There were dozens of incredible product introductions by Steve Jobs while he was CEO of Apple. Like pulling the iPod nano out of his jeans coin pocket, or sliding the MacBook Air out of a manila envelope. But perhaps the most iconic product keynote he ever delivered was for the original iPhone back in 2007. Not only did the presentation feature an incredible narrative and setup for the iPhone’s reveal, but it was a logistical nightmare to pull off. And some people who worked on the introduction didn’t think it could be done successfully at all. So in this video we’re going to take a peak behind the curtain and investigate the drama behind the original iPhones launch, and find out why it’s considered by many to be one of the greatest product introductions of all time.

I was trying to decide between Blackberry and iPhone in 2007. I was a recent Apple convert, so I decided to go with my gut even though I knew Blackberry was the KING at the time. I’ll never forget those first few weeks with the original iPhone. I was blown away that this was possible on a mobile device. Oh yeah, I finished college right when the App Store came out, and I’ve been an iOS software engineer ever since!

I remembered streaming the keynote on iTunes when I was a kid, now a decade has past and I still get chills listening to the original iPhone's keynote. I will never forget the line "these are not three separate devices, this is one device" and the crowd and perhaps the world saw the future on steve's hand.

The amazing part is that a CEO of one of the biggest companies on the planet can be so small minded and unimaginative and even do it in public. He should’ve been fired before finishing the interview.

@@nixl3518 the funny thing is even if it wasn’t right away he ended up no longer being the CEO anyways Microsoft doesn’t seem to get when they make mistakes right away but clearly they realized he was a mistake of their CEO at some point. Which is why he is no longer there CEO.
@@nkt1 The bravado of an "unconcerned" CEO is something the market wants to see, but it's foolishness on everyone's part. A reasonable response would've been: "This launch changes the landscape of today's mobile devices, and we are excited to meet the challenge of the gauntlet thrown by Apple." At least that, while showing confidence, doesn't read as an arrogant and visionless nincompoop 5, 10, 15 years later.
I remember I was in downtown Palo Alto, California when the iPhone launched in 2007. There were people out the the door to get one at the Apple Store.

I've watched the iPhone 2007 Keynote so many times I've lost count. It's just a very entertaining watch. Jobs might have been rude in private but the man sure knew how to capture an audience.

@@maganhassan2627 It’s well documented that Jobs could be an incredibly callous, insensitive and manipulative person. He knew how to push people to their absolute limits, didn’t care about their physical or mental well-being as long as the job was getting done and then often took credit for ideas and work that wasn’t really his. Granted, this attitude served him well and played a big role in his success but I don’t think that makes it good conduct.

I am not an Apple fan, but the 2007 keynote was truly brilliant.
Watching it even today I can feel the excitement, despite the technology being nothing special anymore.

It’s rare that we can point to a single moment in time that would literally change the world forever. I remember watching the keynote on iTunes in my college dorm room and immediately knowing I’d witnessed history.

Only if one is clued in to the history but specially non iPhone users as well as younger users are not aware that the phones they own exist exactly because Steve Jobs/Apple developed the iPhone touchscreen. Until then, all phones had regular insensitive screens and real keys, the ten numerical or the tiny qwerty keyboard. One year later every serious phone manufacturer that still exists today, incorporated the Apple touchscreen. RIM and MS died resisting the invention.

Anyone remembering touch screens at the time--- you'll know how amazing it was to use the iphone screen... it worked so amazingly well... the interface between human and machine... that's what Jobs was best at.
d0qtrx that is exactly why it was successful not because of how Jobs introduced it or a successful live demo. It’s success was because when people got the phone in their hands the screen was responsive and you never had to calibrate the touch interface.
Palm/handspring had the corner on smartphones but failed to innovate for years and everyone was tired of calibrating their screens and apps constantly crashing.
The iPhone just worked. I still think the music app should have a virtual click wheel and would be easier to use like the iPod was.
All the others were using resistive touch, which would only allows for single point touch and it was much easier to use a stylist than a finger. Apple was the first to employ capacitive touch. This also made it easier to recognize gestures and multiple point such as pinch zoom.
Man I’ve seen this keynote like 100 times I have in every classic iPhone of my collection, and now it just became more special and heroic than ever. Thanks for this in-depth explanations, although I already heard a lot of this things from the interview that’s in the internet about the guys that helped Jobs throughout the making of the iPhone.
The biggest impact came from its smoothness. When I saw it first I was like cool but it'll be laggy AF just like everything else. Everyone had great ads but in practice would be horrible to use.
And then I used one. The smoothness of the UI was mindblowing. Even though today's Apple is a farce they (thanks to Steve) take all the credit for how smooth everything is today from a user perspective.

