the arena with water sometimes and have literally ship battles. It was honestly probably the craziest shit ever. Movies like gladiator did not do gladiator fights justice. Closest movie/show I’ve seen get the games right was that tv show Spartacus
Right!? I wish i had a time machine so bad just to watch historical events, id settle for a time tv haha. The naval battles intrigue me the most, the coliseum had some spectacular naval battles but Rome had a special courtyard for the emperor with some insanely large pools and canals connecting them where they would recreat large naval battles with i believe over 100 ships at a time. Imagine the batshit craziness of watching an actual ass war in person with zero danger. Effing insane!
Wow another piece of history add to my list. Impressive.
If his history was better recorded he would have been known as the greatest fighter to ever live and would have been studied by fighters to this day…

What a chad.
Odds are good that he didn't even kill half of those fighters, gladiators rarely killed their opponents.
Gladiators usually only fought to first blood unless agreed otherwise.
How hard you have to be to have your K/D on your headstone
I like how he never truly lost, but “won reprieve”.
Rigged. Still the fact he refused freedom 4 times is the thing I respect. He loved being a gladiator. The fact he was only half armored but those he fought were most likely fully armored
@@bradmoberly6164 he literally says they were lightly armored opponents.
What does reprieve even mean
@@matcuscorpez6452 the closest word i can think of is mercy
No in this context his reprieve was winning so many to where he was offered freedom 4 times and rejected it 4 times, basically he was offered a mercy to a life outside of violence and rejected 4 times he didn't lose 4 times
No wonder he was so successful, secutor class was the closest to the legionary, the most effective close quarters fighter in classical history.
Retiari was a perfect counter for the secutor class because of the shape of its helmet it was easy to throw a net (retiari equipment) to his helmet and latch on it because it had edges on its helmet and pull it , since the helmet was just and attached it unbalanced the adversary and then it was killing time
The greatest gladiator of all times must be *Russell Crowe.* He could ride from northern Germania to Spain in less than 24 hours (the bloody wound on his cheek was still wet).
Thanks specially for these numbers!
Proud to be Syrian

I’m pretty sure this guy was Hadrian’s favorite as well! When SHTF in Rome and Hadrian was in trouble he reached out to Flame and he pulled a “new phone who dis” 😂 Hadrian had given him many properties and assets too so that must have hurt.
Near my parent’s village is the Roman arena where Spartacus, Crixus and many other gladiators who started the revolt against Rome used to train and fight. There’s a small but very interesting museum with original gladiators’ helmets etc. proud of being from that area.
Threw him to the wolves and he ended up leading the pack.
Marcus Aurelius killed him. It's in the movie!
Oh well if it's in a movie, it must be true 🙄

I'm 62 and I've studied Roman history as a hobby for over 40 years. In fact I'm reading a book on Rome right now. The movie you refer to is one of the least factual movies on Rome I've seen. Hadrian died in 138 ad Marcus Aurelius started his reign in 161 ad

The funny thing is all things considered that 34 fights doesn't even seem like that much compared to what people probably think. This means he probably only fought a couple times a year

If he won his freedom four times and turned it down four times. he was not forced to do that he wanted to, he liked the arena
$1000 says Tyson would have knocked him out in less than a minute
One thing for sure, he couldnt bite his ear off with that helmet.
The stakes in Tysons fights are nothing near the stakes of flammas fight. Throw Tyson in a gladiator battle and he will shit himself uts easy to fight when you aren't willing to die too do u not fear the man who doesn't fear his own death? Great content, your channel will be great like Flamma one day
Reprieve means he was given his freedom from being a gladiator not that his life was spared. He started as a POW, probably slightly higher than a slave. Then because of how much money he was bringing in and how popular he got, he was given a reprieve from being a gladiator. Like a retirement, probably not citizenship but more like allowed to stop fighting and probably train others.
Then he was given this option FOUR times and refused. Maybe because he figured it was better to die fighting than grow old as a trainer? Either way it wasn't a release from a death match.
The 9 draws might have been loses though. It could have been that those were times he was losing a fight and the crowd made it end, over watching their favorite die.

Why isn't there a proper movie or series for this hero
his story was hidden by king Hadrian who flamed to inflict heavy loss on the roman empire at the battle of khohba he annihilated a roman and auxiliary legion before the king sent half of the empire to capture him the sound slave and gladiator story started a bit like maximus
I wonder if they would entertain giving the freedom he earned to another gladiator on his behalf
I seriously have no idea how there is no movie about Flamma yet
Because his name means لهب
And probably was لهب
@@uniuni8855 how is that connected to there not being a movie about him?? Also, he was Syrian, so his language would have been Aramaic, not Arabic. Lahab (لهب) in Aramaic would be “Gawzala” (ܓܘܙܠܐ) and “Dalqa” (ܕܠܩܐ).
And this is where movie directors ie Steven Spielberg make an amazing based on true story movie 🎥

The first ultimate fighter champion and world record holder. He set the bar for others who followed.
That's a legend
Id love to hear this mans reason for not wanting freedom after successfully winning freedom several times. Ruthless
I mentioned this in a comment once before but I am happy to offer several theories. Perhaps after such a horrific upbringing and having no family left he was simply wanting to die on his own terms. It is also possible that this was all he knew and and like a prisoner that has been incarcerated for so long that the thought of freedom is terrifying. He could have also loved battle and seeing as he was the best at it (in recorded history) he felt there was nothing else he would rather do. On average it seems he fought twice a year and in-between fights he would have lived a lavish lifestyle and one which he would not want to give up. So take your pick. PTSD, Fear of the unknown, Fame or simply for financial stability. Either way he left us with quite a story. Thanks for the comment

But now you're finally awake
That famous thumbs down gladiator painting is in Phoenix Arizona. I used to live next to the Musuem and would go and look at it. It's really impressive and big.
The fact he won reprieve 4 times was pretty impressive alone (reprieve meaning:cancel or postpone the punishment of (someone, especially someone condemned to death).
Maybe he hated the fact people had power over him and the only way he could do the same was in the colluseum. Today we see the same with fast food workers no man likes having a boss and it slowly eats at your masculinity until it comes out like this where you need an outlet to exert power and be rewarded by society because power is the main language