Same. I watched the demo videos on Apple's sales page after this, and it was impressive. But, I had serious doubts. It was just such a huge departure from contemporary devices that I was highly skeptical how well it would actually work. And then I used one. And then I got one. :-)
True, even today, you'll find iOS 15 is a lot smoother than Android 12, even though the hardware required for android 12 is stronger than hardware for iOS 15.
@@Orincaby That's because Android is made to run on a huge swaths of hardware for companies that will never talk with developers of the OS. The OS can't be optimized for any specific hardware because there's too many things to choose to optimize it for. However Apple controls both the hardware and the software, so they know exactly what hardware will use what OS. This gives them the opportunity to make it as smooth and optimized as possible. This is also the idea of having complete control end-to-end that Jobs has always been known for, and is a reasoning for some people's hate for him. It also just so happens to be a reason to love him.

I remember being the only kid in high school with an iPhone (or any smartphone for that matter) for the entire year. Think about that, at 16, I had the only smartphone I had ever seen. It was magical and then some.
Same here. Teachers made us put out phones on our desk. They had no idea I could use the web during tests and quizzes. Hilarious to think about now.
That Balmer interview literally explains why Windows has zero presence in the mobile market today. I also remember the piece where Jobs tried to convince then HP CEO Meg Whitman (that's right, the same one that want to be POTUS) to get into mobile and she laughed at him and said "Mobile won't take off".
She said that just like balmer because they can’t compete with their products with mobile devices. They really saying they won’t take off with mobile with everyone already moving with it. Butthurt ceo’s were just complaining
I figured when watching the original keynote that it would have been difficult to pull all of that off in 2007, but this video really encompassed the true hurdles. Incredible. Great video too!

I believe the keynote was the greatest in tech history. I’ve watched the keynote in full many times and it still blows me away. Not many people realise that even before Jobs said ‘This is a day I’ve waited two and a half years for’ that started the introduction of the first iPhone the keynote had been going the best part of an hour covering other apple products. To complicate the keynote with an hours worth of other business before then pulling off the lengthy iPhone presentation is the stuff of legends. What Apple accomplished back then shock the tech world right down to its single core. Truly a dent has been made in the universe.

I saw the keynote and thought it looked cool. Was due for a new phone and went in on launch day where there was no lines or much activity for that matter. Figured if they had the phone I would go ahead and get it. They did and I couldn't be more pleased with how the device functioned. I still remember being amazed that the internet actually downloaded while I was in motion. Wasn't expecting that. I remember the price dropping by like $200 bucks pretty shortly after launch. I got a gift card for $100 because of it and bought some very nice earphones with it. Still have them and they work great 12 years later. 12 years already. Thanks Steve, great device to have as a legacy. We would still be using Nokias if it wasn't for Steve. It takes a disruptor like him to get a stagnant industry off it's ass.

The RIM commentary isn't entirely correct. The Globe and Mail had an article that showed that RIM tried to put on a brave front but (Mike Lazaridis) were secretly freaked out by everything inside the phone.

Seems like there's not enough information to answer. If the cubes can fold over and overlap, then you are correct. If something else is meant, then idk the answer. I'm pretty sure there's only one answer though since Brilliant has very difficult, but not trick-type, questions.
Assuming all squares can overlap other squares as many times as we need them to, then only figs. A and C would be correct. But only one can be correct. And remember that a cube is 3D (I made the mistake of thinking "square" at first).
Figures B and D both leave one side open, so not a full cube.
But both A and C make perfect cubes "folded up" (as if they were paper) without any overlapping pieces.
I hate how the link NEVER takes you to the answer, so we're stuck forever not knowing.
A and C both seemed to work for me too. I thought of them a few times, and unless I’m missing something, they both work.
I can confirm A is a solution because I built a model with cardboard and folded it. I’ll let someone else do the experiment for choice C.

I remember buying my son a blackberry around 2008, it was out of date within a year. my first apple product was a mac pro in 2014 and it's still going, I would have had about three microsoft computers within that time frame if I had stayed with Microsoft. Now I am totally in Apple eco system, iphone,ipad,watch, tv, music. they just work well.
They just work, and they really do last forever! I still use an iPod (4th gen) for my music, and my 2008 MacBook can still operate like a champ. It also has the 2017 version of iTunes, so I can still easily keep my old devices humming along.

I remember when it became available. I know somebody who bought it on the first day and me and my friend visited that person and asked him to try. I was absolutely amazed. Back then I used a Samsung Blackjack and a P800 SonyEricsson. The iPhone literally blown me away and I wanted to throw those two phones away. I could not wait to get mine.
Most of the tech forums were full of negative comments. I remember one of the main issue was the size of the screen. They said it is huge. Other said, there is no MMS, or infra port, does not have keyboard and radio..
Jobs was right 13 years ago, Apple reinvented the phone..

But to be fair the original iPhone had no 3G, could not send SMS pictures, and required a Mac or PC to set up in the first place. it just didn't seem like a good idea and I was happy with my flip phone that was basically free and fit in my pocket much easier. Like everyone else I finally bought the iPhone 3S a few years later. Then I bought a Mac. Then I got CarPlay, Airport Expresses, and... well.. that's another story.

I got my first iPhone 3G in 2009 bought as a college graduation gift from my sister. Oh it was one the best feeling in the world. Still the one of the best feelings every time I get a new iPhone. I think it’s the one in my profile photo.
My first iPhone was the 3GS in black. It was just sooo cute and beautiful! I loved it! I was one of the first in my university course to own an iPhone and I was so proud!
And I watched that super viral „I got my Mac on with iPhone 3GS“ song by Julian Smith like a gazillion times! It was just so much fun!!! 😄

To be fair those comments from 2007 are somewhat valid. People forget that Apple launched the iPhone without push email, enterprise support, lack of calendar syncing and apps. These features only reached the iPhone when the iPhone 3G was launched.
In addition, the keynote highlighted a lot of media related features.
Anthony C also no applications.
To be specific, no over-the-air calendar syncronization (unless you paid the Dot Mac subscription?) but it did sync with your computers calendar when plugged in to iTunes. Which is one of the main reasons I wanted one.
The people who worked behind this specific keynote are literal gods,, at that day I wouldn't even know if I could eat cuz I would probably be nervous as hell,, Apple really thought of something awesome, worked on it, built it, presented it to the world, and sold it. I still watch that 2007 keynote every now and then and think that it was a needed change, and it did, it changed the game.

It’s an incredibly brave thing to be innovative. There’s always resistance and exaggerated scrutiny. But I love Steve Job’s most brilliant quote: “People don’t know what they want until I show it to them”. And he was right!

When the iPhone was first announced, I was doubtful about it, mostly because it was so expensive. But eventually, after seeing my RAZR and my RAZR2 crap out after a few months, I had to get an iPhone. Plus getting a Mac made getting an iPhone the natural next step.
When Federighi demoed FaceID for the iPhone X, it "failed" (actually the software didn't but it didn't work as planned) and he had to switch iPhones. Apple lost huge shares at that moment (since the X was their One More Thing)
So you can imagine the balls it took Steve Jobs to follow a Golden Path and be a magician on stage with multiple iPhones tricking the whole world in the launch of the most iconic product. Penn (a magician from the show Penn &Teller )called him a magician for his incredible sleight of hand

Funny how it works. All those people who complained about the touch screen of the iPhone are now using iPhones. They were SOOOO wrong. As soon as I saw the iPhone, I was 17 and I was convinced that this will change EVERYTHING.
I find it interesting that based on the graph at 7:28 that the sales of RIMs Blackberry seemed to skyrocket AFTER the iPhone was released and didn’t start to decline until the year that the iPhone 4S was released in 2011. I think that year was also when iPhone was finally available in CDMA versions which allowed it to be used on networks like Verizon and Sprint (in the USA) and opened up to millions more people around the world because of that. General interest in smartphones and businesses investing heavily into the mobile markets probably drove sales as well. With every passing year Apple was making enterprise support better and better while companies like RIM stagnated. I’m open to debating these ideas as well.
iPhone was truly a game changer for everything. The fluid responsiveness of the OS, powerful GPS capabilities, iTunes integration, the pre-ad era of CZcams, seamless integration with your Mac/PC, and so much more. It had its shortcomings but based on the absolute nightmare that was its development it was nothing short of a miracle they got working what they did. I wish Apple would start pushing the envelope again with the iPhone and start giving Android a run for its money. In my opinion, Apple has become the Nintendo of the phone industry: lateral thinking with withered technology. Using older technology that is outdated but cheap, well understood, and heavily optimized (sure isn’t sold cheap either). For what it did in the past it was revolutionary but Apple needs to refocus their strategies with the mobile market. They made a big gamble with the M1/M1x chips and it is looking like it is going to pay off.

7:25 Although I do agree with the facts that I can verify in this video, the creator did get one thing wrong. Those blackberry didn't have "small low quality display"s. In fact, the blackberry in question had a screen which was 360x480 pixels. Compare that to the original iphone which had a 320x480 display and the blackberry actually has a better PPI and sharper screen.

Knew a guy at Nokia in 2007. He had the same reaction as RIM and Microsoft. "Bah, our phones can do the same." I told him that they better take it seriously, since it's much smoother and easier, and does a lot of things better than a huge old PC. Unfortunately they didn't.
